My gt.gt.gt.grandfather Joseph AKEROYD was listed as a Waterman at his son Rhodes AKEROYD marriage to Jane ROBINSON in 1840 Pontefract Yks. Rhodes was christened in Walton, Sandal Magna 1810, and also his son Wright (also a waterman on 1881 census) bp 1843, and Rhodes' daughter Sarah Elizabeth AKEROYD bp 1845. John ROBINSON -the father of Rhodes' wife Jane ROBINSON, was also listed as a waterman, both on the marr. cert and on 1851 census for Walton. I have found a death for Rhodes 1854 Knottingley, which I believe is his. I wonder therefore, if either of the above names have cropped up in anyones research with canal data. Since Sandal Magna is close to Wakefield I am presuming (perhaps incorrectly) that they were on the Aire and Calder canals??
