In and around 1890 - would a young boy who had run away from home be taken on the canal boats to work.? My grandfather Henry ran away when he was around 8 - and he was a canal boatman through adult life - so I wonder how hard it would have been in those days for him to be taken on as help - in other words - would it have been legal.?
