Is anyone on this list researching the 1800s boatmen working the Erie, Morris, Delaware & Hudson and other US canals. Best wishes, Dennis Reiley reiley@usol.com
Just in case this didn't go due to Rootsweb problems I am sending again. I have posted before my interest in the Ashcroft family, bargees that worked on Lancaster canal for generations. I am also interested in boat families that the Ashcrofts married into. HAMPTON GOODIER (or GOODAIR) NORMAN RICHARDSON PIMLEY Joseph Hampton married Ann Ashcroft and on 1881 census were on Winmarleigh Smithy Bridge Canal Boat. Winmarleigh, Lancaster Leonard Goodair and his wife Fleetwood ? and daughters Mary and Ellen were on the canal boat 'Elm' on 1881 census. Their daughter Alice married Daniel Ashcroft in 1899 Elijah Norman married Elizabeth Ashcroft and on census day 1881 was mate of boat 'Kenneth' at Lound Wharf, Kendal, Westmorland, and Elizabeth's father was captain. Alice Ashcroft married John Richardson in 1884. Samuel Pimley married Margaret Ashcroft and on 1881 census were on a canal boat at Claughton, near Garstang with their family. Any details of these families would be much appreciated as I am writing a short history of the Ashcrofts and other families on the Lancaster canal. Also has anyone any details of a bargee family called Baines brothers. They are not mine but a contact of mine thinks his grandmother Ann Needham(Calland?) sold her boat business of seven barges to a family called Baines who also had seven bargees but can find no details of them other than a photograph of their boat 'May' c 1900 in the book Lancashire Waterways. In anticipation Janet Rigby

>From newspaper cuttings and family history research I have gathered a lot of information about my husband's ancestors the Ashcrofts who were a large bargee family working the Lancaster Canal. When trade ceased the Ashcrofts ran pleasure cruises in the summer until 1974 when the canal basin was filled in at Preston for construction of the University. I have written a short family history of the Ashcrofts from information I have got from the census and IGI,. bargee families that they have married into etc. It includes press cuttings and old photographs that some kind person provided for me to download. It occurred to me that I could include in the book other families that worked on the same canal particularly those based in Preston, having seen a wonderful book about Burscough boating families at the family history fair in Preston. If anyone could provide me with any information on their ancestors who worked on the Lancaster canal and who would like me to include them in my book, please contact me. My husband's mother who is 87 remembers the pleasure trips and said she had a lot of cousins that she lost touch with. I would particularly like to contact the descendants of the last bargees, Dan and Joe Ashcroft born in 1908 and 1900. With the inclusion of other families in my book, it could provide a lasting memento of a once thriving occupation, particularly at a time when the Lancaster Canal is being linked to the Leeds Liverpool. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Janet Rigby 3A Wham Lane New Longton Preston PR4 4XB 01772 612710

Hi Folks, I see from looking at the file again , that I sent yesterday, I have made two errors---- old age or what ? George FINIKIN 's birthplace which I gave as Hanley (without the H) wasn't that at all--it has only ...psford against it, and I don't know where it is ! Secondly the Samuel CHANDLER I gave should not have (blank) in his birthplace,it should be Aylesbury,Bucks. Sorry, I usually check them before I send, but last night I didn't--though you will probably always find some typos in the script !! Regards Thelma.
