In a message dated 02/01/02 12:02:14 GMT Standard Time, CANAL-PEOPLE-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: > hugh.p@virgin.net I am doing a census of 1881 boatmen on the canals, shall hopefully be putting the first list for this year on the site later today. If you have any knowledge of people by the name of GOVER or MURFIN using the Cromford Canal at any time I should be most interested to receive it . I have done the Cromford area already and you will find any names is the archives of the site. If you haven't got the 1881 census, I can look through my database and send them to you, but I understand that you are not interested in actual boatmen. I have a note of a J.GLOVER Boat no 1258. Permit Nos 480 & 634.Year 1841 also a T.GLOVER (Gauge No 520 Year 1812, status M. also J.MURFIN Gauge Nos. 365,520 and 1760 , who passed through the Cromford Canal in 1807/1812 & 1814 respectively. I am quite desperate to know the Christian names of these people and if you can help I shall be most grateful Happy New Year, Thelma
***Happy New Year*** Here is the first general admin email of the year! This is being cross-posted, so apologies if you receive several copies of this! We have just started to send out a regular, monthly Admin posting as there seems to be a sudden splurge of subscribers to ALL the lists that are run between us (Carol & Julie), with many new to the internet, so, here are some basic suggestions for the newer members & reminders for the regulars **** Remember we're all living is different parts of the world and what is obvious to you not obvious to other list members. Please be patient and polite to fellow list members. Treat others as you wish to be treated. **** It is useful to indicate the State, County, Country of your research Eg: Alberta Canada, Wagga Wagga NSW Australia, Exeter Devon. If possible can the two letter abbreviations used in the USA be replaced with the full names. **** The more information you include in your question the more likely you are to get an answer and The more specific your question, the most likely you are to get answer. ****All messages posted to mailing lists are the property of their writers. Please obtain permission from all parties before forwarding or publishing any message from this list. **** "I've looked everywhere", it does helps to mention where "everywhere" is so others can point you to new places to look rather than telling you to do what you've already done. ***** Consider using the Free Family Tree and We'll Meet Again Service, provided FREE by Carol of Tree Tops http://freespace.virgin.net/tree.tops By submitting a message to the various services Carol provides, you might find that missing link. Check out the web page for further details. Remember, when you have an elusive ancestor, anything is worth a try. **** I'd like to encourage people to send replies to the LIST rather than direct to the person The advantages of sending replies to the list: there's probably others that are interested in the answer, it might get a discussion and it lets others know if the question has been answered. **** Please remember the correct procedure for unsubscribing and subscribing. Send a blank email with the word subscribe or unsubscribe in the body of the message. The address to send to is the address with the word request in it. EG treetops-news-L-request@rootsweb.com etc Please post from the address that you are subscribed under, otherwise the Rootsweb robot thinks it is spam & the posting bounces to us for forwarding. ***If you respond to an forwarded email please, please make sure that you reply to the correct address, and do not click reply to sender, otherwise Carol or I are swamped with the replies! **** Use suitable subject headings, especially if you receive the digest version of postings. Not everyone reads everything and often time dictates we skim read the subjects lines looking for something interesting or relevant. An email that says "My family research" doesn't tell us much. Another tip is to type SURNAMES in capitals, so they attract attention ****Remember ALL posts to Rootsweb mailing lists are archived, so it is always checking there. Following the links from the main Rootsweb URL, at www.rootsweb.com or from http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and then inserting the name of the list whose archives you wish to search. **** FINALLY, remember the correct List etiquette is to ask permission of the List Owner before posting messages regarding a new Mailing List you have set up or mentioning any commercial organization. Please send details to the admin address or either of us directly. ************************************************************************* To join the following MAILING LISTS just add on -L-request@rootsweb.com to the end of the Required name. Hi everyone New Year, new subscriber. Actually I'm a bit of a fraud as I'm not researching my family but the Cromford Canal, so am interested in any references anyone comes across relating to people working on this waterway. Searching the last two years digests, I noticed Mavis Johnson's enquiry about the Cutts family. There was certainly a "Mr Cutts" (no Christian name given) prominent in the day to day activities of the Cromford Canal in the first few years of the 1800s, as evidenced by the minute books, and it seems likely that it is the same person who placed the following advert: Derby Mercury Thursday June 6th 1811. No 4125 Column 13 Wanted immediately upon the Cromford Canal A Carpenter; one that is well skilled in making and hanging Lock Gates. Such one being a good workman, may meet with constant employment and good wages by applying to Henry Cutts, Cromford Warf, Derbyshire A single man may have preference. Cromford Warf 4th june 1811 Permit books show that there was a Joseph Cutts steering for Wheatcrofts in 1816/17 and a Chas Cutts steering for the same company in 1835, both on the Cromford Canal. Hope that doesn't duplicate info already offered. -- Hugh Potter
Hunting for a man named SADLER who was a peddler on the canals, probably around Dudley or Birmingham area. I am in posession of a cup he sold. It is Lusterware, a product he carried on the barge. Than family remembers using this type of pottery/china, and getting it from him, but does not remember his name or the name of the boat. Hi Arthur.. The only THOMAS SLATER marriage to EMMA I have come across is one to EMMA ABBISS 7th March 1865 at Moxley, which is a bit late for you I think Happy Christmas, Regards Thelma
This message has been sent without an attachment. All the indications are that Thomas SLATER - barge boatman - (bn.1797 Tettenhall) married a second time to an Emma - (?) round abt 1849/50: very possibly in the Black Country...but by no means a certainty.......but where and when ? It's all very brickwall-ish and any pointers or information would be most welcome.......willing to grab at and investigate any straw ! Regards, Lakhri in the Staffordshire Moorlands.
A couple of web sites that may be useful www.ukcanals.net - lots of links www.jim-shead.co.uk - more links including some worldwide for those interested in waterways other than English ones. Use a link to get to Shardlow Heritage Centre which lists boatbuilders in the Shardlow in 1800s. Happy Christmas Helen

Dear Judy, No VIRUS, it is a HOAX! If you operate a Windows OS then you have the file named 'sulfnbk.exe'. It is not a critical file but you may have problems if you delete it. NEVER, EVER delete a file unless the recommendation comes from the company which produces the software involved or from the company supplying your anti-virus software. ALWAYS, ALWAYS keep your anti-virus program up to date. NEVER open an attachment unless you know it comes from a reputable sender AND they have identified in the body of their message that they did make an attachment and EXACTLY what that attachment is. If you have friends who like to forward you items without identifying what they are then delete those messages immediately and notify them you will only open attachments that they have identified. Just because they are careless when it comes to viruses is no reason for you to be. The ONLY exception to opening attachments that are not identified in the body of the email is if you have subscribed to a list in digest mode. In that case all list messages come as attachments but the list is setup so you cannot receive a virus through it. Remember, nothing can protect you if you are gullible enough to make deletions to your software without the advice of experts, MAKE VERY SURE that they are experts before you trust them. Click OK and follow the prompts. Windows 95 (or alternative method for Windows 98/Me) If you are using Windows 95, you need to use the extract command. This can also be used on Windows 98/Me. 1. Click Start, point to Find or Search, and then click Files or Folders. 2. Make sure that "Look in" is set to (C:) and that Include subfolders is checked. 3. In the "Named" or "Search for..." box, type: precopy1 4. Click Find Now or Search Now. If it does not exist on the hard drive, then insert the Windows installation CD and repeat the search on that drive. 5. When you find the file, write down the location of Precopy1, for example, C:\Windows\Options\Cabs. This is your Source Path. 6. The general form of the Extract command is: extract <Source Path>\precopy1.cab sulfnbk.exe /L c:\windows\command So if the source path is C:\Windows\Options\Cabs, then the Extract command becomes: extract c:\windows\options\cabs\precopy1.cab sulfnbk.exe /L c:\windows\command NOTE: If you installed Windows to a different location, make the appropriate substitution. 7. Click Start and then click Run. 8. Type the following, making the appropriate substitutions as previously noted extract <Source Path>\precopy1.cab sulfnbk.exe /L c:\windows\command 9. Click OK.
