    3. Thelma is obviously doing a great job on the 1881 census, and the information she's fed to me made me take a look at some census research I'd done locally related to the Cromford Canal. I'm not quite sure of the best way to summarise information held on database on this mailing list (any advice gratefully received!), so have pasted it in as comma separated values, hoping that anyone who wanted to could then import it into their own database. There is also included the results of searches of the Crich website relating to births, deaths and marriages. The order of fields is as follows: Year, Place, Surname. A little snippet from one of the latest releases from http://www.archivecdbooks.com The Universal British Directory - 1791 " Manchester - Navigation Inn - 31 Alport Lane - Samuel CUTT" -------------------------------------------------------- Does anyone have any early directories which might show how long Samuel Cutt was at this address? Does this pub still exist? I presume it was a canal side inn. Can someone please help me locate it on a map of Manchester (a new Manchester list subscriber with very little knowledge of the City) I have found an Abraham Henry CUTTS, Corn Factor at 16 Hanging Ditch, Manchester, in 1841.     3. 1881 Census This may be Henry Twells Cutts, b. c.1813 Cromford who died 13.11.1886 at Manchester, son of Thomas Cutts, a Bookkeeper/Clerk, and later Master of a Canal Boat owned by Samuel Wheatcroft in 1827 who m. Rebecca Smithhurst on 1.4.1812 Cromford. Does anyone recognise these families and can anyone supply any further information please ? Mavis, in Somerset, UK researching all CUTTS families.

    3. Hi List, One of my elusive ancestors Thomas DAWSON finally showed up on the 1901 census for England (below) 1901 Census 4 Eagle Lane Civil Tipton Ecc. St. Martins Ward Toll end Parl. Wednesbury Town Tipton RG 13/2736 Folio 19 Page 20 Thomas Dawson head m 36 Boatman Captain Worker Lancashire Preston Caroline Dawson wife m 36 Warwickshire Warwick Caroline Dawson daur s 10 Northamptonshire Northampton Thomas Dawson son s 8 Staffordshire Tipton George Dawson son s 4 Staffordshire Tipton Ann Savage Mother in law m 64 Staffordshire Stone His father's name was John DAWSON who appears to be deceased by the 1881 census (and hard to find on the 1871/61/51 censuses). His Wife's maiden name was Savage (Father George mother Ann - maiden name Wagstaff). The Dawsons, Savages and Wagstaffs mentioned above were pretty much "canal" families. Anyone see any connection? Captain John Smith Captain John Carmichele (Carmichael?) Captain George Carmichele (Carmichael?) Captain John Ridgeway They had been loading coal into their vessels from Earl Fitzwilliam's Elsecar Colliery (Barnsley, South Yorkshire), on the Elsecar branch of the Dearne and Dove Canal.     3. I am looking for any further information about Caleb GOULD (1743-1836) and his son, Joseph GOULD (1789-1871). Both men were lock keepers at Hambleden on the Thames near Henley. They lived (I believe) in the village of Rememham. After he retired Joseph migrated to Christchurch, New Zealand. Can anybody help me with where I might find company records about their appointment and/or their working lives? Any information about them would be most welcome especially if you are interest in the siblings or other relatives of either man. If any historical canal information is available on the Web I would be pleased if you could advise the site addresses because its otherwise a bit hard to come by in Tasmania, Australia.
