Hi All Have signed up to see if I have some luck this time. I am still looking for Thomas LISSIMORE and family, his siblings and parents etc. According to the IGI the family was from Gospel Oak, Staffs. He was born c 1780+, died before 1837. described on one reference as a boatman. I have not found his birth, nor that of his wife Elizabeth who was a Moore according to one daughter, possibly from Amblecote, nor their marriage. When he was dead the family was in West Bromwich but at the moment I have not found the childrens births either. Have more churches to check there. Good hunting beth in Toronto
I am new to the list and wondered if anyone had any information on Canal Boat people in the West Midlands from the mid 1800's to early 1900s. My GGGrandparents were Canal Boat People on the West Midlands Canals and their children were also on the boats for some years. Their names were WILLIAM HODGKINS AND SARAH (NEE DOVEY). They had ten children six of whom lived to adulthood. I have good information on four of the six, but desperately need help on their son RILEY HODGKINS who was born in April 1870 at Bourne Hills Colliery, Rowley Regis. He was with his parents on the 1871 census, but I cannot find him on the 1881 (he was not with his parents then). I have information on him from 1893 to 1915 and again in 1927 (Court Appearances) all in Wolverhampton, but do not know if he was married or when he died. I have no record of any of the family on the 1891 census. Any information would be appreciated about RILEY (who sometimes called himself William) and also any information about Bourne Hills Colliery, Rowley Regis would be interesting. WILLIAM AND SARAH HODGKINS other surviving children were all female and were Clara, Esther, Agnes (my great grandmother) Ellen and Rosina. Any information on these would also be brilliant. Many Thanks Sue Jones __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hello Tony, Sam Deeley would have worked at a stop lock. So called because this was were the boat had to stop to pay the tolls that were due. It was a single lock on a flat stretch of water as opposed to a pair with a pound between. The boat could only pass when Sam opened it. Being employed by the BCN, he may have lived in one of their cottages (when and if available). You should be able to pick them up in the census returns. When you've got an address, take a look at a canal map and you will see the nearest stop lock. That's not to say that this was his but may well have been. There is the Bromford Stop just south of Oldbury, Sam may have worked here. Liz, >Unfortunately my gg granddad John Sheldon died before the 1841 census I >do however have the MI, Copy of the church death record, and his death >cert. All three state that his trade as a Boatman. These three should all say the same anyway I would have thought. What about his marraige ? Were any children baptised ? Was the marraige at a church or the boatmans chapel ? >In the 1841 census Susannah states she is a widow and her occupation is >that of a Boating Agent living on the Oldbury Road. Is this Oldbury Road Smethwick. If so, this lies alongside the two bits of the Birmingham - Wolverhampton canal. There is the older winding level and the later (and deeper, straighter) Birmingham level. Both are part of the BCN. Just nearby is the Bromford Stop and lots of wharves. > >I am seeking to find some possible answers to the following, but I am at >at a loss as to where I should look. > >1. Where would my gg gran have possibly worked in that area ? From her own front parlour or if she was very busy she may have rented/owned premises canalside. She should appear in trade directories of the time. >2. Is there such a thing as records that where kept for the Boat folks? Yes, gauging registers, Gauging registers describe the boat and name it, cargo, give the boat owner and sometimes the boat operator. The problem is that they are all over the place and not in one central location. For the Midlands area in general, first try Walsall Local History Centre, or Sandwell Local Studies Dept. at Smethwick. You could also get in touch with Ellesmere Port Boat Museum and the Britsh Waterways Museum at Gloucester Docks. If she traded with any of the large concerns you might at a stretch find trade records somewhere. >3. Is this work a family trade on the canals that is passed down ? Yes, frequently you will find families who all work on the canal. Brothers, fathers, grandfathers. Women as well. But not all doing the same thing. You can get variations say boat loader, Steerer, Boat Owner, Contractor etc. You also get intermarraige between boatee families. Does your research mention anywhere the term 'dayboatman'. If so he could very well be local born, Other wise if he was an owner boat man he could have come from any place along the cut. The 1841 census will say if Susannah was born out of county. >Any guidence of where to look for Boat folks in fiche, books, or any >other sources would be very much welcomed and appreciated. > Books can be had from the museums mentioned. You could also try Braunston. If you want addresses just holler. Phil in Hales Owen.
I am compiling a book on the canal families who worked the boats from Preston to Lancaster. My family the Ashcrofts were one of the main families but I also want to include details of others. I have been through some of the Preston censuses and taken details of the families on the individual boats at the time and am getting together an index of them. I also have details from the 1881 census of the families when they were moored along the canal on census night as far as Kendal. I haven't had access to the other censuses except Preston yet and if anyone has any information on any canal people in those areas I would be very grateful. Also if anyone thinks their family may have been on the boats, especially at Preston basin in the last century mostly, I may be able to help them, although my list is by no means complete. I feel that I probably received and did not open a virus with a different heading today. The subject line read something about "Your webpage photos" I did not know the person who sent it. It did not contain an attachment but wanted me to click to a web site.
