Hi Folks. you will see a slight change from now on in the list, in that I have realised more and more lately that many of the people who workrd on wharves and as toll collectors and lock keeper and officials, may very well have been boatmen originally, so I have started to put them in. Hi Listers, I am a new member, and would very much appreciate any help to find my family, Thomas DAVIS m Martha DAVIS ( nee DAVIS ) both born BISLEY. date unknown, only clue is they had a son Alfred b 1842 in Browns Hill, he married in 1860 Brimscombe. In 1842 Thomas Davis was a Boatman in 1860 on Alfred`s m. certificate he was a Waterman , ( Alfred too, became a Waterman age 18 or maybe before that ) , just wondered if Father & Son are listed on a BOAT REGISTER. ALFRED DAVIS passed away at France Lynch in 1878. I have Alfred`s details, but Thomas & Martha and any siblings they may have had are my missing links, cannot find their marriage in BISLEY, may have to follow the Canal route to find it, Staffordshire could be a likely place. Cheerio Knobbly ( Cheshire )
Dear Lorna I can help you the marriage you are looking for was on 1st July 1860 between Richard Humphreys (Bach) of Wardle 29yrs Labourer & Caroline Fairclough (Sp) of Beeston 23yrs at St Boniface Church, Beeston Brook, Bunbury, Cheshire. This is my Gt,Gt Grandfathers sister and after this marriage we have been unable to locate her on any census after 1861 when she is visiting her parents. if you have any other information I would be most grateful. Her husband is NOT a boatman at his marriage but 2 of Carolines brothers are boatmen during the 1840's and after. Regards Irene

Canal Boats Acts, 1877 and 1884 - my guess is these are probably what you are after - these Acts regulated living conditions of board canal boats, a register was kept by the local authority and the details of each boat had to be entered. The info recorded included size and type of boat, owner's and master's names, fate of the boat, and regulated how many people were permitted to work/live on board the vessel. Many of these registers are in county records offices local to the waterway they related to, for instance, of those for the Lancaster Canal the Kendal Register is in the Cumbria (Kendal) CRO, whilst the Preston one is in the Lancashire (Preston) CRO, although some for other waterways may be in the waterways museums at Gloucester and Ellesmere Port. -- Cheers, Anne mailto:Anne.Nichols@ukgateway.net Webmistress: http://stop.at/canalcaholic

Hi Canal Listers, I'm new here as I have been recommended to ask you for some Help or Guidance. My gggggf, William BLOOR has put in a first appearance on his son's Marriage Cert for a Burslem wedding in 1848. William's occupation is given as Wharfinger, and it has been suggested that there may be a number of Bloor's in canal based work at this time. Does anyone have any advice on the matter or anywhere to look (other than the usual) that may be canal connected? TIA, Cheers, Robin Robin Bloore, Surrey, England. Does anybody know the whereabouts of the records or archives for the operation of Thames locks near Henly for the 1830s and 1840s? Did the Thames Concervancy take over these records when it was established in 1857 or did the City of London retain them? I have a father and a son who were successively the pound keeper at Rememham (Caleb and Joseph GOULD). I wondered if any official records were available as a source of additional information about both their employment and their residence. Any information or suggestions will be most welcome.
