Dear Joan, What a lovely surprise this morning - got your copies of Les Hales' notes of the boats, 'Clara', 'Hydra', 'Margaret' and 'Only Daughter' owned by Thomas and James Cutts of Old Radford. Thomas was the father of James Cutts bapt 13.4.1828 Radford. James was married to a Sarah c.1849 (not yet identified - possibly Sarah Pear m. 3.10.1849 Basford St. Leo's) Thomas Cutts, son of William and Elizabeth Cutts was baptised at Bilborough 12.6.1803 and buried at Radford St. Peters 2.7.1887 aged 76, indicating that the Clara was probably 'leased out' after his death until its sale in 1888, or could it have been towed by another boat mastered by his son James? I remember seeing canal barges towing others down the River Trent in my childhoold. I am inclined to believeThomas's marriage was to a Mary Bates at Kinoulton 18th October, 1824. Kinoulton is very close to the old Limeyards between Cropwell Bishop and Kinoulton, Notts. The fact that they traded in coal, gravel, lime and bricks, to Cropwell, Stanton, and Nottingham, and coal and lime to Derby, Leicester and Nottingham and gravel in the Nottingham District helps put them into the framework more accurately. This makes the Shardlow/Sawley area more significant. In addition to limeyards a Cropwell Bishop, Notts, (and Ticknall, Derbyshire) there were gravel pits at Attenborough and Holme Pierrepont, and I believe there were brickworks at Stanton and also at Carlton. Perhaps Les could confirm this? Any researchers of this family, please do let me know so we can expand the picture. Regards, Mavis in Somerset, researching all CUTTS in East Midlands.

Hi, I am new to this list and was wondering how I can find records of families I am researching. I have Fairclough's who on the childrens birth certificates state they are boatmen. They are born in Cheshire. Have some children in Wales and then in Staffordshire. Can SKS point me in the right direction. TIA Irene
Hi List I am new to this list and need some help and advice from SKS please. I have just started researching my husband's family. His grandparents, William GARDNER and Maria MONK were married on 8th December 1915, and their marriage certificate states that William was a canal boatman, residing at Stockton at the time of his marriage. His father was Charles GARDNER, occupation a former canal boatman. Maria MONK is shown on the certificate as the daughter of Henry MONK, also a canal boatman, although her address was Sanders Street, Warwick i.e. land-based. I understand that William GARDNER ran tar boats on the canals for Fellows and Moreton. His birth was never registered, but his christening was, although he always told family members that he remembered walking to his christening in Long Itchington church. His father Charles Gardner apparently came from the Birmingham area, and was born of a canal boat family. Supposedly, so too was Henry Monk. What I want to know is how to go backwards from here. As William had no birth certificate, and his father was also a canal boatman, I don't quite know where to start. Do I use the conventional records, or is there somewhere else I should search for canal boat peoples records? Any help and advice would be very much appreciated. Sorry if I'm being thick! Ann Gardner
Dear Catherine, My father's family were boat people on both sides for a number of generations and I have Watkinsons, Boltons and Garners. Other surnames are Culshaw, Lamb, Melling. I can go back to my ggg grandparents on some branches. If you let me have details of your tree, I'll see if I can link it to mine. The most hopeful would appear to be Margaret Garner and Richard Bolton. Their daughter, Margaret Bolton, b1852, was the mother of my grandmother, Margaret Watkinson. Have you seen the book Burscough Boatmen and their Families? Yo might find some useful info in there. There is a long listing of marriages between boat people. it certainly seems to be the case that they tended to marry within the community. Margaret Parkinson (nee Watkinson)
