    1. [CANAL-PEOPLE] Watermen of Newark
    2. Neil and Viv Porteus
    3. We have recently established that our GGGGrandfather, William Asling/Astling (born around 1806), was a waterman based at Newark. Can anyone recommend any books on the subject of watermen based on Newark and the surrounding area.

    2. Phil Lamb
    3. Lin, What other info do you have on this individual ? Does it give this same place on his birth certificate ? If you picked up this place of birth from the 1881 CD's it might be a good idea to look at the film as well. I would think that a place called Canal Bridge would be unlikely, but I may be wrong. There are lots of transcription errors on those CD's. Have you got the same place in any other census's. ? I am trying to trace an ancestor HENRY ADAMS b. 1839 Canal Bridge, Stafford, England. That address is even listed on the 1881 Census at West Brom where he was living then with his family. Would anyone know if Canal Bridge was acutally along the STAFFORDSHIRE & WORCEESTERSHIRE CANAL? I have been making enquiries on the Staffs. Gen. List and have been told that it might be somewhere between Baswich and Hazelstrine Bridge. - where is the Hazelstrine Bridge - is it at the bottom of Wildwood? I couldnt locate it on the new map. I've found Hazelstrine Lane there. I also notice on the Waterways and Locks website that Hazelstrine Bridge is listed. There also used to be a Hazelstrine Village back in 1889 - again I found this from the old maps. I would be very grateful for any information on Canal Bridge and its location. 1. [CANAL-PEOPLE] Background books
    2. Hugh Potter
    3. A couple of books that researchers might like to consult for background information about the life and times of ancestors working on the canals. Both are long out of print I'm afraid, but libraries might have them. Both are by Harry Hanson. The first is The Canal Boatmen 1760-1914 (Manchester University Press, 1975, ISBN 0 7190 0575 2) which is a well referenced book based, I think, on a university thesis. It looks in detail at the people who worked on the boats and the effects of railway competition. It gives probably the best researched answers as to when families began to live on boats and why (decline of male operated fly-boats as railways took the faster traffic, slower boats predominated, less money for captains; wives and children were 'free' labour). The second is The Canal People (David & Charles, 1978, ISBN 0 7153 7559 8), which is a more 'readable' book, containing very more diluted information about boatmen but also about other canal workers. -- Hugh Potter

I have a look at the Genealogy.com web page. This is what was originally called Genforum.com and I too was sadden to see the changes. However, When I had a look at the page, it is asking those who want to post a query to register simply a User Name and Password. This is, I suspect to prevent people of the not genealogical fraternity from posting dubious web pages. There is no mention of inserting your credit card details. I have, in the past used the Genforum site and my previous messages were still on the various sites. I have just been on and registered my address and set up a password so that I can, if I wish post to the forum. However, I would, and this is my PERSONAL view, be very wary of using the Web Page facility and loading up any personal details. I hope that my comments helps. 3. Madge, Rowington is on the Grand Union canal on the section between Warwick & Birmingham. Lapworth is about 2 1/2 miles further north and is where the Stratford to Birmingham canal kisses the GU. The Rowington section is on the level but Lapworth has about 25 or so locks. 1. [CANAL-PEOPLE] Canal families Lancaster canal Churchhouse family
    2. Trying to find details of the Churchhouse family who worked the Lancaster canal in the 19th century. James and Margaret Churchhouse were on the 'Pet' at Ellel, Nr Lancaster on the 1881 census with their large family, most of which were born in Preston, but some at Galgate. nr Lancaster and Holme in Westmorland. In 1861 they were on a fly boat in Glasson Dock. The Churchhouse family is one of several that I am researching for a book about life on the above canal, James's wife Margaret was also from a canal family, the Hamptons. If anyone has any details about any of the families or boats on the Lancaster canal I would be grateful. Janet Rigby
