Hello everyone, Could someone please help me to open PDF files from internet sites. All I get in the top left of screen is a small icon which is square with red, green and blue shapes inside it. This happens everytime I come across PDF file links. I have the Acrobat Reader 5 installed, which opens all my CD's without problem. No matter what I try, it will not open this icon. I just get an error message that the file must be corrupted in some way. I get very frustrated because I miss out on such a lot of information, usually catalogues etc. Linda Briggs Linda.Briggs1@btinternet.com

Hi all, Having been successful at getting request through to NWM a week ago, they are sending me what info. they have found, through the post---marvellous service!!!! Regards Chris
Forwarded, by request of Brian Randell Hi We are seeking volunteers to fill vacancies that have arisen for county page developers in GENUKI, the UK & Ireland Genealogical information service, particularly but not solely in Scotland. GENUKI is widely regarded as the premier on-line source for information about UK genealogy - it now contains more than 30,000 pages, occupying over 450 Mbytes of information, and over fifty people (many of whom have further helpers) are involved in its maintenance. The counties concerned are: ENGLAND - Berkshire, London, Middlesex, Shropshire, Somerset, Surrey SCOTLAND - Banffshire, Berwickshire, Bute, Dunbartonshire, Dumfriesshire, Kincardineshire, Midlothian, Moray, Nairnshire, Peebles-shire, Renfrewshire, Roxburghshire, Selkirkshire, Shetland, Stirlingshire, Sutherland, West Lothian WALES - Merionethshire, Monmouthshire The main requirements of county page volunteers are threefold: 1. Either considerable experience of family research in the specific area(s), or local knowledge and contacts within the area. 2. The ability to create simple HTML pages directly and also maintain them (including a basic understanding of HTML, directory structure management, and FTP). 3. Lots of enthusiasm! The work involved in taking responsibility for a county page is described at http://www.genuki.org.uk/org/guide.html. The amount of work that county page developers do varies considerably, and is of course governed by the amount of time they have available, the extent to which they can enlist the help of others - as indeed many have successfully done - and the level of ambition that they set for their pages. This is of course influenced by what other volunteers are managing elsewhere on their GENUKI county and parish pages - many of which have become rather impressive! However, we are keen to get to the stage where all the rest of our counties have at least basic information pages for all of their parishes. I'd be happy to try and answer any queries from potential volunteers for the above counties - and would also encourage people interested in helping with any of the other counties to contact the respective county page maintainer directly. (His/her name is to be found via the link to GENUKI maintainers near the foot of the GENUKI main page, http://www.genuki.org.uk/.) Anyone interested in helping with the Ireland section of GENUKI, which also has a number of vacancies, is invited to contact Richard White <white@hiwaay.net>. cheers Brian Randell Brian.Randell@newcastle.ac.uk --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Museums Collection on Line The project to itemise the collection of the waterways museums and to put the catalogue on line has just come to fruition, and can be accessed through the National Waterways Museum¹s web site at www.nwm.org.uk. Under the title of the National Inland Waterways Collection, over 14,000 objects are listed, with facilities to search by waterway, personal, corporate, place or boat name, content, or object linked to the Waterways Objects Name Thesaurus, which in itself is a valuable dictionary¹ of waterway terms. Many of the museums¹ artefacts have been photographed and images of these can be viewed on line, in some cases, such as Gifford¹s cabin stool, from three different angles. The site promises to be a valuable resource for researchers unable to get to Gloucester or for preliminary research prior to a visit. § There is an even more ambitious plan to catalogue all The Waterways Trust¹s archives, plus other British Waterways archives not held by BW or TWT, onto the web, but the sheer size of this undertaking means that it will not be available for at least another two years. -- Hugh Potter Researching the Cromford Canal's History

Hi John, Many thanks for advice about Waterways Museum. I'll e-mail them right now!1 Is it possible for anyone to look-up for me on the 1891 census for Frederick Butler, the boatman above, knowing my luck with this one, he was on the canal at the time and won't show up! ======In the 1881 census he was at home with his widowed mum and 2 brothers at 28 Macdonald Street Birmingham. Many thanks Chris.

Chris In light of the address it is probable that if Fred owned a boat it would have been on the Birmingham canal Navigation (BCN) The national Waterways museum keep the gauging records including this era on a database. If you e mail them they will check their records to see if any boats were 'registered' to Butlers. It will be worth checking the family as some times the boats were gauged on behalf of wife and other family members the a mail address is info@nwm.demon.co.uk All the best John Carrington ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Weymouth" <chris.weymouth@ntlworld.com> To: <CANAL-PEOPLE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 16, 2002 7:51 PM Subject: [CANAL-PEOPLE] butler-boatman > Hi all, > Loopking for anyone with connections to the Butler family. > Have my wife,s g,g,father Frederick Butler b.1871, 2 brothers Edward H and > William.-----widowed mother Sophia...all living at 28 Macdonald Street Birmingham > in 1881 census. > Frederick was a boatman, possibly owner. > Q. are there any canal archives I can access listing boats/owners/staff??? > Many thanks > Chris. > > > ==== CANAL-PEOPLE Mailing List ==== > C J Genealogical Collections > Web Page http://freespace.virgin.net/genealogical.collections > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 >
