    1. [CANAL-PEOPLE] HARAM/HARRAM/ARAM//ARRAM/HAREM -Yorkshire/Lincolnshire
    2. Hello,I have just joined the list.I am searching for my ancestors with the above name-the spelling can change so I have added JUST about all the spellings I have see used.I am particulatly looking for THOMAS and KITTY HARAM-they married in Sculcoates Hull in 1824--had a son and daughte that i have info of.Possible more children.William my gt gt grandad-gives Thomas's employment as STEWARD when HE --William -married in 1840.Mary Jane married late in life in Gainsborough-gives her deceased father as a shoemaker.I have not seen anything of Kitty since Mary-Jane was baptised in Gainsborough-as was William-though born in Hull.AS they have ties to Gainsborough-and as there appears family at Burton Stather-COULD be that they were on boats. Would the Hull ferry have a steward?Would be glad of help.TIA.Jean--in Evesham

    3. Starting today (Monday, 10 June) and extending over several days, RootsWeb is going to be moving the list servers and other machines. No messages sent are expected to be lost, but the lists will be down for a while when it happens; please don't post "why aren't I getting mail" during that time.....you will when it comes back up, and you don't want half of it to be everyone on the list asking why aren't they getting mail. <g> If you have trouble reaching other RW servers this week, it's probably for the same reason; try again in an hour or two or three..... 3. Hi, I'm looking for information on my great grandfather - Almond Hartwell - who worked as a boatman/pilot on the Rideau Canal System in Ontario, Canada and/or possibly on the Great Lakes. He would have worked between 1847-1900? He was born in the Newboro, Ontario, Canada area. Last time in Ontario Census 1871. Had a son named Arthur Miller Hartwell, b. 1875, d. 1955 who was also a pilot on the Rideau Canal System, and I believe worked out of the Perth, Ontario area. I would appreciate any information on Almond Hartwell that anyone can give me, or if there is another area/avenue that I might check. It is possible, that Almond left Canada, after the year of 1875-76 and headed out of Canada on board a ship, probably working as a boatman. Thanks very much. Nancy Hartwell Muntz smuntz@vianet.on.ca

They had 4 children that I can find: Joshua b.1817, John (my gggrandfather) b.1820 at Ashton-under-Lyne, James b.1823 and Frances b.1826. All John's siblings were baptised at Marsden, Buckley Hill Independent, Yorkshire but there is no trace of John. Any help would be most appreciated. Regards, Bob. (Sydney Australia).

    1. [CANAL-PEOPLE] Samuel GRAY/GREY - of Fishlake.
    2. Gordon
    3. I am a new member to this list - and looking for my gt.gt.grandfather, Samuel GRAY (or GREY) a "Boatman" in the 1851 census. He came from Fishlake, near Thorne, near Doncaster, but was not "at-home" in the 1851 census, with his wife, Sarah, and three children, Eliza(1833), Samuel(1836), and Emily(1841), so, I presume he could be anywhere on the River Don, Trent, or on other Canals. Emily is my Gt.grandmother, married my Gt.grandfather, George DYSON, at Halifax P.C. in 1866, on the Certificate, Samuel is described as "Sailor". (so Samuel could also have worked on the Calder & Hebble Canal.) Samuel was born in Fishlake in 1800, son of another Samuel GRAY and Hannah (LELAW). Any information on possible location of Samuel in 1851 census, or other GRAY family connections, would be very welcome. Gordon Dyson

    1. [CANAL-PEOPLE] Researching WICKSON
    2. Rob & Marg
    3. Greetings all, I am a new lister and I write from New Zealand. I am researching my 3rd great grandparents and their family who our family legends and myths etc tell were barge people in the canal area around Oxford. His name was Thomas WICKSON. His wife and my 3rd great grandmother is completely unknown to us here in the far antipodes. Family knowledge also states that Thomas Wickson lived in Tenement 2 in Fisher Row, Oxford on 30 Dec. 1841. This comes from "Fisher Row, Fishermen, Bargemen & Canal Boatmen in Oxford 1500-1900", by Mary Prior, and is located in Appendix III on page 357. Thomas Wickson's daughter, Ann Maria Wickson married George Hancox of Tysoe in 1858. The couple emigrated to New Zealand in 1873 where they became farmers and were held in high esteem by their fellow citizens. They are buried in the Peria Cemetery in the Oruru Valley in northern New Zealand. I would be most grateful for ANY help, clues, possible sources/research options, or advice that anyone can pass me. My New Zealand records relating to this couple and their descendant lines are available to anyone interested. Rob Knight Paraparaumu S 40 54, E 174 59 New Zealand
