Hi Gill, Thanks for putting on this URL. John Green was my gran`s brother, and was the last of many generations to work on the canals. My gran also worked on the canal boats prior to her marriage. I first saw some info on John on "The Friends of Lancashire" web page in December - by David Kitching (which reminds me - I owe David an email re John Greens family!). I hadn`t seen these other pages - so thanks a lot! Most of the boats were named after his immediate family. Hello Mel I don't know why you could not get into the site. I have had a message from someone on the list who has and I have just tried it now and got through successfully to www.silk.net/personal/gordonb/61canalboats.htm I am not surprised you didn't get anywhere with www.silk.net. I found the site by searching at www.google.com, a very good search engine. Try searching "canal boatmen Worcester" (Be warned, there were one or two listings on this page that quite surprised me. Just thought I'd tell you in case you might have any elderly maiden aunts who had led sheltered lives looking over your shoulder). You could also try other locations. Perhaps you will have better luck if you try again. Good luck. Hi Kenneth, Sorry I cannot tell you anything about your great grandmother Elizabeth Hewitt. However, I have a Hewitt connection. My GGgrandmother's name was Emma Hewitt, Christened Feb 4, 1920, in Coventry, Saint Michael, Warwick. May have been born in 1817. Her parents were William Hewitt and Catherine ? Emma Hewitt married John Woodhead. In the 1851 Census they lived on Much Park Street, Coventry and had three children. Martha Hewitt Woodhead, Selina, and Henry Hewitt Woodhead. In the 1881 Census at 8 Ct. 5 Much Park St. Coventry lived Emma Woodhead and three grandaughters. Martha Bott, Emma Bott, and Lucy Bott. No mention of John Woodhead. Don't know if there could be a connection or not. Thanks for any connection that can be made. I, too, have hit that proverbial brick wall with one Mahala Thompson. Several of us are likening finding her to the lpossibility of coming upon the holy grail... Nonetheless, I am trying here. Her data: b. 1772 [NY or CT] resided Rhinebeck NY at some point mar. John VanBenschoten and lived in NYC they had several children she died 1834 in New York City; buried in Cypress Hills Cemetery, Brooklyn NY. The VanBenschoten family book states she is "of Connecticut parentage". A cousin is theorizing that perhaps the rivers and canals in the Connecticut-New York area are a clue to her whereabouts and the identity of her parents. Any help from anyone? Thanks in advance~ Carole Kessel Kenney ex-NY, now PA / USA
Hi to everybody, Another new lister who had hit the proverbial brick wall and would like some help if possible. My G-G-Grandfather, Robert MILLWARD, was born in Worcester in 1826 (According to the family bible). He married in 1852 in Wolverhampton to Mary Ann OWEN (born Coventry 1835) and on his marriage certificate both his and his father, John's occupation was given as Boatman. That is the only information I have. I have looked through the 1851 census for Wolverhampton, but cannot find them. Mary Ann had a child in 1853 at Lower Green, Tipton and the person present at death was a Mary Ann BRIDGES. I found Mary Ann OWEN on the 1851 census for Lower Green living with her grandmother, Nancy BRIDGES, who was a widow of 85 and her occupation was a Pauper Boatwoman. I have also been through the records at Worcester, but to no avail. Anybody with any ideas or suggestions. Hello everyone, I have just come across a very useful website that contains many links (far too many to list here) on various canals, their history and some museums etc.. Just click your mouse on the following; www.ukwaterways.net/ring/classified.shtml As I am new to this list I apologise In advance if somebody else has posted this before. Many thanks. Steven Jones In Salford,UK.
Something went wrong with my first try so here it is again. Hi everyone I just found out about this list so sorry you have all drawn the "short straw" - I intend to stay around for a while!! My GGG Grandfather was Edward READING. At the time of his first child's (Joseph or John) birth in 1828 his occupation was "boatman" Edward married Selina Clarridge on November 6 1826 at Holy Trinity Coventry. This man is the major "brick wall" in my research so if any one could help me, I can assure it will be appreciated. Thanks in advance and cheers, Peter Reading Victoria, Australia
Hi, This Is my first posting having only recently discovered this list but, I have known for quite a while that my ancestors worked on the rivers and canals In the above areas. My details are as follows; My great x3 grandfather, James WORTHINGTON was bapt' at Warrington In 1813 to parents William and Jane, the fathers occupation Is shown as a `Mariner` of `Bank Quay` Warrington which I believe Is an area near the River Mersey. The IGI shows a marriage at `Runcorn` (which Is just down the river) of a William WORTHINGTON to a Jane MONKS In 1806 but, so far I have not managed to check the event In the register Itself. James later married Sarah MILLETT at `Eccles` In 1837 before moving to `Salford` then `Manchester` where he worked on the canals around the `Castlefield` district. On the later bapt' records of his children he Is shown at various times as either a `Boatman` an `Iceman` a `Waterman` then, In his later life a `Warehouseman` which I think he may have worked In the many warehouses along the canals In the centre of Manchester. I would be pleased to share or exchange Info with anyone researching along the same lines. Many thanks. Steven Jones. In Salford,UK.
Thanks Eilleen: Sorry to have been a bother, but I now know what others mean when they ask for a lookup. There certainly seem to be a lot of publications of interest for the descendants of Canal People.... we need only the money to send for them.... Cheers! G'day Eilleen, Saw this email (below) and wonder if you have a William Greaves aged about 60-65 years around 1851 as a waterman in your book?
