    3. Hello Listers:- The following two families in the 1881 census are ancestors of mine. Elizabeth Hewitt was my great grandmother. Does anyone have knowledge or reference to them? The lived in Selly Oak Birmingham on a lane leading to the Bristol canal bank and I think they worked the canals in the area. 3. There appears to be several people on the list who are totally new to this fascinating and addictive hobby. I therefore thought it worth mentioning the following information as a kind of "started kit". For descriptions and addresses of mailing lists and MUCH more Genealogy resources on the Internet http://members.aol.com/johnf14246/gen_mail.html For those researching the UK. This informative site is well worth a visit. You can start in one county and follow links through different Counties, making use of the information and surnames listings available. All that travelling without leaving the armchair and finding a parking space<VBG>. UK & Ireland Genealogical Information Service -- Main Page http://www.genuki.org.uk/ There is also www.genforum.com a message board system for surnames etc. As a started book for genealogy I can thoroughly recommend Ancestral Trails published by the Society of Genealogists and Sutton Publishing and Written by Mark Heber. Hope this is of interest. Regards Julie Goucher [email protected]

    3. Thanks, John, for the Lapworth information. Probably more interesting than you could have thought. I'm not a 100 percent sure till I check up well, but I think you may have helped me find the family's first bigamist! Our cupboard is full of skeletons but a bigamist was missing! I'll let you know when I find out. Cheers, Geoff

    3. Hi Tony I'm looking for PARKER's, my wife's family. I know that Samuel Parker came up from Lincolnshire sometime between him marrying Maria Barton in May 1849 at Spalding, Lincs, and the birth of their first child in Wakefield in May 1850. I have Samuel on the 1851 census but after that he just isn't at home but his wife is not a widow. He must have come home sometime as they had kids in 1850, 1852, 1854, 1856, 1858, 1860, and 1862. His occupation on the baptisms runs through waterman, canalman, and mariner. He died in 1878. The main problem is that on the 1851 census he claimed to be born in Boston, Lincs, but I have checked all the parish registers and can't find his baptism. I'm hoping that if I can find him on another census he may be more specific. 2. Leslie Prpich
    3. Hello! In the 1881 census, George BOUGH was listed as (dwelling) Canal Side, Walsall Foreign, Staffordshire. George was born in Worcester in 1844 (baptised at St. Helen), son of George and Mary BOUGH. George's wife Mary was from Wales. Their children were Hannah, John, Richard, Mary, George, Jane and Maria BOUGH. My interest is in John, born 1868. He later married Ann FRYER at Ogley Hay. If anyone on this list is connected to this family, I would love to hear from you. Cheers, Leslie in Victoria, British Columbia

    3. Hi everybody, May I say how pleased I am to find the Canal list. It's a very special subject which probably contributed very much to the migration of our ancestors and the consequent brick walls in searching for them. Myself, I am interested in finding out more about the LAPWORTH and FLOWERS families. They were related. They both operated out of Nuneaton, Warks from the 1840s to about 1930 but due to the nature of the occupation may have spread, though I suspect more that the men may have imported wives to Nuneaton. I believe that the LAPWORTHs had their own barges. Is there an index somewhere where barge owners and their routes, types of cargo etc. are listed? Or am I being too optimistic? If any of you stumble across either of these names I should be very grateful if you would let me know. Geoff in Helsinki

    1. [CANAL-PEOPLE] Septhon
    2. Hi! I've just subscribed to the list in the hope I can find someone else with SEPHTON connections. James SEPHTON born Stockwith / Misterton, Notts 1785, moved to Foleshill WAR and married Sarah ROLLASON 1806. The family were canal boat builders of Foleshill, but spent some time in Leighton Buzzard (?delivering a boat), and also seem to have had connections with Oldbury, Staffs. The extended family also seemed to be landlords of several Inns in the Alderman's Green area of Foleshill (Greyhound, New, Boat, Bird in the Hand). I'd love to hear of anyone with SEPHTON connections... Best wishes Carole (Sheffield)

    1. Re: [CANAL-PEOPLE] HEEDS, BURGESS etc. New member
    2. Hi Eric, I am afraid I have nothing to offer on Heeds or Burgess, but I am interested in MILLWARD. I am also researching MILLWARD in Staffordshire, but without much success. According to our Family Bible Robert MILLWARD was born at Worcester in 1826. He married in 1852 in Wolverhampton to one Mary Ann OWEN, who was born in Coventry, but the year before her marriage could be found living in Tipton with her grandmother, Nancy BRIDGES. On their marriage certificate both Robert and his father, John's occupations were given was Watermen. >From there Robert and Mary Ann moved around the area until they came to Birmingham and settled there. At some point Robert gave up the boatman's life and worked on the railway before becoming a drayman in Birmingham. That is the only information I have and for years I have been trying to progress further than this point but without any success. I have not managed to track down either Robert or John before the marriage in 1852. They were not even on the census of Wolverhampton in 1851. I don't know if any of this bears any relationship to your study, but if you feel there is a connection I would be delighted to hear from you. Regards Jackie Kidderminster, Worcestershire.

    2. In and around 1890 - would a young boy who had run away from home be taken on the canal boats to work.? My grandfather Henry ran away when he was around 8 - and he was a canal boatman through adult life - so I wonder how hard it would have been in those days for him to be taken on as help - in other words - would it have been legal.?
