    1. [CANAL-PEOPLE] CANAL-PEOPLE-D Digest V00 #32
    2. Does anyone have any information on William COX, a boatman from northern Staffordshire/Cheshire, who was married to a woman named Louisa. I found a baptism in the Christ Church, Tunstall records for a Sarah COX daughter of William COX and Louisa. Abode was listed as Tunstall and his occupation was Boatman. I think he may have been brother to my great great grandfather, John COX, and engineer. Thank you for any information. Laura Bradley Groton Connecticut USA

    3. Hello Listers Has anybody come across a Daniel Rockingham born about 1770. Died in Potterspury workhouse 1843 age 73. He has brickwalled a few of us so am attempting to if his parents were canal people. He was a labourer building the Grand Union canal between Yardley Gobion and Wolverhampton. A few ROCKINGHAMS have been mentioned as boatmen but that does not necessarily mean that they lived on boats. Would appreciate any suggestion. Regards Pete

Incidentally, I believe I wrote Brandrick not Brandreth? She wrote to say how very helpful you are!! There's an Internet accolade for you! Do you possess any records of Ayars/Ayers or Pearson? Thank you. Tony Conolly (in Wales).

    1. [CANAL-PEOPLE] Bargees found at Runcorn, 1861 (http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/8555/
    2. Barbara Terrace
    3. Hello Listers, Just to introduce myself. My name is Barbara Terrace and some of my ancestors were flatmen/bargees/watermen. My main surname in this field is HOLDEN and they were from the Great Sankey area of Lancashire. They obviously thought it was worthwhile changing their occupation from cordwainer to flatman/waterman when the Sankey Canal was built. Of course having these sort of people in your family does make life difficult especially when, as mine did, crossed over the River Mersey into Cheshire to marry whilst they were travelling up and down the waterways. Whilst looking for another branch of my family in Runcorn in Cheshire on the 1861 census I came across some watermen tied up at the quays in Runcorn and duly wrote them down and posted them to the Cheshire Mailing List (and others) where Helen kindly linked it to the Geocities for Cheshire. So if you think that you have "lost" ancestors in this period try looking on this site to see if they are in Cheshire. It is surprising how far these Canal People travelled. Happy Searching. Barbara http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/8555/bargees.html

    3. Thanks James, it seems you are quite right. Norm Holt also answered me and said that it was simply a somewhat meandering canal following the contours at 300 feet above sea level. Cheers Geoff in Helsinki

    1. Re: [CANAL-PEOPLE] Contour Canal?
    2. James D Barlow
    3. I have an idea that when a contour canal was built it would follow the contours wherever possible, rather than having cuttings, tunnels, locks etc. Early surveyors/engineers such as Brindley would have built his canals in this way. However, I eagerly await someone else answering your question, in case I am wrong. Having been a member of the Inland Waterways Association for over 40 years, I ought to be able to answer questions like this!!!
