    3. Hi, I am new to this list. If I am asking an inappropriate question for this list please feel free to advise me,.....nicely please. Apparently in 1802 my 4 x gr grandfather Benjamin SHILLITO was appointed "Lockkeeper and Receiver of the dues". He was granted a salary of 50 guineas per annum and a house to live in by the Barnsley Canal Navigation Company. Benjamin's lock was at Agbrigg and he maintained this position until his death in 1820. Does anyone have any history on this particular lock or be able to advise me where I could write for more info. Thank you, Marg Mission, B.C., Canada

Does anyone know if I am likely to be able to obtain any information, or better still a picture of 'Browns Field Wharf' on the Rochdale canal in Manchester. My GGG-Grandfather, William Henry BROWNE ran a coal business there around 1834 and I would like to find out more about him. Any pointers gratefully received. Cheers, Geoff Browne.

    2. David Thomas
    3. My grandfather (David THOMAS b. 1848, Manchester) and two ggf. (Samuel THOMAS and Samuel EVANS ) were boatmen. I have still to confirm the date and birthplace of Samuel THOMAS, but it is likely he was born in Ashton-under-Lyne in 1802. In the mid to late 1800s both David and Samuel lived near the junction of the Rochdale and Ashton canals, Manchester. I did not know my gf. as he died the year after I was born. At that time he was living at Woodhouses, Failsworth, Manchester. From what I learned from my father, before my gf.retired, he was managing the Hollinwood branch of the Aston canal. It would appear that both Samuel and David THOMAS were working day boats in and out of Manchester. Samuel EVANS in the late 1880's was living within walking distance of the Hollinwood basin of the Ashton canal. I have not been able (as yet) to confirm his birth date in 1825 or that he was born in Knutsford - the place he gave in the 1881Census.Knutsford seems a long way (walking distance) from any canal system. If anyone has access to any canal company records, would they be good enough to check where these men may have worked. Thank you David Thomas, Toowoomba, Australia

    2. Gill Foster
    3. Dear All I am back from holiday. I have made the request below with no success but perhaps I will have better luck this time! I am researching religious missions to canal boatmen in the 19th and 20th centuries. A colleague and I have quite a lot of information but would welcome more on the subject Also if anyone could tell us the whereabouts of any copies of The Waterman from 1948 onwards, we would be deeply grateful. We can access them from 1894 to 1947 but want to know more about the last days of the magazine and the society. The Waterman was published by the Seamen and Boatmen's Friend Society, formed in 1850 and now defunct. The magazine was distributed amongst boatmen as well as to mission supporters and we are hoping that some copies may have survived. Gill

    3. Andrew Riding <[email protected]> asks [major snip] > I am completely confused as to how a man born in Selby into a sailing family could end up in Dewsbury as a clothier. It would seem that the only link between the two places is the canal. < While not impossible it is more likely (unless you have very solid evidence to the contary) that they are different people. So many people get muddled over different people with the same name that earlier this month I posted some horror stories on "Genealogy in Hertfordshire" under the heading "Right Name, Wrong Body". One example was of a hamlet of about 400 people where there were (over a relatively short time scale three men called George Seabrook who, between them, were married to four women called Sarah.) There were also some other George Seabrookes living within a mile or two who (as far as I know) never married a Sarah. At the period you are talking about (late 18th/early 19th century) many people were associated with chapels whose records have not survived - so there are no records available recording the births of children. It is very easy, in such cases, for an amateur family historian to look for the name in the IGI and assume than there is a link on the basis of the name alone - and generate a totally spurious ancestry. Chris Reynolds <[email protected]> If you want to know more about your Hertfordshire ancestors visit "Genealogy in Hertfordshire" at http://www.hertfordshire-genealogy.co.uk where many of the enquiries are quickly answered.

    1. [CANAL-PEOPLE] James Riding
    2. tray1
    3. Hello Everyone I have hit something of a brick wall in my research and am hoping that SKS can help me at least take one or two of these bricks down. I am searching for the origins of my 4XGGrandfather James RIDING. James was a clothier who lived and died in Dewsbury, West Riding of Yorkshire. James married Hannah NEWSOME on 7th November, 1814 at Dewsbury and died and was buried there in 1827 aged 34.At his marriage the parish register described him as "of this parish" but there are absolutely no other clues as to his origins at all before this point in time. I have done extensive research over the years and have found two possibilities for my James. The first is a Jemmy RIDING born in Keighley in 1792 and the other is James Riding born in Selby in 1792. James and Hannah had two sons, both of whom they called Joseph (obviously, one died young). As Hannahs father was called Benjamin, I am assuming that James father was called Joseph, this fits the Selby possibility perfectly. This is where your experience of the canals (especially the Aire and Calder) maybe able to help me. The Selby James father was a sailor who obviously ! lived and worked out of Selby. I would like to know the following: a/ Was a sailor then the same as a sailor today, i.e. would they be limited to working on the high-seas or would they venture onto the inland waterways. b/How likely would it be that a sailor who reached late middle age would transfer from working the high-seas to working the inland waterways. c/More specifically, has anyone any knowledge of a Joseph RIDING working the Aire and Calder, or any other canal around 1800 - 1810. I am completely confused as to how a man born in Selby into a sailing family could end up in Dewsbury as a clothier. It would seem that the only link between the two places is the canal. Any help on this matter or anything related to sea and canal trade in and out of Selby around 1800 would be most gratefully received. Best regards Andrew Riding
