    1. [CANAL-PEOPLE] CANAL-PEOPLE-D Digest V00 #45
    2. I have ALLENs from Ipstones near the beginning of the Cauldon Canal. Thomas ALLEN was some type of furnace man for ironworks. I am trying to find out if any of his sons were boatmen. Their names were: James b. abt. 1848: John b. abt. 1856; and Alfred b. abt. 1861. Thanks Laura Bradley Groton Connecticut USA

    2. Tony, I am interested in the information you have on GRIFFITHS, William. 46. Wednesbury. Should you see any boatmen my the names of ALLEN, COX, ROBERTS, DALE, or COOKE, I would be most happy to receive it or the source. Should I encounter any reference to your Calloways or Ayers/Ayars I shall let you know. Thank you. Laura Bradley Groton Connecticut USA

    3. Canal Boats had to be registerd with the company that owned the canals along which they wanted to travel and each boat would need to be gauged by the canal owner or his agent. There is no central location for any of these registers. I suppose legally they all belong to British Waterways but you will find them in County record Offices, small town libraries and Local History Centres and also in private hands. for the Black Country you could try Sandwell Libary & Local Studies Centre, Wolverhampton Archives ( the one in Snow Hill), and I know there are some at Walsall as I have seen such. 3. Hello All, This is my first posting to your list. I had been wondering if there was such a list, but after watching 'Bloodties' on BBC2 last week, I decided to join your ranks. My great grandfather Barnabas BEAUMONT was, according to the 1851 census for Tipton, Staffs., a Boatman, aged 20, born in Madeley. (The 1881 census confirms this was the Shropshire Madeley). On the same census, his brother Philip, aged 12 was also a Boatman, born in Tipton. On the 1861 census for Tipton, Barnabas was still a Boatman, but had left the Waterways by the 1871 census. We know from my grandmothers Wedding Cert. ( being married in Scotland, there is more info. on their Certs.) that Barnabas married Elizabeth HOLDEN from West Bromwich. I have looked in the GRO marriage indexes for the marriage of Barnabas and Elizabeth but could only find reference to Barnabas and could not find an Elizabeth HOLDEN to match. Has anyone seen any reference to Barnabas elsewhere? Family oral tradition suggests that he may have been a bit too partial to alcohol, and relinquished his living on the Waterways. On the TV programme there was shown a 'Register of Canal Boats' and also a 'Guage Register'. Can anyone say where these are held, and are they accessible to researchers? Any information will be appreciated. Regards, Gil. Hall. March 1840. The fathers are shown on the certificate as William Disley , boatman and James Fazakerley, boatman. The witnesses were James Disley and George Wignall. We also know that William and Jane had at least two children, my great grandfather Thomas born 19th. December 1844 and James born 1st. February 1842 I would love to find out if there were any more children besides these two and also when and where William and Jane died. Also would William be likely to own his own boat or work for the L&L canal company or some other carrying company and would he be likely to own a cottage ashore because we know that the Disleys had relations living at Lathom. > > > > Regards to all, > Roy Pennington. >

I am curious if they worked together or in close proximity. If someone can tell me where I might look for this information, that would be better. Thank you. Laura Bradley Groton Connecticut USA

    3. Hi Marg, Barnsley Canal was one of the 'residue' canals when the canals were nationalised years ago, which meant it was abandoned, so perhaps British Waterways will not be able to help. Much of it disappeared...was filled in...etc. There is a canal society now which is intent on restoring the canal (with some changes in route where the old route was built over) and its adjoining canal, the Dove and Dearn. They would know a lot of the canals history, I imagine. I have had a look at the Barnsley web pages, but can't find any reference to the canal. You might find that one of the following will give you an address. The Barnsley Canal Society has no web site of its own. http://www.waterways.org.uk/iwa/ http://community-1.webtv.net/NeptuneGrpLLC/CANALSINLAND/ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marg Cambridge" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, March 04, 2000 2:22 AM Subject: Re: [CANAL-PEOPLE] Agbrigg > Hi, I am new to this list.
