    2. Charles and Sian Jennings
    3. I am new to the list and re-sending my surname interests which did not appear to get through via digest mode yesterday William BROMAGE (b. 1850, Leicester) and his brother Charles BROMAGE (b.1853, Leicester) ran their own barge or barges mainly along the Oxford canal. Their father William BROMAGE, also a bargeman, was born in Warwick in the 1820s, and I have always been told that the family originates from there. William BROMAGE (the younger) married Sarah SHILCOCK at Holy Trinity Coventry in 1873. Sarah's father William SHILCOCK (b. 1829, Leicester) was also a barge boatman. The Shilcocks seem to have been based around Bedworth. William and Sarah BROMAGE had 13 children, and their youngest son Arthur (b. 1892) was my grandfather. In later years the Bromage family settled in Coventry and the children went into different occupations. Also researching GETTINGS/GITTINGS in Bedworth/Walsgrave, near Coventry, and HAROLD and variants in Warwick. I do not know if they were canal families but they married into the BROMAGE and SHILCOCK families above. Please contact me if you recognise anyone! Sian Jennings [email protected]

    3. In my previous posting to the list, I omitted to mention that John Killcross and the Swift would be in Cheshire around Runcorn. He and Ellen were married near Winwick. I think the cargo would have been salt. Elizabeth Wright <[email protected]>

    3. Hi Eilleen What sort of date was your William? I've not delved too deeply into Tewkesbury's registers as yet, and so far, at least, haven't come across a Richard & Elizabeth, but I (I'd got as far as this last night before the little bell on the oven pinged, and I went downstairs to eat - and then slept... On logging-on this morning, to my total bemusement, I found the following in my inbox: "Looking at Daniel [ALLEN -my Other Correspondent's Ancestor]'s parents and siblings I wondered if Richard may be Joseph's brother. Well acc to the IGi Joseph and Mary Allen had: William 1765 Thomas 1766 Joseph 1768 William 1770 Jane 1773 Robert 1776 Molly 1778 Richard 1780 John 1783 Richard married Elizabeth Milton - does that name ring a bell on 5 March 1804 at Tewkesbury. So it looks as if it is poss that two brothers married two sisters." So it looks as if a trip to Gloucester to delve deep is called for! Will go Today... I'm afraid this is Very Disjointed - but it looks very much as if there IS a link after all. I'll try to Get Organised, and then get back to you when in a state of real coherence! Cheers, Gus Tysoe Droitwich (not a million miles from Tewkesbury where my line of TYSOEs stayed for their statutory 50 years before changing counties again...) -----Original Message----- From: Eilleen Ovenden <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: 13 March 2000 10:51 Subject: [CANAL-PEOPLE] Re: Allens >Hi Gus >Saw your note about your Allens from Tewkesbury. 1. [CANAL-PEOPLE] JOHN KILLCROSS - THE FLAT "SWIFT"
    2. John And Elizabeth Wright
    3. Hi everyone, I'm new to the list and was wondering if anyone has come across the SWIFT or its Captain John Killcross. John Killcross married Ellen Flitcroft in Dec. 1822 and this was listed as his occupation in the parish record of his marriage and the birth of his daughter Mary. It also seems to have been his residence. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Elizabeth Wright <[email protected]>

    1. [CANAL-PEOPLE] Oxford Canal Company
    2. Mrs Julie Goucher
    3. The following was originally posted to the Oxfordshire list and is posted here with the permission of the original writer. Paul Betteridge of the Oxfordshire list wrote: The company was authorized by Act of Parliament in 1769. The canal ran from near Coventry to Oxford. It joined the Coventry Canal at Longford junction. While construction in the northern section went reasonably well, the canal was only constructed as far as Banbury when the original money ran out and the pressures of the American War of Independence made things difficult. The section from Banbury to Oxford was opened on 1st January 1790. Coal was a (the?) major cargo of the canal. The canal is still there, but only used for pleasure now. The basin in Oxford has been filled in. Stephanie (of the Oxfordshire list, JG) sent this link (to the British Waterways site) to the list earlier this year: http://www.britishwaterways.co.uk/ There is a page on the Oxford canal: http://www.britishwaterways.co.uk/default.asp?B43inter and you can get at more detailed maps of the canal by following the links. You will certainly want to look through the list archives for other messages about the canal: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl (plain search) http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ (threaded archives) Hope you find this of use Regards Julie Goucher [email protected]

    2. Hello Gus, I do not think my Thomas ALLEN is your man. He was born in Ipstones in 1823, son of John ALLEN and Sarah WARDLE. Laura Bradley Groton Connecticut USA Answer to: Hello Laura, My Boatmen ALLENs started off at Tewkesbury, on the River Severn, halfway between Worcester & Gloucester - but they were Wide-Beam folk by and large. However, I've a 'missing' Thomas, born 1816 at Tewkesbury - and while I doubt very much if he's 'yours', it's worth a try? If ever you get over here, try for a trip on the Caldon - it's one of the most beautiful canals I know. (Despite doing it in rain - and snow - and with Insufficient rations!)
