    3. Hello, I'm a new subscriber posting my interests. They are the TREEVES family of Ealing/Brentford. In the 1881 census they were living in Distillery Road, Ealing but the whole family give their place of birth as Brentford, Middlesex. They are: Louisa (widow), 40, Punnet maker Thomas, 22, labourer Eliza, 17, punnet maker Abraham, 14, scholar John, 12, scholar Arthur, 8, scholar Another TREEVES, whom I suspect to be an elder son is living further up the same road. An elderly relative tells of these being connected to the barge folk in some way but is a trifle vague as to how and where. Any info gratefully received, and of course happy to cross-refer. Regards, Mike Doyle Kent, UK

    2. Phil, I am holding my breath here! Now the connection I have (not sure what it is yet), my great grand mother, Mary Ann Millward (nee Owen) had her first son, George in 1853 at Lower Green, Tipton. He only lived 10 days and on his death certificate the informant of the death was a Mary Ann Bridges of Lower Green, Tipton. Trying to find her on the 1851 census I found her at Alpha Terrace, Upper Green, Tipton with Nancy Bridges, widow aged 85. Her occupation was pauper boatwoman, born in Oldbury, Worcestershire. Her relationship looks like grand daughter. At 207 Upper Green there is Alfred Bridges, wife Mary and their family, Harriet, John, Mary Ann and Alfred. Two Bridges, Alice and John pop up again on the 1871 census for Birmingham. She is aged 19 and he is aged 16, both born in Tipton and his occupation is boatman. I am not sure of the relationship, but it looked like Sister in Law and brother in law. In Mary Ann Millward's will dated 1902 she lbequeaths to her neice, Rose Ann Bridges her sewing machine. Apart from these odd sightings, I have not been able to connect to any other Bridges. Mary Ann Millward was born in Coventry. Her father's name was George Owen and he was a Farrier. Have not confirmed her mother's name. That's it, that's all I know. Look forward to hearing from you. 3. Dear Alan Looking back through old messages, I noticed your name. I have just come across a Phillis Ellen Hale of Allen's Engine, babtised on 3 November 1901 on the Floating Church in Holme Parish. This lady was on a list in a small book called The Fenland Ark by John Bennett. Emily Allen, harmonium player, is also mentioned.Let me know if you want to know more about the book. Possibly this is a red herring but perhaps not! 1. Re: [CANAL-PEOPLE] Pennsylvania Canal People
    2. I have two canal interests. I believe Owen Ryan was working on building the Delaware and Chesapeake canal in 1825 when my great-great-grandfather John Joseph Ryan was born in MD. John later moved to Berks County, PA and was a boatman on the Schuylkill Canal in Douglassville, PA. Many of the Irish boatman in this area are buried in the St. Paul's Mission Church cemetery in Douglassville and I do have a listing of some of the burials there. Anyone out there have any information on my Ryans? Colleen Ryan Beener

    1. [CANAL-PEOPLE] Pennsylvania Canal People
    2. Greetings canal people, I haven't seen many posts about U.S. canal people so let me see if I can make some connections with this community. Delaware and Lehigh Canal - I have paternal g-g-grandfather, George Fretz Wagner, who worked on this canal for several years beginning in about 1854. Earlier he had been a farmer, school teacher, and "practical surveyor," and Clerk of the Oprhan's Court--all in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Schulykill Canal - I have a maternal g-g-grandfather, Valentine Frey, who worked on this canal for his entire life after emigrating to U.S. with his parents in about 1833. His father Jacob and older brother George were farmers, Valentine and his younger brother Jacob were boatmen. Valentine's canal boat was the Jeremiah Lutz. In the 1890 Schuylkill County Census Directory Valentine is shown living on Dock Street in Schuylkill Haven, PA with his 2nd wife Amelia and a daughter Emaline, a milliner. Anybody interested in these 2 canals and the families who work on them? Scott Wagner in Newport News, VA USA

    2. David Element
    3. I am trying to find out anything about a man by the name of William DAY who was described as a boatman on his daughters marriage certificate. She married (for the second time) in 1859 at the age of 32/33 and according to the 1861 census was born in Northfield, Worcs. I believe that this is the Northfield that is now under the Birmingham heading. I am interested in this man because he would have been my gggg-grandfather! I have been unable to locate any details from the IGI for the birth, christening or initial marriage of his daughter Sarah DAY and am hence currently hitting a brick wall. Any information about any William DAY who could potentially have been father to Sarah would be appreciated. Thank you in anticipation of any information offered. 1. Re: [CANAL-PEOPLE] Re: DALE
    2. Hi Eric, Not sure about the sharing. I would just LOVE to get a connection somewhere with my Millward. This is my Dad's side of the family and we are no further forward now than we was 20 years ago apart from the fact that during that time I have filled in some of the blanks. Firstly, I have no ideas as to where my Millwards came from. According to our family bible Robert Millward was born in 1826 in Worcester. No trace of his baptism in the Worcester records. He next pops up in 1852 when he marries Mary Ann Owen, who was born in Coventry. They were married at Wolverhampton and on the marriage certificate his father's name is John and his and Robert's occupations were given as Boatmen. They do not show up on the census for the address given, which was Horsley Fields, Wolverhampton, not have I found them anywhere else. After that I can keep track of them. Their first child was born and died at Tipton. They moved back to Wolverhampton, then to Wem, Shropshire, back to Wolverhampton and on to Birmingham. All this has concisely written in the family bible, but where did Robert come from? I have tried various avenues, down the Severn, Birmingham, around Tipton, but as yet have not tracked him down. There seems to be some connection with a family called Bridges at Tipton, who were also boat people, but quite what it is I have not worked out as yet. So have you a Robert lurking in your tree with a father called John? If I ever find a connection with anybody I think I will jump for joy!
