Hi! The Big Question is WHEN? I'm chasing two quite unconnected ALLEN families in the UK - one lot were Watermen on the Severn River and the Wide Canals, roughly 1820-1890, while the others built boats for for our Narrow Canals from around 1880-1995. There are more than a few from Both Trees who 'just disappeared' - quite possibly to Your Neck of the Woods... But none of those I've so far found had "I" to start their first names - or their mothers, come to that. My ancestor owned a boat on the Erie Canal around Oswego and Oneida Counties. It was called the I.ALLEN. Does anyone have any idea where I can get information on this? Thanks [email protected]
Hello all! I found the following while searching Rootsweb.com in the Wayne County, Pennsylvania Forum: Died Under Suspicious Circumstances Posted by RICHARD J. KANE <mailto:[email protected]> <[email protected]> on Mon, 28 Jun 1999 Surname: Kane Does anyone have any information regarding a suspicious death on the Delaware & Hudson Canal in Honesdale, Pa around April, 1861? Something that might be in some of your own ancestors' records. The name of the victim was John Kane. ~The Kanes of N.E. Pennsylvania <http://www.monmouth.com/rjkane/index.html> . I was especially interested because oral history in my family told of a Simon O'Kane or O'Cain who worked on "the canal" and was involved in a murder. The family name was subsequently changed to "Kane." I have not been able to reach the author of the query, so I have no other details. Moreover, in researching my family tree, I can find no trace of a Simon at all. I'd be interested in hearing any details of this incident or anything that might relate to "Simon!" The Kanes eventually settled in Elmira, NY, where "Simon's" grandson, Thomas F. Kane (born 1892), was a conductor on the DL&W railroad. They say his parents were Michael Kane and Hanna Ryan. The Kanes were a poor Irish family that lived on the edge--it's very difficult to find out anything! Plus, I'm located in Nebraska and do not have access to records! Please help! Thanks! E. Kane Bugs
Hi List I am a new subscriber to the Canal People list. I have Hannah NEVITT marrying Joseph HEWITT in 1848 in Grantham. On their marriage certificate both gave their occupations as Boatman. Hannah's father Joseph NEVITT was a Beer Seller at the Hand & Heart in Wharf Road Grantham. Can SKS give me any advice on how to track this couple down. I have not found them in the 1881 census although Hannah would have been about 60. She had a son Joseph Lyne NEVITT who was born in 1844; his father was Joseph LYNE, a grocer. Hannah did not marry the boy's father. Regards Colin West Sussex
Hi all, I will be visiting my old hometown (Northwich) & environs this October & would like to go to the Ellesmere Port Museum, Is it open in October? I know this is the off season, that is why I will be home then. ;-) Does the museum have a website? Cheers, Jim Thompson.
Dear Kate I tried to send this off line but it didn't get through. I am also researching this family for my cousin Sarah Ann Brown known as Peggy she is the daughter of Richard Humphries and Sarah Ann Stokes. Sarah Ann Stokes was the daughter of James Stokes and Olive Cutler, I have a birth date for Olive Cutler 12/09/1858 daughter of William Cutler and Sarah Ann Dudley I have not confirmed this with a birth certificate it is an entry in a bible belonging to Peggy. I also have a copy of the 1871 census for Bugbrooke Northants Vessels on the Canal. Does anyone know a list of passengers on the canals? Or for that matter also employees? I am trying to locate my g grandfather Levi B. WOOD who supposedly came to IN from NY via rivers and canals. Any info greatly appreciated. Ruth
In 1816 & 1820 Joseph and Mary Holroyd had their two sons Abraham and Joseph christened at Mirfield Parish church.Joseph Snr was my mothers G.G.G.Grandfather and was a boatman. I would like to hear from anyone who has information regarding where he worked and if they are researching the same name. Arthur Turner, in hot sticky Holbeach. Lincs
I am trying to trace a marriage between James Stokes and an Olive (either Slater or Cutler) around 1886ish. Olive Stokes was my Great Grandmother and before she married James Stokes she was married to a ? Slater and had one son, Samuel. She had six children with James Stokes, the youngest being my Grandfather, Arthur Stokes. On his birth certificate, however, her former name was shown as Cutler and not Slater as I had supposed. I have searched the St Catherine's indexes to no avail. I have found them on the 1891 census at Worcester Wharf, Birmingham. This shows Samuel to be aged 7, James aged 4 and Edward aged 2. (This is how I come to be looking around 1886 for the marriage) I am stuck for ideas here - can anyone suggest anyhting that might help? I am unable to go any further until I have resolved this puzzle. Many thanks, Kate Best
