Pat Good Evening please could you tell me where you managed to find this register and do you think there would be one for Leeds or Skipton? Can SKS let me have the address or who to contact at the Huddersfield Canal Society, Arthur Turner, in Holbeach,Lincs;
Hi Listers, I'm new to the list and wondered if any one could help. My DORSETT half of the family were Canal People. I have the following: William DORSETT married to Emily SANSOM George DORSETT born 1876, Dorset married to Mary Ann LANGTHORN born 1883, Hayes, Middlesex, married 1898, Paddington Basin (she was only 15!) had 13 children, some of whom were: Alice, Minnie, Jack, Mark Edward (born 3 November 1901, Langley, Bucks, died same year) and my Grandfather Albert DORSETT. The problem I have is that Grandad always said he was born on 6th November 1902 at Langley, Bucks on a barge called the 'Dottie'. We have never found his birth certificate, nor does Langley, Bucks have any record of him. To make matters worse, as you can see above, a brother was born 1 year and 3 days earlier in exactly the same place, but this cannot be Grandad as the child died in the same year. Unfortunately Grandad passed away in 1990 and, since I only started my genealogy in October 1999, I cannot ask him if he can remembered being included in any census. If anyone knows this family or can tell me where I can find a record of them (ie Census), I would be most grateful if you could contact me. It is a family mystery that haunts us. I would dearly love to find Grandad's birth certificate to give to my Mother. She is the only surviving member of her family now. I would be interested too, in the families of my Grandad's siblings. Names of Barges: Dottie, Wagtail, Polly Thanks. Paulette (Basham) Thompson
Hello All! I am intruding on this list in the hopes that some knowledgeable person will help/advise me. George DAY (b. about 1814 in Stratton St. Margaret, Wiltshire), was described as a waterman (in his son's marriage registration) and as a canal labourer. I have found George in Stratton St. Margaret in the 1851 and 1861 censuses, and have also found him (I THINK) in Swindon in 1871 and 1881. There are some confusing factors in the censuses so either they don't all relate to the same George, or George married three times, or the census taker made some mistakes. I am really keen to understand what I have. I am interested to know what George's job would have entailed and on what canal he would have worked. I would also like to know if there was a union or other body to which he might have belonged and, if so, if records of the organization are available? Or, if there are any other records, other than the parish records, which would throw some light on George and his family. I'd be very grateful for any information or directions. Thank you. Census entries. 1851 - Stratton St. Margaret - Canal Side George DAY, b. STRATTON, aged 37 Wife: Mary, b. STANTON or MARSTON (SOUTH), aged 32 Several children 1861 - Stratton St. Margaret: - Canal Side George DAY, b. LONDON, aged 46 - canal labourer Wife: Sarah, b. STRATTON, aged 51 Several children - same as younger children listed in 1851 census (older ones presumably left home) 1871 - Swindon - 24 Fleet Street: George DAY, b. STRATTON, aged 56 - labourer Wife: Sarah, b. LONDON, aged 60 - tailoress No children at home 1881 - Swindon - 3 Regent Street: George DAY, b. STRATTON, aged 64 - labourer Wife: Mary Ann, b. PURTON, aged 65 No children at home Vivienne Toronto, Canada

Hello listers, I'm re-submitting this in the hope that it will bring more information. Thanks to Norman for sending me data. As a newcomer to this list, I would be more than pleased if any of you were able to supply info. about the following boatmen/women who were active on various canals in the North-West and other areas of England: JOHN BAILEY b. 1825 (active on the Sankey Cut in 1859) DAVID BAILEY b. 1859 at Winwick Quay (active on the Manchester, Bolton & Bury late 1800s) JOSEPH BAILEY b. 18?? Hi Peter It is only a chance, but a rewarding one if successful. The PRO Kew holds both maritime and railway records. The later took over the canals and there could be pages of stuff. Some of it is a treasurehouse. Try www.pro.gov.uk Good luck Ernie Bull Bristol, UK. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Boden" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, July 28, 2000 12:48 PM Subject: [CANAL-PEOPLE] Rochdale Canal (1900s') > Can you refer me to any source of information about the boats and times of > the canal. John Harrison was born in Ireland around 1814 and worked on the Erie Canal in the 1830s and/or 40s. He married Eliza (Elizabeth) Lindsay and family legend says he worked for her father on the canal. She was from County Armagh, Ireland and her parents were probably George and Mary Lindsay. They all lived in Oneida Co., NY. Any information on these people would be appreciated. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
Did anyone on the list have STOPFORTH or ABRAM family on the British Inland Waterways? An aunt of mine in England has recently visited graveyards for me in search of my great grandparents's grave. She found them in Newburgh Lancashire. Our family worked on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal for generations. It appears my great grandparents Thomas RUDDOCK and Ellen (neé HESKETH) are buried in the grave of: MARTHA STOPFORTH d. 1906 aged 72 wife of EDWARD STOPFORTH. I'm trying to work out the relationship. I have a canal people marriage of a possible son for Edward and Martha: Thomas STOPFORTH married Margaret ABRAM in 1895 And also from the 1881 census an Abram living with Heskeths: Dwelling: Newburgh Census Place: Lathom, Lancashire, England Source: FHL Film 1341899 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 3756 Folio 58 Page 5 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Martha HESKETH U 18 F Newburgh, Lancashire, England Rel: Head Margaret HESKETH 9 F Newburgh, Lancashire, England Rel: Sister Occ: Scholar Robert HESKETH 7 M Newburgh, Lancashire, England Rel: Brother Occ: Scholar Elizabeth HESKETH 5 F Newburgh, Lancashire, England Rel: Sister Occ: Scholar Margery ABRAM U 50 F Newburgh, Lancashire, England Rel: Aunt Occ: Dressmaker Would anyone with possible connections or suggestions please contact me. Hi everyone on the canal list! An aunt of mine in England has recently visited graveyards for me in search of our CHEETHAM relatives who were all boatmen on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.
