This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Livingston Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/7aB.2ACEAE/4936 Message Board Post: I'm hoping someone more familiar with Canadian records than I am will have a suggestion or idea of how I can get past this brick wall I hit My great grandfather was James Naismith Livingston, born in Ontario. Per his death certificate from here in WA state he was born 4/25/1874. But the death certificate doesn't provide his parents names. I have a copy of his obituary as well, which also doesnt provide that info, only that he had several brothers and sisters in Canada According to the website www.familysearch.org there is a record of a James Livingston(e) with the same date of birth and death (12/24/1937) being born in Frontenac County I have a copy of his marriage certificate which only verifies his mother's maiden name as "Naismith". Father's name is listed as "Gro Livingston". We're assuming it means George, we hope However I've been thru the Ancestry.ca website and viewed the line birth registers, census records, death records and all that. There is no record so far of any James Livingston with that date of birth with a mother's maiden name is Naismith There is a George Livingston and a Louisa Naismith who married in 1872 and has a son James in April 1873 only to have his mother pass away late that same month. My sister is requesting the films necessary for viewing the birth registrations thru her local LDS Family History Center and I've written a couple of letters to family members to see if any information was passed down But other than that, I'm at a loss as to what I can do. If his birth wasn't listed online in the Canadian birth records, it wouldn't be on the microfilms either would it? It's my understand and hopefully someone here can correct if I'm wrong but registering your child's birth was a relatively new thing to be done back in 1873-1874, so it may not have been registered Are the birth registrations the only birth records available in Canada? Or is there some other type I should be looking for? Any suggestions or ideas are very much appreciated. Thanks, Suzanne
