My father was Samuel Gilbank (1916-1975) b Rudston, East Yorkshire, Grandfather George Gilbank (1879-1972) b Wetwang, Great-grandfather Samuel Gilbank (1859-1945) b Wetwang. Great-great-grandfather Seth Gilbank b 1836 Wetwang. Great-great-great-grandfather John Gilbank b 1804 Sherrif Hutton/Lilling Green, North Yorkshire d 1885 Wetwang. John Gilbank was married and living in Wetwang from the 1820s onwards, he worked throughout his life as a farm labourer, as did his son, Seth. Samuel (1859-45) lived at Wetwang all his life and was a shepherd, while my grandfather, George, was a farm labourer then foreman in various nearby villages, before buying a farm at Pocklington, East Yorkshire, with my father and uncle. I have not been looking into my roots for long, but it looks as though John Gilbank had at least five sons. Three, Mark (b1828), John (b1831) and Thomas (b1838) all appear to have emigrated across the Atlantic and started a dynasty on the American continent; while Seth and Samuel lived all their lives in Wetwang. Several Gilbanks are buried in Wetwang churchyard. I can find no record of any other Gilbank family, so any Gillbank that originates from Wetwang in the 19th century almost certainly descends from John Gilbank. I live with my family (including a son called John) in Pocklington, which is about 15 miles from Wetwang. I would be happy to swap any details about the family, or if you have any other trans-Atlantic 'Wetwang Gilbank' contacts I would be grateful to receive them.
