    1. [CGW] Re: Dit surnames
    2. Charlotte County NB
    3. Hi Kristin, Re your brick wall on JOSEPH GAREAU dit SAINTONGE. The dit surnames can send you off in different directions, Boismenu - Monet St-Onge - Aubé, Baril, Boisson, Joly, Martineau, Ménard I found a website on "dit" surnames, but can't remember where...here's a small exerpt from the article. "Dit" Names One thing that can make it difficult to find your ancestor is that he may have been using a different surname from the one that you expect. You will need to make yourself aware of any "dit" names that might be associated with the surname you're tracing, and if you can't find someone under the name of his child, you may find him under the dit name. "Dit" in French means "say" and in this context, it means "called." In other words, a person might be Pierre Bourbeau dit Lacourse, which means that he had an ancestor named Bourbeau, but he chooses to use the name Lacourse instead. So he is Pierre Bourbeau called Lacourse. People might take a dit name to distinguish their family from another family of the same name living nearby. Often it was a sort of nickname, often picked up during service as a soldier. Or it might refer to the place in France where the family originated. Sometimes it was the mother's surname, and sometimes the father's first name was used, either instead of the surname (for example, Hebert dit Emmanuel) or in addition to it (Jeanbard, Castonquay). In any case, very often the dit name was passed down to later generations, either in place of the original surname, or in addition to it. Some of his children might then keep the original surname (e.g. Barbeau), and some might use the dit name (e.g. Lacourse). After a few generations, it's not uncommon to completely lose the memory of the original name, or to forget which was the original and which was the dit name. The best example of this is the Hudon dit Beaulieu family, where you will often find people listed as Beaulieu dit Hudon. You sometimes might find a name and its dit name hyphenated, as in François Hudon-Beaulieu. In fact, you can generally assume that a hyphenated surname (before 1950, anyway) is the surname plus dit name. Just remember that any Hudon might be the child of a Beaulieu and vice versa. Some surnames, such as Roy, have had several different dit names. You should be aware that usually a different dit name indicates a different family. For example, Siméon Roy dit Audy and Antoine Roy dit Desjardins were not related to each other. So it helps us to distinguish who's who among their descendants if the descendants use a dit name. Pierre Roy dit Audy will be a descendant of Siméon, and François Roy dit Desjardins will be a descendant of Antoine. If you find a source which tells you, for example, that Pierre Audy is François Desjardins' father, you should be very suspicious. Hope this helps some. Marilyn

    1. [CGW] Esler, from Co Antrim Ireland, all provinces mi 1800s.
    2. Brian Webb
    3. The surname Esler according to the records from Ireland, Griffith's, reveals 60 households of that name in the whole of Ireland in 1840-60 and 56 of those were in Co Antrim. My dilemma is that Grt Grt Grandfather Robert married in Australia, came out in the 1852-3 era chasing gold, married in 1866, giving his parents names William and Mary Ann (nee Black), from Co Antrim. No other reference -Town/Barony/Parish etc. found. Believe there are relatives in Canada, one having been a Doctor. Brian Webb

    1. [CGW] JOSEPH GAREAU UNKNOWN BIRTH INFORMATION CIR 1823/25
    2. Kristin
    3. Hi listers, I have a huge brick wall with my JOSEPH GAREAU dit SAINTONGE. I do not have any parental, birth or marriage information on this Joseph. I do know that he was married from the baptismal records of his 8 children states it, hopefully he was truthful. All I have on Joseph is really his name, and the possibility that his middle name may have been Louis, this taken from the records of the children. [The name Louis is used on his burial record in Ogdensburg NY.] On these records there is not one Gareau relation as a Godparent listed. Louise's family is used a couple of times. I cannot find their marriage which I "think" must take place prior to the Feb 1846 birth of their first child Delphine in Curran, Prescott Co Ontario. Their marriage is not found there. He married a LOUISE MONETTE dit BOISMENU. Louise was b/b/ 20/21/9-1815 St Benoit, Deux Montagnes daughter of JEAN BAPTISTE MONETTE dit BOISMENU and MARGUERITE LAUZON. I have her full family line, and really need to find a marriage for them . Their marriage does not seem to be found there either. The Gareau and Monette can also be found in St Jerome, Terrebonne for 4 children, Curran for another child, St Andre Avellin for two more children. These children are after the 1846 birth of their daughter, and with the help of many other wonderful people the marriage does not seem to take place in any of these places either. They migrate to Ogdensburg St Lawrence Co NY for their final years Joseph in 1887 and Louise 1894. I am a member of the Gareau Family Association and so far Jean Gareau the Pres has not been able to help me find them either. If anyone can advise me on other ways to find this marriage or birth I would appreciate it tremendously. Sincerely, Kristin DeCare

    3. Hi, Anyone on this list know of any researchers for hire in Quebec City. I've been able to trace my Power(s) family Patrick Power(s) & Mary Ann(O'Neil) Power(s) famine Irish from 1846 - 1872. Patrick & Mary were married in 1848 in Quebec City their first child Michael E.Power(s) (my gr-grand father) was born in Quebec City in 1849, he came to the states in 1869. Along with his brother William R. in 1872. I lose Patrick in 1871 after Mary his wife dies in Quebec City. Around 1872 he marries Julie Buckingham in Quebec, no trace after this, mainly because I do not know where to look from here.. Patrick's parents were Michael Power(s) & Honoria Hassett , all from Ireland except children Mary's parents were Owen O'Neil & Margaret Moran, I'm assuming from Ireland. Do not know what counties for either family. Thanks, Norm Hamilton Lancaster,NY
