    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/7aB.2ACEAE/701.1.1.1.3 Message Board Post: Just happened to read your posting on Jacques Énaud-dit-Canada and some of his descendents. He happens to be my direct ancestor, and I'm always interested in new findings. My gr-grandfather, Joachim Narcisse Hénault-dit-Fresnière married Justine Éthier-dit-Dragon (real name: Quay-dit-Éthier) (Jean-Baptiste and Marie Josephte Bombardier-dit-Lombarde) in St-Valentin 1834-10-14. Joachim Narcisse, born 1806-08-18 in Ste-Élisabeth, was the son of Antoine Hyppolite Hénault-dit-Fresnière (not Antoine Deschamps!) and Marie Judith Guibault. Your information on Jacques Énaud-dit-Canada as a soldier is correct. But Marie Leroux, from Rouen, Normandie, was one of the "fille du roy" (king's daughter) who came to Nouvelle-France to marry. No trace of the marriage record or marriage contract was found. But there is ample proof of Marie Leroux's status, which leads us to believe that the two were married in Nouvelle-France, possibly at the Fort St-Louys, in Chambly or in the Sorel region, where his regiment was stationed, and sometimes after her confirmation at Fort St-Louys on May 16,1668. As far as marriage dates, your information is mostly correct. But when it comes to the family names, I must correct you on those. I don't know where you found your information on the Hénault-dit-Canada-Fresnière using the "dit nom" Deschamps , but it needs a little clarification. The dit name Deschamps has never been used by my family and does not apply to the descendents of Jacques Énaud-dit-Canada (Énaud/Hénault/Eno families), but to the family and descendents of Toussaint Hunault and his wife Marie Lorgueuil. The dit names used by the descendents of Jacques Énaud were originally: Canada, Fresnière, Delorme and Portneuf. Again that information is also well documentated and easilly explained. It is important to use the "dit names" properly as they identify the families tied to these names. For instance, in the mid 1800's, the Hénault family members living in the Napierville and Chateauguay regions, mostly all from the Fresnière line, started marrying with members of the Hunault-dit-Deschamps line. It could be very confusing for the researchers if we started calling all these people Deschamps instead of using their proper family names and "dit nom" associated with each of them. Some are known to have dropped their family names: Hunault and Hénault, and went by their dit names only, such as Deschamps, Fresnière, Delorme and Portneuf. If not identified properly, someone can go looking for quite a while before finding out who's who. And what about the people starting their family genealogy? It can be very confusing at first, for anyone to start researching their family under the hundreds of different spellings found for any given name. Add to that the various "dit nom" used by each family, it's enough to discourage anyone, specially when they find out they have been researching the wrong lines for weeks on end...! This is not a criticism of your work, or anyone else's for that matter. But simply an issue that I feel needs to be addressed. In doing genealogy research, we need all the tools and all the help we can get, and looking up the wrong family tree is not one of them. Surnames: Ritchie, Thomson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/7aB.2ACEAE/917.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Hi Rob. I decided to do more research on my family. The IGI records at the LDS web site show that my ancestors might have been: William RITCHIE and Elizabeth "Betty" THOMSON who were married in Dundee, Angus, Scotland, in 1828. They had Elizabeth RITCHIE in 1837. So, there were probably other children in this family. I just placed a query on the RITCHIE List, and I will let you know if anyone provides more information on this family. I also found out that there were four William RITCHIE's born in Dundee, Angus, Scotland, right around 1800. The possible fathers were: David RITCHIE, William RITCHIE, and two John RITCHIE's.

Surnames: Ritchie, Hannah, Kerr Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/7aB.2ACEAE/917.1 Message Board Post: Hi Robert, The parents of my great-grandmother were William and Eliza (RITCHIE) HANNAH. Eliza was born in 1837 in Ireland, and her parents were reported to be Andrew and Eliza (?) RITCHIE. This is from my sister's research and is not verified. In addition, almost nothing is known about Andrew and Eliza; e.g., b~1800, m~1830, d~1860 in SCOTLAND. William HANNAH and Eliza RITCHIE married in Barony Parish, Scotland, in 1855. In the summer of 1857, with two baby girls in tow, they migrated to Boston, MA. As far as I know, they did come directly to Boston, with no stop in Canada. William and Eliza had more children while living in Everett, MA. Their daughter, Elizabeth HANNAH (b4/1857) married William KERR in Malden, MA, in 1876. William KERR was from an extended KERR / HENDERSON family which migrated from County Sligo, Ireland, to Argenteuil County, Quebec Province, Canada, ~1824. I do not know if Andrew and Eliza RITCHIE had other children in Scotland (or Ireland?), so I don't know if they had any RITCHIE grandchildren born there in the 1850's. I have seen the RITCHIE surname mentioned for NB and NS, Canada, but the name does not seem to be mentioned very often.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: LAUNDREE, LOUNDREE, PEASLEE, SHAFER, STEWART, FOSTER Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/7aB.2ACEAE/918 Message Board Post: I am stuck. I have been researching Joseph LAUNDREE for 2 years now. What I know is he was born in Apr 1820/1822 in "Upper Canada" (according to censuses). He immigrated to the USA (Polk County, Wisconsin) in 1855 also according to census info. He married Sophia (UNKNOWN), a Ojibwa girl, between 1855 and 1859. They had 3 children - Elizabeth b Jan 1860 in ST. Croix Falls, Polk, WI; Josophine born 18 Jul 1868, Apple RIver, Polk, WI; and Joseph C (my 2gt-grandfather) 14 Jan 1871 Balsam Lake, Polk, WI. Sophia died 4 Apr 1874 in Balsam Lake, Polk, WI. I have not been able to find any info on Sophia, although I have heard there was an obit. After Sophia's death, Julia C PEASLEE, a widow with 2 boys (Seth E b 1868 and Arthur b 1870) moved in with Joseph and his children. By 1880, they were all (except Elizabeth Loundree) living together in Apple River, Polk, WI. In 1882, Joseph and Julia married in Albion, Wright, Minnesota. I have no idea what happened to Julia, but ! in 1897 Joseph married Florence UNKNOWN in Albion, Wright, Minnesota. Florence was born in Switzerland in Oct 1824. I believe Joseph and Florence moved to Oregon between 1901-1903, with Joe Jr. Both daughters stayed in Wisconsin. Elizabeth LOUNDREE married Alfred FOSTER in 1879 in Polk Co, WI. Josephine married George STEWART in Turtle River, Barron, WI 1 Nov 1894. Joe Jr married Cornelia SHAFER in 1894 (probably in Albion, Wright, MN). Joe Jr and Cornelia's first son, Glenn C was born 9 Aug 1900 in Minnesota. Their 2nd son, Carl Dean was born 8 Nov 1904 in Sandy, Clackamas, Oregon. Joe Jr and family stayed in Sandy, OR (we're still here) but Joseph and Florence moved on south to Independence, Polk, Oregon. Joseph died 22 Jun 1910 in Independence. Florence died 7 Jan 1916 in Independence. I have Joseph's death certificate, a copy of his will and probate case, I have him on the 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1910 censuses. Now here are my questions: 1 - (duh!)Where did he come from? Who were his parents/siblings? How do I figure out where to look next? 2 - Who was Sophia? Where is she buried? Where is her obit? How do I research Native Americans? If anyone could give my a push in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.
