Hello: I am trying to find out info on the surname of GADIEN or GADIAN. My great grandfather's half sister was PHOEBE LANCTO/LANCTOT/LONCTO born in 1863 in NY. This only info I have is that she died in Massachusetts in April, 1893 at age 29 and is supposely buried in St. Michaels in Springfield, MA..under the name of GADIEN OR GADIAN. (This is a family plot various other members are buried there also and I received info from the cemetary office.) Now my dilema is also that I cant seem to find out if this is a French Canadain surname or what. Does anyone recognize this surname? I do not have any other info regarding when she got married or to who at this time? but I one thing at at time for now... thanks LFELIXTHEKAT

Hi, Try doing a search at http://www.canada411.com/eng/person.html . It is an online phone directory for Canada. Try doing a search with last name, first name initial and "all provinces". You may want to try a search for the parents as well if you think they may still be living. If you know where John and his wife were married, city, town, Church, they may have records with parents names. Try the army for records, parents name and information. Have you posted on the web site for Bamford on Rootsweb? Also read other posting. Another is Genealogy.com for posting messages on the Bamford name. Without parents or siblings names, the task is difficult and will take a bit longer but do not give up. Any papers, pictures, anything from your grandmother for clues? What did she do with his army papers? With all the Bamfords in Canada, USA and England, you have family out there and one name will start the ball rolling Ciao for now. Sandy

Unfortunately we have no names of parents or siblings for my grandfather, John Charles Bamford. After his death, my grandmother and his family severed all contact. My mother does not remember my grandmother ever mentioning a Bamford by their first name! We do know that John Charles was born in 1903, and my mother seems to think it was in Wisconsin. He served in the US Army during WWII, reaching the rank of Chief Warrent Officer at the time of his death (due to illness). He is buried in the Colorado National Cemetery. He had four or five siblings. My mother believes that his mother was still alive at the time of his death, but no one from his family came to the funeral. His family came to the US by way of Canada, but we don't know if it his parents or grandparents. Before that, the ancestors were in England. I know this is sketchy information, but it is all we have. My grandmother was very "closed-mouthed" when it came to his family, for w! hatever reason. Thank you, Nanette
