Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/7aB.2ACEAE/2236 Message Board Post: Hi Welcome to the monthly newsletter! This month has been pretty much Cornish oriented as demanded by you the users of this site, thanks for the feedback! There are a few other bits and pieces in here too, but more of that later. I’ve also been kept quite busy with my responsibilities as an Online Parish Clerk. I’ve neglected my transcriptions a bit getting this site up and running, so I went back to do a bit this month, in case anyone was wondering why I hadn’t added to the site for a couple weeks J. If anybody has had any interest in the Parish of Sithney, Cornwall, then look out soon for some new additions to that site. Enough with the waffling! Updates Well this month, as mentioned previously, has been mainly devoted to Cornwall, but not entirely……. Firstly we’ll start with one of the big guns of Cornish ancestry that has sprung up in recent years. The Cornwall Online Census Project (COCP) was started by the same people that started up the OPC scheme, and is very similar, but with the obvious exception that they deal with all parishes in Cornwall, and just the census returns at that. It has recently undergone a number of changes, the main one is that a search engine facility is now up and running, making it incredibly easy to find those elusive ancestors. Its still a work in progress, with the 1871 & 1881 census returns being undertaken, and the 1901 census is in the pipeline. This is one of the essential sites for finding you’re Cornish roots. Another Society has submitted for listing. The Cornish Forefathers Society has a site where you can buy all manner of transcriptions and is also chock full of links, well worth a visit. An interesting little site has also crossed my path this month. If you have found a lline of ancestry that disappears into thin air, have you ever thought that they may have gone to South America? A little known site that covers these people can now be found on my site, I found a number of odd cousins after a few minutes of searching. Also in the Cornish vein are a mining index site, some 16th century wills and also sites pertaining to the parishes of St Erth and Illogan. I did digress a bit as a few sites crossed my path. A brilliant site that finds graves for you - you can even look up the rich and famous! Also to be found this month are genealogy sites covering the Counties of Houghton & Keweenaw in Michigan, A wills exchange site which is useful and a new project specialising in Pennsylvanian ancestry. There is also a Canadian census site, and a site put together by a lady researching her own ancestry, which takes us from several Cornish parishes, to Pennsylvania again and then some. A good variety that I hope you can all find some use for. By no means have I added all the Cornish sites out there, but more will be coming soon. Coming this month..... I’m blowed if I know what I’m adding this month! I’ve had a real variety of stuff arriving, including a massive file containing links to New Zealand sites and loads more. I think I even got some links for Polish ancestry, anyone from Poland?? Thanks this month go to.... Blanche Charles For submitting the NZ stuff as mentioned above - it’ll keep me busy for months, love it!! Looking forward to working with you in the next month regards Damien
Hi. I'm hoping someone out there can help me or at least point me in the right direction. My 2nd great grandfather (does that mean gr-gr grandf.?) is Michael Laramie. He was born bet. 1836-1842 in Canada, and died 25 Mar 1922 in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. His wife's name was Harriet Plant. Here is my problem: Some of the documents/sources I've seen say he was born in "Upper Canada", some say "Lower Canada", and one even says "French Canada". I cannot find him anytime before 1870. I know he lived most of his life at the Soo, but I don't know if he came over from SSM, Ontario, Sarnia, Ontario, or Windsor, Ontario. The 1870 Census says he's 28, which would mean he was born abt. 1842, but his burial record says 1836. The 1900 census says his arrival was 1858. Now, I know there are various spellings of this name; Laramie, Laramee, Laramey, Laramy. I've tried them all. My mom says they pronounced it "Lar-mee", so I've even tried variations of that. I've even looked into dit names (which I really don't understand). Nothing! It's like he doesn't exist before 1870. I found his obit online, and it says he was from "Mustaw" Canada. I can't even find that! Someone please help me before I am totally bald! Thanks in advance, Jeanette Wineland

Hello Sandra There is a Walter Greenwood in the telephone directory at 743100 Dawson Point Road, Dymond, Ontario P0J 1P0 (that's P zero J one P zero) - phone (705) 647-4785. The country code for Canada is 1 so you would dial 001 705 647 4785. Dymond is very close to New Liskeard and the postal code actually places the residence in New Liskeard, not Dymond, so I think this is probably Dorothy's son. The Canadian telephone directory can be searched at http://1canada411.sympatico.ca/ Best wishes Dick Chandler in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Canada researching CHAND/TLER and HAD(D)ATH surnames world-wide. We have the details of the marriage as below from two reference books but I wondering if the actual marriage register entry might have any more information. "This is from the Index of Irish Marriages, Vol 2: Mark Hammond, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Temple married on 6 Feb 1844 Catherine Ossark, daughter of Charles and Catherine Ochense witnesses:Patrick Meehan, Georges Clarke This is from Mariages de St-Roch de Quebec by Pontbriand: Mark Hammond, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Temple married on 6 Feb 1844 Catherine Ossack, daughter of Charles and Catherine Delunn" These are probably my Great Great Grandparents but we know very little (nothing really!) about Mark John HAMMOND apart from that entry. We think that he was a soldier killed in around 1847. They had a son born Quebec ABT 1845 then my Great Grandmother was born in Chester (England) in ABT 1847. Catherine seems to have been Irish, though probably born in Canada, and was Catherine O'Shea. In 1851 she was living in a small Yorkshire village near Masham and was a "pauper, widow of a soldier". I presume her daughter was born on the way there, either in a barracks or perhaps workhouse. I have read that the widow of a soldier was returned by the Army to where her husband had joined the Army which would suggest he was from Yorkshire. Any little details in the full register could help a lot in solving these mysteries. Martin Briscoe Fort William Scotland

Carol There was an Irish Catholic Frank Ennis aged 22 at Brantford, Brant South, Ontario in the 1881 Canadian Census working as a Helper Machinist. And there was another Frank Ennis living in the Qu'Appelle district of Saskatchewan in 1891. I can't see one closer to your specification.
