My great-grandmother was Mary Elizabeth CORKILL; she and her 6 siblings were born and raised in Liverpool, England, during the 1850 to 1870 timeframe. After the death of their mother ~1872, Mary and her 4 younger siblings were "shipped to Canada" as "British Home Children." (In England, they were "child migrants.") The 5 CORKILL / CORKHILL children all went to different homes in Nova Scotia ! Mary married another "home child," "Stanley" LEWIS, also from Liverpool in 1879 in Truro, NS, and they migrated to MA / USA in 1881. They raised 13 children in Stoneham, MA. Julia CORKILL married Charles McNUTT, had 10 children, and remained in Truro, NS. Esther CORKILL married George COFFIN in Truro, NS, but then moved to George's home in Nantucket, MA. They had many children, also, but only a few lived. John CORKILL was only 5 when he came to Canada. He married later in life and did not have children; they remained in Nova Scotia. Robert CORKILL was only 3 when he came to Canada. He was still single in the 1911 census in Nova Scotia. I cannot find out what happened to him after that. During my research, I have found out that there are many spellings of this surname, e.g., CORKILL, CORKHILL, CORNHILL, COCKILL, COCKERELL, etc. (Original name, McCORQUODALE (sp?)) The father of these children was Evan CORKILL who was born on the Isle of Man in 1827, and was one of ten children. I have found out that this surname (all spellings) is from the Isle of Man. I have found out that many CORKILL's came to both the USA and Canada ! But, not too many people are researching them. There is a Message Board for this surname, but there is no Mailing List ! (Message Board is very rarely used.) Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

I do know that Catherine got married in the UK in 1905 and shortly after went to Canada, and Maud followed some time after. I am in touch with one of Maud's granddaughters but she unfortunately has never been told her family history. She lives in North Vancouver which is where Maud ended up, but I don't know where they lived when they first arrived, everyone who would have known has now died. Maud and Catherine's families never kept in contact with each other either; Maud's granddaughter was completely unaware that she had other Canadian relations. Thanks for any help you can give, Robin
