Much of the family history is unnecessary. Perhaps only posting your Brickwalls - rather than the entire family line - would be helpful. There is far to much information to read through. Your message may be ignored. *it came through to the Canada GenWeb Mail list - as a large paragraph/s. Posting the Surnames: In Alphabetical Order makes the names easier to spot - if there are others researching the same names. Postings Surnames In Capital Letters - helps the reader - as well makes the names easier to spot in the message - as well makes the message easier to read. Perhaps - for the present - Posting only the names and some information - about the persons who moved to, lived in,born in Canada - and the U.S.A. would make your message easier to follow. Have you posted your Scottish,English to any of the Mail Lists in Scotland/England:. http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.britisles Perhaps Posting - following only one family line at a time- may be less intimidating - than the entire family lines Cheers & Good Luck, Stella

Who were his parents? I remember reading somewhere that he may have been from Prescott County. He died by accidental drowning in the canal near Cornwall. He and his wife were married in 1834 at Trinity Anglican Church in Cornwall, Stormont, Ontario, Canada. He has been recorded as being employed as a merchant, a schoolteacher and as being owner of a tavern in Mille Roches, Stormont, Ontario, Canada called Morgan's Inn along with his father-in-law Hector Manson. After the death of William, his wife married James Milroy. The known children of William J. & Isabel Eliza (Manson) Hamilton were: 1. Who were her parents? I have been told that her father's name was Daniel, but I don’t have any proof of this and don’t know what the source was for this information. She and her husband were married in 1806 at Saint Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Williamstown, Glengarry, Ontario, Canada but lived in nearby Mille Roches, Stormont, Ontario, Canada where all of their children were born. Their property, which was purchased by Hector in 1804, was described as being the west half of lot 25 on the 2nd concession, 4th range of Cornwall Twp., Stormont county. Where were they from and who were their parents? By 1851, Helen/Ellen was a widow and was living with her daughter in Charlottenbugh Twp., Glengarry, Ontario, Canada. I’m not sure where either Thomas or Helen/Ellen are buried but James Alexander Dow is buried with his wife in the cemetery at Saint Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Williamstown, Glengarry, Ontario, Canada. Their children were born in Montreal or Quebec City, Quebec, Canada (depending on which records you go by). Thomas Dow and Helen/Ellen Grant were married in 1815 at St.Gabriel's Presbyterian Church, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Thomas was employed as a shipwright. At least two of their children married and settled in Glengarry county, Ontario, Canada. As far as I’ve seen in records, the family was Presbyterian with Scottish heritage. The known siblings of James Alexander Dow were: 1. Margaret Dow (b.1823 Montreal, Quebec, Canada; d.unknown; married Gilman Taylor and lived in Glengarry County, Ontario, Canada), 2. Louis Dow (b.1826 Montreal, Quebec, Canada; d."in infancy"), 3. Mary Dow (b.1827 Montreal, Quebec, Canada; d.unknown), 4. Ann Dow (b.1830 Montreal, Quebec, Canada; d.unknown). Where were they from? Was his wife, Mary's maiden name really Grant or was it something else? Where was she born and who were her parents? In 1851, John & Mary were living in a 1-story log house next door to daughter, Sarah Jane and her husband on the west half of Lot 26, 4th Concession, Charlottenburgh Twp., Glengarry, Ontario, Canada. John was buried in the cemetery at Saint Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Williamstown but I can’t find his wife’s place of burial. So far, the only known child of John & Mary Grant was Sarah Jane Grant. I know this is a lot of information, but there were and are many Grant’s in Glengarry county and this may help sort out who John & Mary were. Great-great-grandfather Seth Gilbank b 1836 Wetwang. Great-great-great-grandfather John Gilbank b 1804 Sherrif Hutton/Lilling Green, North Yorkshire d 1885 Wetwang. John Gilbank was married and living in Wetwang from the 1820s onwards, he worked throughout his life as a farm labourer, as did his son, Seth. Samuel (1859-45) lived at Wetwang all his life and was a shepherd, while my grandfather, George, was a farm labourer then foreman in various nearby villages, before buying a farm at Pocklington, East Yorkshire, with my father and uncle. I have not been looking into my roots for long, but it looks as though John Gilbank had at least five sons. Three, Mark (b1828), John (b1831) and Thomas (b1838) all appear to have emigrated across the Atlantic and started a dynasty on the American continent; while Seth and Samuel lived all their lives in Wetwang. Several Gilbanks are buried in Wetwang churchyard. I can find no record of any other Gilbank family, so any Gillbank that originates from Wetwang in the 19th century almost certainly descends from John Gilbank. I live with my family (including a son called John) in Pocklington, which is about 15 miles from Wetwang. I would be happy to swap any details about the family, or if you have any other trans-Atlantic 'Wetwang Gilbank' contacts I would be grateful to receive them. One of my husbands ancestors (Alexander Crabb - residence 144 Paul Street, Syracuse, NY, USA) enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force in W.W.I. I found his name and Attestation Paper for him -- at the top of his Attestation Paper it reads "2nd Depot Bn 1st C.O.R" and "B.C. R.M." Can anyone tell me where I can find more information on this? It seems strange to me that as an American (born in Scotland but immigrated when young) could join a Canadian Force? Thank you Angela
Hi Angela, There were many persons - other than Canadians who joined this force. persons from England, Australia - U.S.A. etc. From the National Archive of Canada. http://data2.archives.ca/cef/gat1/063548a.gif http://data2.archives.ca/cef/gat1/063548b.gif Service Records are Available - for a very reasonable cost - the information excellent. http://www.collectionscanada.ca/02/0201060101_e.html#consult Cheers, Stella. Ontario, Scotch, Methodist Dale, Angus, Son, single, b. 30 September 1897, age 3, b. Ontario The only birth registration I could find was for John Boyle Jr. on 12 February 1884 in Mount Forest, Wellington County, the son of John Boyle, railroad contractor & Bridget Clarke, which confirms the second marriage theory. Unfortunately, I cannot find a marriage entry for John and Mary; given that they were Catholic, they often did not bother with civil registration since they had been married in the Catholic Church.

I just noticed I entered the wrong name in my previous post for Angus's wife - I accidentally wrote "Georgina" as a wife with Angus like with Isaac but I meant Frances. I guess I have "Georgina" on my mind :-) I entered: Dale, Angus, head, age 21, Immigrated to the USA 1907, naturalized 1919, born in Canada Dale, Georgina, wife, age 17, born in Michigan I meant to write: 1920;Census Place: West Bloomfield, Oakland, Michigan; Roll: T625_790; Page: 5B; Enumeration District: 209; Image: 998 Dale, Angus, head, age 21, Immigrated to the USA 1907, naturalized 1919, born in Canada Dale, Frances, wife, age 17, born in Michigan There is only one Georgina (wife of Isaac Dale).

I have repeatedly asked my grand-father for information and he just simply couldn't remember. When I called him with the info that you sent he got all excited and said that's my grandma and grandpa. William is Angus' brother and the other Georgina is his niece. Anyways, thanks again, now I have a starting point. I really appreciate it!

Looking at the 1920 census I see he is listed with his wife Frances. It says he immigrated to the USA in 1907 and was naturalized in 1919. 1920;Census Place: West Bloomfield, Oakland, Michigan; Roll: T625_790; Page: 5B; Enumeration District: 209; Image: 998 Dale, Angus, head, age 21, Immigrated to the USA 1907, naturalized 1919, born in Canada Dale, Georgina, wife, age 17, born in Michigan It says Angus's father was born in England and his mother was born in Canada. The interesting part is, on the same page in the house before Angus's house is: Dale, Isaac, head, age 59, Immigrated to the USA 1907, born in England Dale, Georgina, wife, age 56, Immigrated to the USA 1907, born in Canada Dale, William, son, age 26, Immigrated to the USA 1907, naturalized 1919, born in Canada It is possible that Isaac and Georgina might be his parents. Maybe if you can locate their obituaries they might list Angus as a son and Frances as the daughter-in-law. At this site the 1901 Canadian Census is searchable: http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census/index.html (I found an Isaac Dale but no Angus living with him). Oddly enough searching for Angus Dale in the 1901 Canadian Census came up with an Angus and a William Dale but living in the John & Mary Boyle household listed as his sons in London, Ontario. Very confusing.

Can I clarify that we have the right John Greer? His mom was Mary Slater and dad was James Greer from Londonderry, Ireland. They came to NB with sons, Thomas, John, Moses and Robert. John married Martha Lillian Oliver married 11/21/1905 and had daughter Lily Mae 2/18/08. John died 9/30/1907, so did he and Martha have John William before Lily? There is no record in the Archives about him. Could your cousin give me more details or documentation on that, if she is comfortable with that. I don't have any info on him. I know that John died suddenly and unexpectedly, but didn't know where. Thank you for telling me it is in Hope, NB Do you know the date? I have his birthdate as being 1868. But the exact date I don't know, but would love to have! Along with his brothers' and dad's. Does your cousin have more info on the decedents? I have for Robert (married Celia Piers/Pierce) George William Clara Robert Lillian Alice Ruby Florence Gordon......whew! For Thomas I have him married to Annie Saunders Freeman Clara James Cora Charles I have limited info on decendents as well, at least dates and children. If you print this out for your cousin, perhaps she can give me more info? cairolyle at netzero.net is my email address if she wants to speak with me directly. Thanks! I have been in touch with a few folks in the family tree, but don't want to place their names here as I don't have permission. Thank you, thank you for getting back in touch with me. I truly hope to hear from you soon! Joy
I am an English researcher, looking into the history of organized crime in Canada and America. As part of this scholarly project, I need to obtain any Canadian federal police records on certain deceased organized crime figures who lived in Canada. However, under the provisions of the Canadian Freedom of Information Act, only Canadian citizens can request records. Therefore, is there anyone who would be so kind as to request these records for me? Of course I can pay expenses involved. I would expect no hitches. Thank you. David Critchley, Ph.D.
