To all:- Just getting my usual finger exercises done as we have have not had too much work to do lately -- the Oct. 7/2000 figures seemed carved in stone. Letters are still coming in, the occasional petition -- all memos are forwarded directly to Gordon Watts for exact time and date. My one and only Aunt Iva asked my brother recently if the census had been released as yet? He had to tell her there was an election stopping any action at present -- her comment "they just had one!". Aunt Iva's reason for the 1911 census? My mother and all sisters were born in Bucksport, Maine, my grandfather in Dedham, Maine - son of Julius Adams and Emily Davis. The family came to Liverpool, Nova Scotia in 1909 -- the 1911 would be my aunt's FIRST Canadian census. Many others must feel the same way -- but my aunt is now 98 yrs., 6 mos. ------ It will be difficult to contact Members of Parliament for a period of time, unless electioneering in the area. Prime Minister Jean Chretien "just happened" to be in the area where my stepson and stepdaughter live, Main St., Dartmouth, NS. He said he "had heard about the campaign!" Both of the above are family researchers, have promised to keep asking every candidate they meet. ------ As you know, Nova Scotia also will be having municipal elections, with a number of candidates "people of colour" -- usual for Liverpool area. One brother lives there, was missed on enumeration so had to register. During a Happy Birthday phone call, he asked me how far back I had been able to go on census and other means in all family connections. As he works outdoors as a woodsman, his skin is quite dark -- and yes, he is the one who will only wear Mi'kmaq-made mocassins!!!! He was asked ethnic origin, religion and other unnecessary questions -- also asked IF HE HAD NEGRO HERITAGE!!! When he asked "Why?", he was told if so, he would be able to vote for the coloured candidates. My brother has taken my advice, has been in contact with his friend, Gerald Keddy, MP, also the new mayor of Liverpool, John Leefe, former MLA. The editor of the newspaper has also been contacted. I am still looking for that link to my past, I have many friends but not relations!! -- hope above does not happen to others. Muriel M.
