    3. In Summary: This is a response to a question about what was the so-called "Patriots War" and was it associated with the 1837 Upper Canadian rebellion Preamble: On the eve of a very important Canadian election, and during the week of both the Canada Day and St. Jean Baptiste celebrations, here we go with a mini Canadian History lesson ... Commentary: It is sad to state that even the need to answer this question in a forum such as this is a sad statement of how poorly our Canadian history is taught in our schools. The events surrounding both 1837 rebellions is vibrant and exciting and so vitally important to understand the reasons behind the formation of our Country in 1867, and indeed some of the political situations that currently exist. Ok, to the point - there were technically two separate events which began in the same year and have become known as the Rebellions of 1837. The Upper Canada Rebellion was led by William Lyon Mackenzie, (who became the maternal grandfather of Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King). The underlying causes of the Upper Canadian Rebellion against the so called "Family Compact" are different, but yet similar to the underlying causes of the Lower Canadian Rebellion against the so-called "Chateau Clique". The Lower Canada Rebellion of 1837 and 1838 was led by Louis Joseph Papineau, and was known in the French language as the "rebellion des Patriotes" (which translates into "Patriots War"). Some of the Lower Canadian "Patriots" (as opposed to the Upper Canadian "Rebels") were members of the "Parti Canadien", which later became known as the "Parti Patriote" - which is in turn one of the ancestors of the Quebec nationalism currently exhibited in the Parti Quebecois. If you do a Google Search there are several citations to the Patriots War. May I respectfully remind all who read this note that those known either as "Patriots" or "Rebels" and who committed the civil disobedience and fought in armed battles in 1837 and 1838 were fighting for something that they did not have, and they wanted to do what we now take for granted - have the right to vote in free elections. On Monday I implore you all to exercise one of your rights and responsibilities that comes with being a Canadian citizen. It matters not which party - and remember that you can even formally reject the ballot altogether, and done properly it has to be counted - it is not a 'spoilled' ballot. Ask the Deputy Returning Officer what the formal rules are for rejecting the ballot before you proceed to the Polling Clerks. When you do vote may I suggest saying a silent "thank you" in tribute to not only the Rebels and Patriots of the Rebellions of 1837 who began the process, but also to all those men and women who fought in any Canadian War to preserve our freedom! What a marvelous way to honour and pay homage to the very ancestors and family members that we are trying to trace in researching our genealogies! And remember, that all things being equal, this will be the Canadian Parliament which frees the hostage post 1906 census records! Cheers! J.
