    3. Hi Bonnie. Our legal action to regain access to the 1911 National Census has already been heard in Federal Court. We are currently waiting for the Judge to bring down his decision. That being said, we should all be writing as many letters as we can to newspaper editors, MPs (both old and new) and Senators, and publicizing the Census issue in as many ways as we can think off. Call your local talk shows to let them know. One of the biggest problems we have had is to educate the general public as to the problem. Even after six or more years of campaigning it is obvious that many in the genealogy and historical communities are not yet aware of the problem. It is more important than ever to now advise our MPs -- especially the newly elected ones -- that ANY legislation that includes conditions and restrictions such as those contained in the now defunct Bill S-13 are simply not acceptable. The ONLY acceptable resolution is to allow the same unrestricted access to Historic Census records after 1906 that is currently available for 240 years of records up to that time. The government has not demonstrated any need for any restrictions to access other than the 92-year waiting period after collection of Census. There has been no groundswell of opposition to access or any request by the public to cut off the access we have had in the past. We do not believe that any legislative changes should be necessary to regain access -- all that SHOULD be required is for the government to direct the Chief Statistician to return care and control of the records to the National Archivist. We need to spread the word, far and wide, in as many ways as possible. We need to gather great numbers of signatures on our NEW petitions so that we can overwhelm the House and Senate with them when Parliament resumes sitting in September. As indicated in a previous posting the only way to remove Fellegi is if he voluntarily retires, or is replaced by the Prime Minister appointing someone else. We can encourage the PM to do that, but so far he has not seemed inclined to do anything in that direction. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. By law he should have turned over these records to the National Archives years ago. Can we now get him forced out? He is not an elected official, but was appointed by Jean Cretien. If we can get enough Editorials going, in the midst of this confusing new government, we may not have to resort to a court case. Just a thought, Bonnie Weber

    3. The only way to educate the public is with LETTERS TO THE EDITOR or News Releases as has been published in many papers. Many people are not working with computers, but a great many read newspapers -- I am one who reads many, both paper and online. Muriel M.
