    3. Hi, I have no intentions of telling anyone how to vote either, but I will mention here that neither of the four parties that are running candidates in every riding in Canada has any mention of the historical census records and their protection in their Party's Platform. You will have to rely on your local candidate being honest enough to speak the truth to you or that any correspondence with the party they represent is being truthful. The Liberal http://www.liberal.ca/platform_e_1.aspx The Conservative http://64.26.173.32/platform/english/index.htm The NDP http://ndp.ca/platform The Green http://www.greenparty.ca/index.php?module=article&view=291 I don't believe anyone on this list is unaware of how the Government under the Rt. Hon. Jean Cretien or its present leader the Rt. Hon. Paul Martin, has treated the issue of the historical census records being turned over to the care and control of the National Archives. What do I think of all this, as I wait for answers that have not been forthcoming? Well judge for yourself. This is the letter that I wrote to my present MP for CapeBreton/Canso. ***Looking for your support on the immediate release of the 1911 Census Dear Mr. Rodger Cuzner, We have been in touch before in February 2003, when I submitted a copy of my submission to the Senate Standing Committee concerning Bill S-13. At that time your reply to me was: Date: Tue, 18 Feb 2003 11:33:37 -0500 From: "Cuzner, Rodger - M.P." <Cuzner.R@parl.gc.ca> To: "'joseph000@ns.sympatico.ca'" <joseph000@ns.sympatico.ca> Ms. MacDonald: I have received your e-mail and wanted to thank you for your kind words of support. I agree with your thoughts that no part of our Heritage should be "fragmented or destroyed". Again, thanks and have a nice day. Rodger Cuzner, M.P. You have agreed with my thoughts that no part of our Heritage should be 'fragmented or destroyed' which I believe is commendable for any member of parliament to express. What this does not tell me is whether or not you are in favour of 'public access to these records' after 92 year. closure. Mr. Cuzner, I don't mind telling you that I am completely fed up with the way that the government has been stalling, erecting road blocks and anything else that they can think of to avoid this issue. It boggles my mind that so many liberal members of parliament are in favour of the release of the 'Post 1906 census.' Yet still the 1911 records are kept under lock and key by the Chief Statistician Dr. Fellegi. Why aren't these census records where they belong with the National Archives? They should have been in the National Archives care and control since June 2003. I am coming to the conclusion that the present government has a hidden agenda in regards to the people of Canada and their rights to know their heritage and have access to it. My questions to you if re-elected as MP for CapeBreton Canso are: "Do you fully support that all Census Records of Canada (both past and future censuses), be release to the National Archives at the proper time and given public access after 92 years closure from the date of the taking of said census?" "Will you do all in your power to see that Dr. Fellegi (Chief Statistician) is made to obey the laws of Canada and turn the 1911 census over to the care and control of the National Archives and made available for public access? Sincerely Juanita MacDonald R.R. 1 Whycocomagh P.S. I was in your Dominion office on June 3rd, concerning this matter. I left my name and e-mail address and was informed that I would hear from you by the next day. I also talked to your representative Donnie Morrison for this area on the day you were suppose to be in this part of the riding. He informed me that your visit had been cancelled, but he would inform you of our conversation. *** I haven't as of this moment got a reply and quite frankly I don't expect one. I will be honest I haven't received replies yet from either of the other party candidates, though I am hoping that I receive one by Sunday evening from the Conservative candidate. I spoke to one of his assistants and she was extremely interested in this matter and we spoke at length on the phone about the Canada Census Campaign and the Historical census records. The Conservative, NDP and Green party candidates in the CapeBreton/Canso riding are new to the political scene, so I would have to rely on correspondence from Jack Layton NDP, and Steven Harper, Conservative. Mr. Harper was representing the Canadian Alliance at the time, but I am assuming that his position is still the same as both the Alliance and the Progressive Conservatives held the same position at that time; "supports the preservation of census records and the subsequent transfer of these records to the National Archives for public release. We believe that keeping the records confidential for the historical 92-year period is an adequate length of time..." Jack Layton of the NDP was also in agreement. At that time I summitted copies to various members of parliament of my submission to the senate committee. The two I didn't hear from were the former P.M. Rt. Hon. Jean Crétien and present Rt. Hon. Paul Martin. The late Hon. Joseph Howe once said, "A wise nation preserves its records, and fosters national pride and love of country by perpetual reference to the sacrifices and glories of the past." The Historical census records carry the names of all those unknown heros that made this country great, our ancestors. So think of them when you cast your ballot on Monday, June 28th. Vote for the candidate you believe will do his or her utmost to have the historical census records turned over to the National Archives where they belong, and opened to public access.
