In the interests of fairness I would like to report that I received a letter from the Privacy Commissioner commenting on my letter to the Expert panel, which I had copied to him. . His letter is over two pages long and quotes and rebuts the arguments I tried to establish. As I am not a typist I'll just quote the final paragraphs. "I hold historical and genealogical research in high regard, as I do all intellectual endeavour. I do not accept, however, that intellectual endeavour exists in an civic or ethical vacuum. And I do not accept that historians and genealogists have a right to personal information, a right that trumps the rights of the people whose information it is.
