As sent by Adele Turner to the National Post:- To the Editor: I am one of Canada's ordinary citizens that has, in the past, allowed MP's and Government officials to make decisions on my behalf without taking time to make written or verbal complaint about any issues. I felt that it would be a waste of time as no one really cares about one person's opinion. However, on this important issue, I felt I should at least try. I don't want to be accepting of any ruling of "BURN THE POST 1901 CENSUS" as such a decision could have dire consequences for all family historians whose family may have stayed or passed our shores both now and in the future. Somehow, we must put a stop to the "railroading" techniques that have worked in the past by government officials and lawmakers to get amendments and laws passed by the House of Commons and the Senate. It would be my great wish that our national newspapers would do more research and investigative reporting. Articles would not be printed as fact when they aren't factual at all. It is my opinion, when you quoted in the article, (Keep Census Data Secret Public Tells Ottawa. - by Jim Bronskill. Ottawa - Canadians reject the idea of releasing historical Census - NP 20 June 2000, p. A11) it was a quotation directly from the Expert Panel's survey carried out by Environics Research without your newspaper asking, "What were the questions asked by the Focus groups?" "How where they worded?" "Did any of the questions quote the imaginary "Promise"?. Also, can you tell me if your newspaper has researched the Government publication "Hansard" from 1906 to 1911? If someone had, you would have found that the imaginary "promise" that keeps getting quoted was a figment of someone's imagination. See the article by Gordon Watts entitled, THE MYTHS OF THE CENSUS at http://GlobalGazette.net/gazce/gazce53.htm It would be my wish that you would publish the piece by Gordon Watts entitled "The Myths of the Census" so that all Canadians can benefit from both sides of the argument instead of getting a distorted view from your article date June 20,2000 by Jim Bronskill.
