    3. (crest) JOHN F. O'REILLY Member of Parliament Haliburton-Victoria-Brock OTTAWA July 10th, 2000 Muriel M. Davidson 25 Crestview Ave. Brampton, ON L6W 2R8 Dear Ms. Davidson: Thank you for your letter received June 12th, 2000 regarding the release of census reports. Statistics Canada says the Privacy Act is meant to maintain the privacy of the individual and the family. Furthermore, there are estates and claims that must be finalized before personal information can be made public. Statistics Canada is aware that some family members are trying to attain this information and that they have no intention of intruding with regards to the family's privacy. However, there are genealogists and researchers who are trying to attain this information as well. It would be too difficult to create a law that would satisfy all. I would be in favour of the release of Census reports as long as they do not interfere with the privacy of individuals who may be affected on a personal basis with the release of private family related materials. Please find enclosed some information regarding Access to Post-1901 Census records. If you have any further questions or requests, please feel free to contact my office.
