Greetings All. With a positive response from newly elected MP Michael Savage Nova Scotia is once again the only Province that is Solid Gold -- meaning that all 11 MPs for that Province that have indicated their support for public access to Historic Census records. If you receive a response from any MP or Senator regarding their position on the Census access issue please forward it so that it can be added to their correspondence log on the Scoreboards of the Post 1901 Census Project website. The only way we can update the Scoreboards is if we hear from you. Your letters to MPs or Senators may be added to their correspondence logs as well. We are approaching the time when we want to send some of our accumulated Petitions to the House of Commons and the Senate of Canada. We need your signatures to show that we still seek the same access, with no added conditions or restrictions, to Historic Census records after 1906 that we currently have for records up to that time. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Greetings All. My letter to the editor regarding our PMs 'deep roots' was printed in todays issue of the Ottawa Citizen. (8 September 2004). There were some minor editorial changes but nothing that changed the intent of my letter. It was on page A17 and had a bold headline stating "PM should intervene to release census data". Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Watts gordon_watts@telus.net Co-chair Canada Census Committee Port Coquitlam, BC http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census en francais http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Index_f
To all:- Labour Day and many vacations have passed, and for some, children are back at school, giving all a few more minutes for personal work and research. It would be great if we could find the 1911 (or later) census on Automated Genealogy so we are asking for any assistance. 1. Check the scoreboards of both Senators and Members of Parliament http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index6.htm and for Senators http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Senscore1.htm 2. Check the symbols -- we hope those who have the GOLD symbol still agree. GREEN means the person is undecided or else a secretary answered; BLUE ? means the person could not bother answering or is a new Member of Parliament. At present we only have one RED X in Ontario which will remain unless the MP replies personally. 3. E-mails are easy to do -- but are not always successful -- too easy for a secretary to delete. LETTERS, either typed or written by hand, are more acceptable. Do NOT use white paper -- even hot pink might be more noticeable -- and as you have already paid the postage (in Canada) , use large envelopes -- FREE!!!! 4. Your letter could contain genetically inherited diseases facts, lost family members. The questions and other data has been placed on the census pages for your usage -- but try putting it in your own words. [It is alright if ONE person mails to all 308 MPs with the same letter, but we should vary the wording, or it becomes a government form letter]. 5. House of Commons address: NAME, House of Commons, Ottawa, ON K1A 0A6 Senate address: NAME, Senate of Canada, Ottawa, ON K1A 0A4 Several others should receive letters, but wording would definitely be different -- e.g. Dr. Fellegi, etc. 6. Copies of letters to politicians are requested for the scoreboards, FORWARD to Gordon Watts at gordon_watts@telus.net Should any reply be received, this is also requested. 7. Should any reader wish to become active and learn more, please contact me -- we have our own mail list, committee and Friends list as we attempt to keep postings off the regular lists as much as possible. 8. Petitions are needed -- street names not needed, only NAME, city, province/state and postal code/zip code. Download from http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/ Looking forward to many copies of postings -- try using BCC to let us know -- then the politician will not know we received a copy. Muriel M. Davidson muriel_davidson@symatico.ca Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee 25 Crestview Avenue, Brampton, ON L6W 2R8 [Phone numbers to YOUR MP or Senator are suggested] http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~downhome/post1901census.htm
To all:- Many will be involved in family get-togethers on this Labout Day weekend -- which means many getting together for barbeques and picnics before the young ones head off to school. This is an excellent time to print off Senate and House of Commons petitions -- and Page 1 MUST be included. These are downloadable at http://www/globalgenealogy.com/Census/ Addresses are given where these are to be mailed. Feel in the mood for writing letters -- printed on coloured paper, as white seems to be the official "Hill" colour. Check the following http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index6.htm/ Send a family reason for desiring the release of the 1911 census, and there are many among us! Many have GOLD ticks -- I have faith they have not changed his or her mind. We need to contact the newcomers and any letter writers are invited to use the questions on the scoreboard, changed in his or her style of writing. Should any be interested in becoming a Canada Census Committee member, we need all the assistance we can get. Just send a memo to me -- I will add you very quickly. Reason for this? There are many mail lists in Canada but it is preferred not to post all the "inter-office" memos on the mail lists -- but rather among ourselves. Things are becoming more interesting -- and as we know, Parliament does not open until October 4, 2004. We need the petitions for support of the desire to have the unrestricted release of the 1911 and later Canadian census records. There will be a census bill later -- but it must be unrestrictive and only 92 years. Postage is FREE -- even with large envelopes. Send letters to NAME / House of Commons / Ottawa, ON K1A 0A6 Looking for lots of mail -- do not forget Page 1 -- very important Muriel M. Hello, So far I've only heard back from two MP's.. Ed Broadbent who's assistant incharge of correspondence is my good friend Cynthia who was until the end of July the President of the Nova Scotia Young New Democrats. She assured me she would get an answer from Ed... so we are waiting on that. We also heard back from another MP, a newly elected one, who gave us a referal to their Critic incharge of this topic... however we've pressed him again for an answer. I believe that if the entire caucus prior to the June 28th election was in favor then chances are they newly elected ones are, but it is still an issue of asking them and getting a positive answer./... I am also working on Mike Savage the newly elected Liberal MP from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. So that's my two cents... The only way we could be certain of "plain" release or "unconditional" release of census records is to ask any of the NDP Party. Nathaniel Smith, member of the Nova Scotia Youth New Demnocratics, is running for a seat on Halifax City Council. He is attempting to have all of the party members reply with very positive answers. Greetings All FYI. I am posting an excellent letter sent by Gordon Taylor to Prime Minister Paul Martin. It is posted with permission. Anyone sending a letter to their MP or other parliamentary representatives should feel free to post them to the CCC list. Happy Hunting. Gordon ========================== 3 September 2004. Right Honourable Paul Martin, Office of the Prime Minister, 80 Wellington St., Ottawa, ON., K1A OA2 Dear Mr. Martin: Family History Research: I was delighted to see the short article and photograph that appeared in the Ottawa Citizen of September 1. I trust that your son and his aunts have a great deal of success in finding and documenting the roots of the Martin family. By becoming family historians your family members have joined 7.5 million Canadians who are dedicated to researching their family history. As you must be aware family history is one of the important means of keeping fresh in the minds of our generation and of our descendants the contribution our ancestors have made not only to our lives but to those of all Canadians. As I am sure your researchers will tell you the data contained in the censuses of Canada are very important to the successful outcome of their research. Canada has traditionally released the historic censuses for public use 92 years after the census was conducted. The 1911 census, however, has not been released although it was due for release in 2003. In spite of many letters, petitions and personal pleas to members of parliament and to senior bureaucrats, the Chief Statistician has consistently declined to turn the census records over to the Library and Archives of Canada as current law requires. I am sure that a wink and a nod from your office could obtain the desired release of this very important census. All family historians in Canada and elsewhere including your own family researchers will be forever grateful for your help. As a family historian who has family members in Canada and the United Kingdom and the United States the availability of consistent and regular census data is a vital part of understanding who was where and when. I look forward to the release of the 1911 census of Canada so that I can understand my family history before I become part of my family history. Thank you for your assistance in making the information from the 1911 Census available to all family historians. Sincerely yours Gordon Taylor
Greetings All. My thanks to Gordon Taylor in Ottawa for advising of a picture and article in the Ottawa Citizen. It would appear that our Prime Minister, or at least part of his family, has an interest in their ancestry. I was unable to access the article myself but according to Gordon, on page A-11 of the Ottawa Citizen, September 1, 2004, there is a picture story titled: "Exploring the Martin Family Roots". The story line is as follows: "Prime Minister Paul Martin's youngest son, David Martin, centre, and his two aunts, Anita Martin, left and Claire Guay, were on hand yesterday at the Meet Paul Martin Senior exhibit at The Champlain Trail Museum and Pioneer Village in Pembroke. The exhibit, which runs until October 6, explores the Martins' deep roots in the Pembroke community, focusing on the prime minister's father, who grew up in the town." On learning of this article I sent a letter to the editor of the Ottawa Citizen. At 7:50 this morning I received a call to confirm that I had written the letter and to advise that they were considering it for publication. My letter, copied to the Prime Minister, is copied below. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Jean" <pm@pm.gc.ca> Sent: Thursday, September 02, 2004 9:28 PM Subject: "Exploring the Martin Family Roots" Editor, The Ottawa Citizen. Re: "Exploring the Martin Family Roots" (Ottawa Citizen, 1 September 2004, page A-11) Interesting that Prime Minister Paul Martin has explored and is now promoting "the Martin's deep roots" when he will not take steps to allow an estimated 7.5 million Canadian genealogists and family historians to do the same. He refuses to direct the Chief Statistician of Canada to return care and control of Historic Census records to the National Archivist for subsequent public access in accordance with clauses in the Access to Information and Privacy Acts. Those clauses make specific provision for public access of 'personal information' collected through Census or Survey, 92 years after collection. The 1911 National Census of Canada should have been made available after June 2003. It has been withheld by the simple expedient of the Chief Statistician refusing to return control of the records to the National Archivist. We believe that refusal to be unlawful. It usurps the authority delegated to the National Archivist to determine what governmental records are of archival or historical value and that shall be deposited in the Library and Archives of Canada. In dictating policy instead of following policy determined through legislation passed by Parliament it usurps the authority of that body as well. Mr. Martin told the Public Service that they are not an 'alternate legislature' and they should stick to consulting Canadians on policy, but leave the decision-making up to MPs (Ottawa Citizen, 9 May 2003, page A4 - "Leave decision-making alone, Martin warns PS" - Katherine May). He does not practice what he preaches. He is apparently content to allow the Chief Statistician to dictate policy that contravenes the Library and Archives of Canada Act, the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act. The people of Canada do not believe that any public servant, regardless of how highly placed or regarded, is above the laws of Canada. It is time for Mr. Martin to act. We call upon him to immediately direct the Chief Statistician to return control of Historic Census records to the National Archivist for public access in accordance with existing legislation. How about it Mr. Prime Minister? Give us the means to research our ancestry. Give us the access to Historic Census records that the Laws of Canada state we are entitled to. Gordon A. To all:- Check http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Score1.htm#AB One will find about 21 GOLD symbols, 5 Blue ? from newcomers, but only ONE Green Fence -- the UNDECIDED symbol. My letter to the Deputy Prime Minister, Anne McLellan requested she reply with her views about the release of Post-1901 census records, with the 1911 one year late in being released. I am copying in Hants County as the Deputy Prime Minister and I both hail from Nova Scotia -- presently elected in Edmonton Centre. The Canada Census Committee do not expect David Emerson to speak for all of the 308 Members of Parliament -- we hope some would be able to give a personal viewpoint, if one is able. It is refreshing to note that the Leader of the NDP Party has stated 100% of its members are in favour of census release. Following is the letter received from the Deputy Prime Minister Muriel M. Davidson muriel_davidson@sympatico.ca Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee Brampton, ON -- formerly Queens County, Nova Scotia http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/index.htm/ ============================ Aug 30, 2004 Ms. Muriel M. Davidson Co-chair, Canada Census Committee 25 Crestview Avenue Brampton, Ontario L6W 2R8 Dear Ms. Davidson:- Thank you for your correspondence of April 5, 2004, concerning the availability of the 1911 census data, and for the congratulatory remarks. I apologize for the delay in responding. The government of Canada is considering ways to strike a balance between the privacy rights of Canadians and the needs of historians and genealogists to have access to historical census data, including the 1911 census records. As you will know, this is a challenging area, but we remain committed to making progress. Since the issue you raise falls within the purview of my colleague the Honourable David Emerson, Minister of Industry, I have taken the liberty of forwarding your correspondence to him for his information and consideration. Thank you again for taking the time to write. Yours sincerely, A. Anne McLellan c.c.: The Honourable David Emerson, P.C., M.P. Minister of Industry === All I wanted was a YES or NO!!!
Many thanks to all members of the Alberta Family History Society for adding 51 signatures on petitions to the Senate of Canada for release of our Post-1901 census records. Freda Stewart, a Canada Census Committee member, forwarded the petitions with a short note. Freda stated there were a couple of events coming up in September and October where the AFHS plans to make its presence known. Also, the FamilyRoots 2004 event is mid-October with a demo planned for that -- Thanks, Freda! Both Senate and House of Commons petitions may be signed at the same time, street addresses may be regarded as personal privacy. We need only name, city, province and postal code. http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/index.htm/ [Addresses where to send petitions are also there--Page 1 is needed.] Alberta has been the province which provided the most signatures in the past -- I have kept the records on disk. Above all, not only committee members may obtain signatures on petitions but even teenagers! This petition is new and although one may have signed the previous one, all may sign again. Muriel M. To The Rt. Hon. Paul Martin, Prime Minister of Canada Congratulations on your election in your riding. We sincerely hope you will be in agreement with the following. However, the UNDECIDED symbol on the Post-1901 Census Scoreboard does not suitably reflect the thought and strength of a leader of a wonderful country such as Canada. Canadians, assisted by people of other countries, have been working since March 1999 for the release of the 1911 census records, which were scheduled to have been released June 1, 2003. The records were enumerated on March 1, 1911 -- a long time ago, and we know United States has access to the 1930 census records of their country. Census records are not only necessary when searching for family members, but these were also the last records enumerated before World War One. To date we have both 1901 and 1906 online, the latter of three provinces http://automatedgenealogy.com/ If you check you will notice only basic details are given - no private data, as this is only an index. There is a second page on microfiche, but this only gives Nationality, Place of Birth, Religion, Occupation -- PRIVACY is not invaded and 92 years is a very long time.. The Canada Census Committee have a scoreboard -- you are on http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Score4.htm#PQ The GREEN symbol denotes that you are UNDECIDED or else someone else answered for you, which is not unusual. At present we do not have an existing census release bill, but are collecting signatures on petitions, coming from many countries -- see http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/ There is a great deal of information there, some of it back to when John Manley was Minister of Industry, the Expert Panel, genetics, -- plus the Canada Census committee http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~downhome/committee.html [Several changes will be made on this page] Sincerely hope you will exchange the UNDECIDED Green symbol for a Gold tick meaning YES. If not, we request you give us your reasons - 92 years is long enough. The Canada Census Committee members request you to instruct Dr. Ivan P, Fellegi to transfer the Canadian census records automatically to our National Archives -- at present, only you, as Prime Minister, can do this -- or replace him with another. At present we feel Dr. Fellegi is withholding the 1911 census records illegally -- these should have been transferred to National Library and Archives Canada long ago and released June 1, 2003 -- a year ago! YOU are the only one who has the authority to direct Dr. Fellegi to transfer the 1911 census records. Muriel M. Posting may be forwarded To all:- Today, while watching the OPRAH show about times gone by, many interesting facts were televised about slavery years ago, selected volunteer families living today as people lived 400 years ago. It was a great show and made me think how important is the televised data or the printed word. We must remember that not all people are "computerized", but like myself, enjoy reading newspapers. The editorial page and the cartoons are great -- not biased -- but often reflect the thoughts of the majority of a community. Letters to the Editor might be the best way to educate the readers during the period before Parliament begins in October. There is a great deal of information which may be copied at http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/ The site is in both English and French -- this will be your choice. [Always give credit if a name appears, please] The following site is in provinces, and on every newspaper there should be "Contact" or "Letters to the Editor" Canadian Newspapers http://www.onlinenewspapers.com/canada.htm The letter may be as long as you desire -- editors are known to shorten items to save space in the newspaper. You must give YOUR complete address or the item will not be printed -- however, you may request your address not be used -- privacy laws!! Your phone number should be given - not for publication -- and mailed Letters to the Editor should have a written signature. We desire petitions for Senate, House of Commons and Non-Resident with downloadable petitions available from the site above. However, this poses a problem if the reader does not have a computer!! Should any person willing to write to his or her newspaper, try reading the printed letters to learn the approved style -- newspapers are different! The first paragraphs should contain the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHY, WHERE, and HOW -- always give the main subjects in the first two or three paragraphs -- subjects could be:- 1. Non-restrictive release of the 1911 and later Canadian census records 2. Petitions for release of 1911 and later census records 3. Letters to elected Members of Parliament in Canada -- their view http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index6.htm 4. Letters to appointed Senators http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Senscore1.htm Please contact either Gordon or myself if you desire help -- privately!!! I would enjoy reading any Letter to the Editor which has been sent. Let's spread the news of the non-release of the 1911 census records!! Muriel M. http://news.scotsman.com/latest.cfm?id=3275333 The news report was given in a July, 2004 newspaper and might be of concern to Americans. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~guys/map.html To all:- One of our Canada Census Committee members posted a "gift" to me this morning -- the above link!! My husband is from Ecum Secum, with other relatives/ancestors from Necum Teuch, Newdy Quoddy, Liscombe, Sherbrooke, Marie Joseph. Patty Lumsden is co-ordinator of the Guysborough County GenWeb Project and has an excellent site with other contributors. Census records are there for 1817 -- which could include Loyalists, and one is able to access the 1901 census online index. Above all -- the terrific link to our present fight for 1911 and later census records is one of the best I have viewed. At the top of the opening page is a map, then a place to send an email to Patty Lumsden, followed by Barney Kaufman's logo and the following =========== Statistics Canada, the agency charged with the responsibility of collecting the Census of Canada every five years, has taken the position that no public access will be allowed to individual Census records taken after 1901. They have refused to transfer control of these records to the National Archives which would then permit the National Archivist to allow public access to them 92 years after collection. Their position is that the release of individual census records is explicitly prohibited by law for all censuses following 1901. This position is based on a series of legal opinions obtained from Justice Canada from 1981 through 1985...... Read more about this serious prohibition to future census access and Find out how you can help - Post 1901 Census Campaign [The above looks better on the opening page!] Many may have wondered WHERE my husband was born -- now there is a map to prove there is an Ecum Secum!! Hello Nat:- I have thoroughly checked your site and it is strong and tells it "like it is". I know the area and I know what you mean when the area could become a way from one place to Halifax. You certainly have had the experience -- and I wish you sincere luck in your campaign -- you have worked hard and deserve it -- not everyone except you, as a teenager, would hold up a development because graves had been found. Wonder if Mike Savage would like your website???? It seems I have a small protest in Ontario -- but the scoreboard tells the truth. Best of luck, Muriel ----- Original Message ----- Muriel, I thought that you might enjoy my Campaign Website.. take a look and let me know what you think www.natsmith.ca Nat
