    1. Post-1901 Census -- Please Gather Signatures but Read Instructions First
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all readers:- Parliament will soon be opening -- on October 4th -- so we have been hoping to have as many as possible petitions for release of the 1911 (and later) census records. Go to http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/ You will find INSTRUCTIONS and downloadable PETITIONS. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat, it is available at this site - free. The Instructions are very simple but important. The petitions for the House of Commons and Senate of Canada are for CANADIANS to sign. The NON-RESIDENT petition is for all other petition signers. All petitions may be signed again even if one has signed prior to June, 2004 -- these are NEW petitions so use any old ones for scrap paper. In Canada, a person may sign both petitions. End of lecture!!! To date, but not tabulated as yet, are the following numbrs:- House of Commons -- to Gordon Watts == 87 Senate of Canada == 852 Non-Resident == 265 A note from Stewart Green, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa:- "Attached please find my petition for public access to Canada's historic census records. I am signing this petition because my grandfather lived in British Columbia in the 1910's and 1920's and access to post-1901 census data will assist me greatly in researching my family history. I would like to thank the post 1901 census project for the work they have done and wish you all the best in your endeavour. Signed -- Stewart C. Green. These type of notes act as adrenalin to us -- they keep us "charged"! Just keep census petitions being signed in all available places, please. NOT NOTES on census petitions -- a sticky note will do!! 1. Fabry's Disease
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. Hello Audrey:- As a former Nova Scotian, I like the Chester-area -- my home was near and in Liverpool, not too many miles away. You will note that I have found many Genetically Inherited Diseases in my personal family -- I am the one who keeps the card file stating WHO has WHAT at any certain time. We tried at that time, but failed to obtain release of the Post 1901 census records, so have kept on trying. Tancook Island was a perfect place for the research - unknown to many. Muriel M. Davidson ----- Original Message ----- From: Audrey Ogilvie To: muriel_davidson@sympatico.ca Sent: Monday, September 20, 2004 8:01 PM Subject: Re: [CCC] Fabry's Disease Dear Muriel, Common sense dictates that we must know everything possible about our individual genetic loads - both physiological and psychological. I believe the post 1901 census records will be of immense help to many people, and family health histories top the list of reasons why these records must be released and made available to everyone interested in having them. My family has a house in Chester, Nova Scotia and a late next door neighbour, Dr. E.K. Woodroofe, looked after many of the Tancookers suffering from Fabry's Disease. I can remember when some of the people were sent to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal for evaluation. Given that its occurence seems to be limited to very specific small pockets (for reasons that may not be known at this time), it's essential that everyone with roots on that island be aware of what may be lurking in their DNA. As you well know, we are predisposed to far more than blue eyes or long legs. Your committee is to be commended for the ! extraordinary amount of work that's been done over a long period of time and for having the tenacity it takes to move a bureaucratic mountain. If you think this should be posted to the list, please go ahead. Best wishes, Audrey Ogilvie -------Original Message------- From: Muriel M. 3. To Ms. Joy Smith, MP Kildonan--St. Paul riding My last two evenings have been spent watching and listening to the Ontario Conservative Leader's Convention in Toronto -- my choice, John Tory, received the most votes. You may have been told you only respond to people from your own riding -- whenever you vote, and whatever reply you give, you are acting on behalf of the people of Canada. As a new Member of Parliament, possibly you are not aware we have been struggling to have the Canadian Post-1901 Census Records released to History and Archives Canada from the Chief Statistician -- this struggle has gone on since March 1999. To date, we received the 1906 census of three provinces five years late - 2003. Your personal scoreboard is posted at http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Score2.htm#MB You will note we use coloured symbols to denote agreement to release, and we sincerely hope your reply is a positive -- unrestricted access to 1911 and later census records. The Conservative Party leaders are in full agreement that the records be released -- these hopefully might list names of many unidentified Home Children and also the 1911 census records before Canadians left for WWI, some of whom did not return. Further information is available at the following:- http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/index.htm http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~downhome/post1901census.htm Looking forward to receiving a positive reply from you, Muriel M. 1. Post 1901 Census - A new Gold Tick
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. A new Gold Tick of support has been added to the MPs Scoreboard. Newly elected MP Nina Grewal sent the following supportive letter in response to the letter I sent to all 308 Members of Parliament. Happy Hunting Gordon A. Watts gordon_watts@telus.net Co-chair Canada Census Committee Port Coquitlam, BC http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census en francais http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index_f Permission to forward without notice is granted Ottawa September 14, 2004 Mr. Gordon A. Watts Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee 1455 Delia Drive Port Coquitlam, BC V3C 2V9 Dear Mr. Watts Thank you for your letter expressing support for the release of post-1901 Census records. I appreciate knowing your views on this issue and am pleased to be given the opportunity of providing you with our position. The Conservative Party of Canada supports the preservation of Census records and the subsequent transfer of these records to the National Archives for public release. We believe the historical 92-year period is an adequate length of time, and that this is generally consistent with the practice in Britain and the Unites States, where records are kept confidential for 100 and 72 years respectively. However, the Conservative Party of Canada will not be supporting the Census legislation proposed in Bill S-13 should it be reintroduced in this Parliament. That legislation will allow limited access to "tombstone" Census information after 92 years. Full access to Census records will only be allowed after 112 years. We believe the proposed legislation further complicates matters by allowing access after 92 years to only designated individuals. The designation process will result in a complicated bureaucreacy, added costs and the question of who will police the Census. Thank you again for taking the time to write and express your views on this issue. Yours sincerely, Nina Grewal, M.P. Fleetwood-Port Kells

    3. To the Rt. Hon. Paul Martin, Prime Minister and the Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh, Minister of Health Canadians from coast to coast watched televisions and read every news article available as the health care monetary facts were "ironed out" in long discussions. We are sincerely thankful for the work accomplished, but has one detail been overlooked: Ambulances arrive at the hospitals, but the very ill and dying must wait "in line" on the ambulances, rather than have quick admisstance. However, I feel this will be taken care of -- it is serious!! Please check the following scoreboards -- we like GOLD http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Score1.htm#BC It would be great to remove one Blue ? -- the Minister of Health should have a GOLD symbol -- a personal note will have this colour changed if you agree census records should be released to us. I know, by personal experience, that genetics are very important and could lessen health costs. As Prime Minister, Mr. Martin, we hope you set an example and state you are positive about census release -- if only for health reasons and for your family history http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Score4.htm#PQ Personally, I feel you, as Prime Minister, should set an example. Download petitions -- use Non Resident and mail to my address http://www.globalgenealogy.com.com/Census/index.htm On a personal note, do any readers have family history about John Davis, a merchant shipper, or his wife, Lady Jane MacKenzie? They were the parents of my maternal gr.grandfather, James MacKenzie Davis -- who migrated to my hometown, Liverpool, Nova Scotia. I would dearly love to learn more about Lady Jane -- there is absolutely no information in DeBrett's Peerage and other sources -- believe me, the names were carried on as middle names for two of my aunts. Back to the Canadian census -- there is a colourful logo at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~downhome/post1901census.htm On my personal webpage, I click on the logo and the page pops up!! 2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- A large envelope arrived today -- and these always hold surprises!! Inside were two signed petitions, 47 signatures on each one, for the Senate of Canada and the House of Commons. [Gordon and I exchange petitions -- mine are for the Senate and go to Senator Lorna Milne]. Very possibly, by the time Parliamentary sessions begin October 4, we will be able to announce the House of Commons counterpart to Senator Lorna Milne, a staunch fighter for us since 1999. The signatures were collected at the September meeting of the Simcoe County Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. Many thanks, Rita!! Which genealogical society will top this number -- when signing, a person may sign both the Senate and House of Commons petitions, regardless of the ones previously signed. 2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. This morning I received a message from John M. Reid, Information Commissioner of Canada. He indicated that he anticipates signing his findings regarding our complaints against Statistics Canada next week. He indicated that there were over 90 complaints, and that while there were similarities, there were also differences to be dealt with in each finding. He gave no indication regarding what those responses would contain. He felt that by the end of next week they will be in the mail. As when we encouraged ATI requests to Statistics Canada and then complaints to the Information Commissioner to be made, it would be appreciated if you would send me copies of Mr. Reid's responses when you receive them. 1.

There is a song about the end of summer (and other things) with the line "Where have all the flowers gone?". For the past few days I have been humming the melody of this song but have changed the words to "Where are all the signatures?". For those of you who have been collecting signatures on our new petitions and waiting until you managed to get "just one more" -- now is the time to send what you have to us! (Send what you have already and then start a nice fresh clean petition page and continue collecting.) For those who have not yet collected any signatures -- what is holding you back??? If we want to regain the access to Historic Census records that the Chief Statistician continues to refuse us we must be prepared to put in a little effort. Parliament is scheduled to resume sitting on 4 October 2004 -- slightly more than two weeks from now. We want to have our petitions presented to the Senate and the House of Commons as soon after that as possible. It takes time, however, to collate those petitions sent to us and to send them to our 'champions' in the Senate and House of Commons. It then takes time for government scrutineers to check to make sure the petitions meet all the government rules before they can be presented in their respective Houses. It is expected that Senator Lorna Milne will continue to be our 'champion' in the Senate. We have yet to choose a 'champion' in the House of Commons to replace Murray Calder who did not retain his seat in the past election. A number of candidates are being considered and we will let you know when a decision has been made. In summary: -- we need petitions collected to date to be sent to us NOW! -- we need you to continue to collect signatures for future submission. We will continue to collect signatures until it is felt they are no longer needed. They will be submitted periodically as we receive suficient signatures to make it worthwhile. -- more than 62,000 signatures were collected on our original petitions. We would like to exceed that number, and in a much shorter time period, on our new petitions. Those who signed the original petitions are now eligible to sign the new petitons. Because they are directed to different places, people may sign BOTH the petition to the House of Commons AND the one to the Senate. -- Non-Resident petitions and petitions for the Senate are to be sent to Muriel M. Davidson. Petitions for the House of Commons are to be sent to Gordon A. Watts. Addressing information is on the same page of the Post 1901 Census Project website from which the petitons are downloaded. Please read the Instructions for Petitions on the same page. Both Mr. Mark and Ms. Yelich have previously indicated their support and have gold ticks on the MPs Scoreboard. Happy Hunting. Gordon ========================== OTTAWA, 9 September, 2004 Gordon A. Watts Co-Chair Canada Census Committee 1455 Delia Dr. Port Coquitlam, BC V3C 2V9 Dear Mr. Watts: Thank you for your letter expressing support for the release of post-1901 census records. I appreciate knowing your views on this issue and am pleased to be given the opportunity of providing you with my position. I support the preservation of census records, and the subsequent transfer of these records to the National Archives for public release. I believe that keeping the records confidential for the historical 92-year period is an adequate length of time, and that this is generally consistent with the practice in Britain and the United States, where records are kept confidential for 100 and 72 years respectively. In respect to the seeking of a government Bill that would add the clause yhou propose, you may want to contact your own Member of Parliament to put forth a Private Member's Bill that would see changes to the Statistics Act. Any member can put forth this type of legislation and it would therefore not be contingent on the governing pary's inclinations. Thank you again for your correspondence. I trust that I have fully answered your questions. Sincerely, Inky Mark, M.P. Dauphin-Swan River-Marquette

    3. Greetings All. The URL for the website follows my signature. Thank you all for your support. With your help we WILL achieve our goal. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 1. Post-1901 Census -- A Terrific Number of Signatures

    3. To all:- A very large envelope from Nanaimo, BC with 66 signatures for the Senate of Canada was received today. -- Many, many thanks!!! I prefer not to give the name of the one sending the signatures to me -- unless it is a genealogical society. No e-mail address was received so if anyone knows the sender, please thank the person. Check in on the following site and download http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/ Petitions are available in three "flavours" -- Senate of Canada, House of Commons and Non-Resident. Gordon Watts receives the House of Commons petitions. I receive the Senate and Non-Resident -- so far the latter have the largest number -- also for the Senate of Canada. When mailing, save the LARGE envelopes for writing to our elected or appointed ones in Ottawa -- do not worry about folding petitions -- I have been known to flatten these with the well-known cement block!!! [Just a trick!] With the possibility of a new bill when Parliament resumes, we need all the signatures everyone can gather. Should anyone have signed previously, everyone may sign again as all previous petitions went into File 13 (the garbage) when Parliament was prorogued. Should anyone have questions, please ask me. Also this message may be forwarded -- has only been posted to the British Columbia and Census lists. Muriel M.
