Jane Stewart of Human Resources had a huge database on all Canadians, dead or alive. Mr. John Bryden, MP, presently has Bill C-206 before the House of Commons -- he had to change some of it -- and I am waiting to receive the changes. We all want to know what Jane Stewart has about us -- when we cannot access the 1911 Canadian census records. Mr. Murray Calder's office phoned early this morning with great news . It does not matter if you do or do not hold a Public Library card. Go to Information at the nearest large library, ask for the forms. Complete and mail -- address is on the form. Brampton Public Library has these forms, as does Orangeville, a smaller community. Wish all luck in finding out what the government knows about us! Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com>

    3. The following message has been received from Gwen Christie with much thanks -- it sounds like an interesting program and I will be certain to take notes. Cancer never quite leaves the family -- my grandson told me today he is studying Genetics and related subjects -- at Waterloo. He is already working on one project for me, so I will send him an email about this program. Many thanks, Gwen -- more dieases coming every day!! Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> Hi Muriel: Just in case you didn't see the National tonight on the CBC, at the end of the Magazine they announced an upcoming program (possibly tomorrow night) would be about a 100 year old lady named Jessie who is in good health but watching younger members of her family get cancer with all its ramifications. They plan to speak about genetics, asking many questions, etc. Thought you might want to watch it as it seemed to fit in with your collection of data re medical problems in families. By the way, you may have to watch it on CBC Newsworld as the main station will be broadcasting a hockey game. Gwen Christie

    1. [CCC-L] Trying to trace my Gt Grandfather!
    2. Ann McClean
    3. I am staggered to read what is proposed in Canada regarding post 1901 censuses. I am trying to trace my Great-Grandfather, Walter SCOTT. He was born in Christchurch, Cambridgeshire, U.K. in 1868 to John & Hannah SCOTT. He had a brother Frederick and a sister, Emily. Walter left for Canada 1901 onwards. Where he sailed from, where he dis-embarked and where he settled I do not know, as I have only just found out about him! I have had an awful lot of help from people on the individual Province's Mailing Lists, but no sign of him yet. But how come I (and you) can have free access to Land Grants and other info, but the Government thinks we shouldn't have access to the Census?! By my reckoning, I should be able to trace my Gt Grandfather on the 1911 census and find out if he had a new family - perhaps more new cousins just like the newly-discovered branch of my father's family in Australia! The following striking and outstanding declaration is presented by Wayne Cook at <http://www.waynecook.com/simcoe.shtml> THE MYTHS OF CENSUS by Gordon Watts has been mentioned before, but now we suggest you read MEMORANDUM OF LAW by Lois Sparling. Happy reading~ Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> HAS CANADA LOST ITS CENSUS It is time to settle this now! F. Scott Fitzgerald once said, "The test of a first rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposing ideas in one's mind at the same time". YOU BE THE JUDGE The Wrong Road Bruce Phillips, the Privacy Commissioner would like to close the barn door on genealogical and historical research. The Honourable Senator Lowell Murray stands up in the Senate and says "To Hell with Historians". The Right Road Gordon Watts has spent hundreds of hours doing research to complete his very impressive submission to the Expert Panel on Access to Historical Census Records. Lois Sparling is a Barrister & Solicitor in Alberta, Canada. 2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. Hello Muriel ~~ This is the update on my search for other family. Yes there is hope.... The last time I sent you a note it was to say that I had indeed found my uncle & yes he was very much dead. Well with the help of a wonderful person at the Public Trustee's office I now know I have two new first cousins. The PT office is snail mailing them to give them my name & phone number. Now maybe I can find out all the answers, or at least some more details on them. I am also going to try to get immigration papers on my grand parents. No matter how long or how difficult, DON'T EVER GIVE UP LOOKING. A "special thank you" to Muriel, for all the time you have spent listening. My search is far from over but now I have a new beginning. Take care, Heather Evans

I posted all my grandmother's maiden names up to my g.g.grandmother & got a reply the next day giving me information on what turned out to be that we had the same g.g.grandmother. I wrote back giving what info I had & one piece was that Sarah had been deaf from birth. It turned out that the other person had not known this and that I had solved a mystery. She told me her son had no hearing in one ear and only 40% in the other,a cousin has hearing problems, & 2 other cousins have children with hearing problems, one of whom has also been deaf since early childhood. She said she had always wondered if it was heredity and that now she knows it is for sure. Just thought I would pass this on as a matter of interest. Doris from British Columbia

    3. Oh how I wished I could visit one of Canada's Members of Parliament, but I doubt he/she would give this United States person the time of day :(. But, let them know there are a lot of current US citizens who have roots deep into early Canada and we would love to be able to have access to the Canadian Census, including the 1911 some day. We would love to be able to trace for our missing cousins. It is very hard to get records from Canada as the laws vary so much. I did enjoy so much my trip last year to Canada. Everyone was so nice and the city of London and the towns of Dorchester and Nilestown clean and beautiful. Still can't figure out why my family ever left Canada. 3. To all:- I first learned about the possible non-release while in Nova Scotia several years ago. Much of my work has been verified by census records, as far back as 1791 when only the head of the household was mentioned. Should ANYONE not believe this is a real problem, please check the following -- the possibility of non-release is REAL. <http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/7843/poll.html> Read THE MYTHS OF CENSUS by Gordon Watts. 1. [CCC-L] French Language Memos Needed for MPs & Newspapers
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. The following is a recent message sent to me:- I appreciate all you and Gordon Watts plus others have done to support and document reasons the census records should be released. I do think it would enhance our campaign to MP's if someone could draft a short French or bilingual message that we could send to the francophone MPs in Quebec, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. There are a lot of these members and we need them as supporters if the issue comes to a vote in the House of Commons. As a resident of Ottawa I know the importance of bilingualism and we could lose the support of francophone MPs if we send them English-only letters. Are there any genealogists in Quebec who could help by giving us a French message? ============================ To all:- I agree with the above message, have asked one of the committee members to date -- but no reply. We need a two or three paragraph message (with English translation) about the need to have the post-1901 census records released. The same message could be sent to the French language newspapers thus reaching many not on internet. Check the following URLs for information re census, please. Muriel M. 1. [CCC-L] Government Keeps Detailed Database on You and I
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. Hello Folks, There was a brief article in the Halifax Daily News recently (via the Canadian Press, sorry I don't have a URL) regarding the Prvacy Commissioner's admission that our government keeps an extremely detailed database on each of us. Is the Commissioner's report available online? I am amazed that he has the gall to claim that the release of ninety year-old data could pose some kind of danger to the public while at the same time admitting to the existence of such a database. He is probably quite right in his belief that the average citizen would be angry to learn that this database exists, but he must not be allowed to link here- and-now privacy issues with government custodianship of historical data. If he gets the public riled up about which government records are available to whom and why our cause may be negatively affected. Once the media, and therefore the public, gets hold of an idea it is very difficult to modify or alter that idea. Unfortunately, many people do believe everything hear from media. Perhaps another round of letters to editors ASAP might be in order. 1. [CCC-L] Lunenburg County's Canadian Census Campaign
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:-- There is a real danger that, unless strong action is taken, it will be impossible for Canadians to ever have access to any more Canadian Census information. THERE MAY NEVER BE ANOTHER CENSUS RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC In 1906 the revised law concerning the census put a new emphasis on privacy, therefore the 1906 Bill to stop release of all census information from the public eye. We feel that this is unfair to the Canadian public, genealogists and historians who use this information in tracing genetic diseases, and the settling of wills and estates, and with over 7.5 million Canadians engaged in the pursuit of their family heritage - this bill must be changed. WHAT WE CAN DO? Download and get friends and neighbours to sign the Census Petition to take whatever steps to amend this Statistics Act, to allow the release of Canadian Census, after a reasonable period of time, as approved by law. Send letters to YOUR Member of Parliament requesting that they support our cause. Get involved and put a Census Poll, Banner, Link, etc. on your own website. WRITE YOUR LOCAL NEWSPAPERS!!! GET THESE PETITIONS SIGNED AND DELIVERED... DON'T WAIT TILL THE LAST MINUTE. ====================================== Thanks, Bryan -- for writing the above!!! Have YOU visited this site recently??? Also, Barney Kaufman's stylized logo is available for YOUR web page -- I have it on mine and am proud of it being there! She kept insisting we would have to go through Access to Information to see what is in OUR personal files. I did this -- I learned how old I was, my mother was born in Maine, how many bank accounts I had, investments, pensions, and much more -- we even had a car and camper van plus more. We need EVERYONE to contact their Member of Parliament -- but first check to see if he/she has a GOLD tick, BLUE ? or RED X. 3. Hello Muriel Since you have such a good idea, let's take it all of the way. Why not get a counterpart in Australia and England? I have seen many inquires come from those two countries. Lets get them behind this movement. STAND AND BE COUNTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is what it is going to take to get the census released. Have a good week end Barbara ============================================ To all who have read the United Nations memo and OUR rights to have access to OUR census records, memos were requested to be sent to Barbara Marrs <bmarrs@uswest.net> and copy to me. We have truly gone INTERNATIONAL -- as the one who suggested this lives in Canada, Barbara is in United States. Is there anyone who will volunteer from Australia and England, and other countries -- ANY LANGUAGE with English translation will be accepted. Barbara has already received memos -- will save these to disk, then they will all be put together as one HUGE submission. As it is international, it will have to go to Senator Lorna Milne. Should anyone start a submission re Canadian Charter of Rights, that could go to House of Commons, if from Canadians. We all want the census records to research our families -- As Barbara said -- STAND UP AND BE COUNTED!!!! Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com>

    1. [CCC-L] United Nations and Rights of Nationality submission re: Post 1901 Censuses
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- How many readers, in all parts of the world, agree with the following as submitted to the Expert Panel? Read it before making up your mind, please, then see note at bottom. ================================================= Roslyn Griston April 30, 2000 Re: Post 1901 Census Release Dear Expert Panel While considering all the other documentation regarding the release of the Post 1901 Censuses. Please consider, I am a child of people listed on these censuses. I will be listed on censuses from 1953 onwards. I hereby give my permission to have census information regarding me and my minor children to be open to viewing by researchers in the future. My children have a right to know their heritage and nationality. We are descended from British roots. My four year old daughter also, has Ukrainian roots. You will be denying her, her heritage and ability to find her national origins if you choose to support the lock up or the destruction of the Post 1901 censuses. Her great grandparents and family came to Canada in the decade of the Great War. Her grandfather can not remember family details. The censuses will provide this information for her and her two half siblings. Would you deny my nationality of being Chinese, even if I were born in Canada? Certainly not, simply because you would be able to look at me and know my nation of origin identity. Because, I and my children are of Northern European descent does not mean we are not interested in our nation'(s) of origin. Nor should we be denied it. Nor should any other child of Northern European descent. The United Nations says I and my children have the right to our national identity. I am Canadian born, living in a multi cultural country. A country, often stated as a cultural mosiac. Are my children and I of the wrong part of the mosiac to have our inherited right of nationality protected? Would you deny a First Nations person the right to say they were a Canadian born, of the Cree or Sechelt or Huron nations? I believe the following two paragraphs could successfully be argued in court to return mine and others right to access information regarding our historic nation(s) of orgin. UNITED NATIONS Convention on the Rights of the Child Article 8 1. States Parties undertake to respect the right of the child to preserve his or her identity, including nationality, name and family relations as recognized by law without unlawful interference. 2. Where a child is illegally deprived of some or all of the elements of his or her identity, States Parties shall provide appropriate assistance and protection, with a view to re-establishing speedily his or her identity. I and my children have a right to know our nationality. It is part our cultural identity. Thank you for your time and consideration with this submission. Sincerely Roslyn Griston ================================================== If YOU agree with above, please forward a short paragraph, complete with your name and address, from not only Canada, but United States, to Barbara Marrs - address below.
