    1. [CCC-L] New Member of Parliament
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. Mr. Loyala Hearn (PC) is the new Member of Parliament for the riding of St. John's West, Newfoundland - replacing Charlie Power. Possibly his address will be:- Loyola Hearn : MP <Hearn.L@parl.gc.ca> Wonder what his views are re census release -- he squeaked in by a narrow majority, and we hope he earns a gold tick like Charlie Power had. Should we ALL send him GREETINGS from the Canadian Census Release Committee???? Sounds neighbourly!!! At the same time, ask him about Access to Information -- we like to know how the elected ones think! Muriel M. 3. Hello Everyone, I just thought I would pass this along. Today in France the Unknown Soldier begins his journey home. On Sunday he will be interned in Ottawa with soil from each of the Provinces and Territories. The Minister of Veterans Affairs gave a very good speech at the Vimy Memorial including this line IT IS THE BIRTHRIGHT OF OUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN TO KNOW THEIR HISTORY The whole speech is on the Veterans Affairs web site. I for one think that if that soldier and all his fallen comrades, no matter what the war, could give their lives for our freedom, we should fight on to get the census released no matter what so that they are never forgotten. Newsworld will be covering the ceremony in Ottawa on Sunday, I will be watching and remebering all the members of my family and my husband family who served, and especially my great uncle John Henry Barnes who died November 2 1918, I won't forget no matter how much Mr. Phillips would like me to. Forgive me if I am morbid but my Dad served in World War two, he died 7 years ago and I miss him so much Jacquie Nex Sooke, British Columbia jacnex@home.com

    3. i know that once i read that mr. phillips was an ombudsman..i went pffffft..another useless and powerless voice who appears to be acting in the best interest of the ppl he serves..sorry folks, i have yet to achieve satisfaction from b.c.'s ombudsman's office and have even taught them a thing or two regarding legislation when they have told me there is no higher appeal..btw has anyone thought of going to our governor general or even to the queen. although, both of the above ppl are mostly figure heads rolled out for dramatic effect during state events..their support regarding this issue would be a great plus. consider, that if queen victoria was not immune to having details of her household published in the british census..and in 2001..again we will get to see all who were living in queen victoria's home..hell..if its okay for a queen's private details to be published..why not the rest of us common folk. oh and shut your eyes..mustn't see that the imfamous mr. brown is living at the castle too. 1881 british census details. Subject: Submission concerning Genetically inherited diseases Date: Thu, 25 May 2000 07:48:02 -0400 From: Expert Panel <fe-expertpanel@statcan.ca> To: "Muriel Davidson (E-mail)" <davidson3542@home.com> I would like to apologize for the delay in acknowledging your submission to the Expert Panel. We have indeed received your submission concerning genetically inherited diseases. The copies of the report were presented to the members of the Expert Panel at their May 1st, 2000 meeting Thank you for taking the time to make your views known. Dr. Pamela White Secretariat/Secrétariat Expert Panel on Access to Historical Census Records/ Comité d'experts sur l'accès aux dossiers historiques du recensement ==================================================== I had to phone Ottawa, ask a few questions as I felt the submission sent by myself and others whose notes were included, was very important. I have written back to Dr. Pamela White, assured her many more unknown diseases have been made known to me. An offer was made, should she desire them, that I would forward. I also let her know that many memos have been received about babies being adopted -- I personally believe each baby when placed should be complete with at least two generations of medical history, blood types -- not names of adopting parents. This would save much heartache in the future. Muriel <davidson3542@home.com>

    1. [CCC-L] Genetically Inherited Diseases -- One Family
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. Hi Muriel I am from Mass., my family on both my mother's and father's side have Canadian roots- Nova Scotia and Quebec. My husband has basically the same heritage. I read your attachment and only wish I had nearly so much to go on! My mothers genealoghy has been researched all the way to the French records burning. Her Acadian roots show the first couple known to carry the recessive gene for Tryrosinemia. I read that in Quebec all children are tested for this at birth. My cousin has PKU- also a recessive gene. My family is the one they base the movie of the week on- at least it seems so. My mother has had cancer four times, had her first heart attack at 46, has a very long history of medical problems. Similar problems in her siblings. My real concern, however, is my daughter (26 years old today) has what appears to be Cystic Fibrosis although the sweat test is in the gray zone. She responds well to the treatment and is followed at a CF clinic. However it took until she was 17 for someone to look past the not quite positive test and to treat her. She has been tested for the 70 common mutations (there are over 800) with no match. The conclusion I have come to is that my husband's family and mine come from close areas and we could carry the same rare gene thus our daughter might have inherited 2 of the same rare mutation. When reviewing what I do see in the family I find the expected childhood and early adulthood deaths - but I suspect we have more than is typical on my father's side. My father's sister died while a baby from what might have been CF- there was no diagnosis in the 1920's. His brother adopted his children (CF men are 98% infertile), died early of pancreatitis and pneumonia and had a lifetime of severe lung problems. CF carriers are being found to have some of the symptoms. Of note is sinus problems and pancreas issues. My paternal grandfather died young of pancreatitis, another paternal uncle died from pancreatic cancer. My grandfather was Angus Bernard McDonald although he insisted his name was Bernard Angus MACDonald. The MAC was always stressed. We thought he had 2 sisters. We knew he was raised near Boston and one sister raised in Boston. We learned in 1978 that Angus was one of 7 children. He and his sister were taken to the USA when the mother died. Where did the other children go? I have the sponsors of all the children, their names, their grandmother's maiden name (LAHEY give or take some vowels in spelling), her siblings names and birth place and dates ( Millbury Ma for 5 kids, and then Pictou), the grandparents names and grandmothers maiden name on the MC/MAC D side (Cooney) as well as all the aunts and uncles and birth dates. Beyond this everyone has disappeared. My younger daughter had a sickness between 5 and 6 where she was hospitalized and her liver tests were "off." She had another incident at age 9. She had surgery at 14 and we almost lost her to severe complications; she was an inpatient for 2 months and the problems linger 8 years later. She had another ilness at 16 with some liver enlargement and a dangerously low white cell count of 2. Several months later she had severe fulminent hepatits (not due to any of the infectious types of hepatitis.) She followed a pattern for a herititary disease called Wilson's and had positive lab work for this. However, she was so sick she was not clotting her blood and the conclusive test for Wilson's is a liver biopsy that could not be done for a few months. She was negative for the biopsy. Now the CF medical doctor has suggested both girls have the same genetic problem. I see no need to adding biologically to this family line more sick children if we could document this is truly a genetic problem. My two cousins both lost little boys about 15 and 16 years ago. Both were newborns, one died of pnemonia. The mother of one of these little boys had extremely severe asthma (CF?) and was on massive doses of steroids. She contracted a rare form of lymphoma at age 42 and died a couple months later. She had Burkitts Lymphoma, rare in America. I wonder if the steroids reduced her immune system allowing her to contract this viral type of cancer. We have lots of weird health problems and I would so much like to get a "feel" for the family history--if only I could find it! If we do have CF then there could be others in the extended family who have been diagnosed and they would likely have one of the more common mutations as well as a rare gene. Canada will also in some cases test for the rare genes. So that is my story. I do have another question- how do you research the names that Morgan posts? They pop up as Email addresses. Are we to write to the email and request their info? I posted a request to this list about anyone researching my family line- does this mean Morgan automatically includes my names in his data? Probably all in the FAQs? We do not have any MS but I know several people dealing with this dread disease. Awful how it strikes in ones prime. I have been checked due to some visual symptoms but I was told I do not have it. Good luck with your own research and thanks for answering my question, Ginny [ginnyg <macd428@mediaone.net> ======================================== Hi Ginny:- Sincerely hope you have an up-to-date card file -- very important. Your family has many diseases -- keep smiling -- often hard to do! As for Morgan -- I am unfamiliar with this name and any site. Hopefully a reader will be able to assist. 2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. Muriel, our son-in-law with Parkinson's was born in 1967. He is a very gifted musician, only 32. He was adopted so he doesn't know about the inheriting part. I do not ever remember people so young getting it!!My grandfather and his brother each had a son that had it. (the Parkinson's was in my mother's family RAMEY, but could have been in the MCCANN or HENDRICK great-grandmother's family) or before. Josephine Turner Bryant Mobile, Alabama, USA ================================= Many thanks for writing, Josephine! I do not know whether people are getting these diseases at an earlier age -- or if the diagnosis procedures are more accurate. Hopefully, it is the latter -- not the early ages. As for adoption, each child should come complete with at least two generations of possible inheritable diseases and blood types -- not names of parents or locality. Senator Lorna Milne is pushing for this in her petitions to free our post-1901 census records. Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com>

    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. Hi. I most heartily agree with your letter. I tried to make that point when I wrote to my Member of Parliament, Mr. Jay Hill, though I am not nearly as coherent a writer as you. Myself, I am half French, and the other half is half English and half German (I believe there is also a few natives thrown in for good measure). Without census records to pore through, there would be no earthly way for me to do any meaningful research. By the way Muriel, my son died of Leukemia back in 1969, and I recently discovered that my Grandmother died of Leukemia as well, though not the same type. Anyway, you can put me down as being in complete agreement with you! Jack Herbert Box 323 Taylor Point, BC <coraliehebert@hotmail.com> ====================================== The United Nation submission was started by Roslyn Griston, also of British Columbia. Barbara Marrs and I are both accepting letters from those in agreement with Roz Griston! Many thanks, Jack, and I am sorry to learn about your son -- it is small comfort to know his great-grandmother also had the same disease. Muriel <davidson3542@home.com>

    3. Hello Muriel, Just sent this to the PBS email. http://www.pbs.org/kbyu/ancestors/newseries/ Hello, Your site just came through a genealogy mailing list with the URL listed above. Hunting for missing and/or disappearing ancestors can be an enormous chore and challenge. Using "family stories, rumors and tall tales" to start a search for a phantom is sometimes a strange ordeal which may lead into having to search government documents......like military police records. What should a person do if such records are not forthcoming, but yet the records you are hunting for are at least or almost 75 years old? Shouldn't family members have a right to investigate those kinds of records to find out just what happened to the disappearing relative? I think so. Just how far does the US Freedom of Information Act go? Sincerely, Jacquie Baral Jacqueline Baral <jacquiebaral@earthlink.net> ============================================= Many thanks, Jacquie! We have many Home and Bernardo Children looking for families -- the only way is through census and other government held records. Muriel Davidson <davidson3542@home.com>

    3. I have sent several E-mails to the Winnipeg Free Press and also to the Winnipeg Sun, the last ones addressed to the Editors. I gave them Muriel's E mail address, also the site address. I have never seen anything in the Winnipeg Free Press regarding the Post 1901 Census, or all future census being destroyed, etc, etc. I do not subscribe to the Sun, but never received a reply from either paper. I don't understand why the newspapers are so slow on the take-up. It is the right of the public to know what is happening re the census, and I said this in my email to each editor. j gambrel

    3. To all: I checked out the URL -- really looking forward to this series, and hopefully times and channels will be announced - keep us posted!! There are so many looking for their "lost" family members, the program might give some hints re researching the unknown members. Many thanks, Adele -- we welcome your input! Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> Canadian Census Committee member =============================== Another good reason to release the Post 1901 Census is because of the increased interest in genealogy. "Ancestors" is a NEW 10 hour series that PBS (TV) will be showing June 2000 because their first hour show was SO POPULAR. 1. [CCC-L] Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Disease Research
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. THE FOLLOWING MAY BE COPIED -- Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> ============================================ [Copied from Parkinson's Disease site] MICHAEL J. FOX PUTS PARKINSON'S IN THE SPOTLIGHT On the heels of a strong cover story in the current edition of Newsweek and a powerful segment on ABC's "20-20" program Wednesday night, Parkinson's will remain in the media spotlight for a week or more as celebrity-spokesman Michael J. Fox continues his media tour celebrating the creation of the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's research. Here's what's in store for viewers and readers over the next several days: Monday through Wednesday, May 22-24 A three-part series on Good Morning America, ABC's morning show, will feature Mike Fox and his challenge. Monday, May 22 People magazine will feature Fox on its cover. The article will focus on his vision for the new foundation. Monday, May 22 Fox will be the guest of David Letterman (CBS). Tuesday, May 23 Fox appears on the Rosie O'Donnell show (ABC) Tuesday, May 23 Fox (with Joan Samuelson) will hold a news conference on Capitol Hill at 11 a.m. and later take center stage at the annual Udall awards dinner at the Washington Hilton and Towers Hotel. (Tickets, at $250 - it's a fund-raiser! - are still available; call 707-544-1994 for details). Wednesday, May 24 Fox's final appearance on Spin City, the NBC series that he created. The show will feature the Foundation's new public service announcement. Along with all everyone else who is hell-bent on ending this crippling condition for ever, the Parkinson's Disease Foundation salutes and applauds Mike's appearance as our leading spokesman. We are fully aware - as he is - of the power of celebrity in a media culture and of the enormous power it can bring both to raising awareness and understanding of Parkinson's disease and to building public support for the scientific research that alone can end it. We also understand the marvelous energy that will be created by the association between Mike Fox (the foundation's chairman) with Joan Samuelson (its president), our creative and gifted leader in the area of public advocacy for almost a decade. (For the record, Mike's new foundation is in fact a renamed and reconfigured version of the Parkinson's Action Network (PAN), the organization Joan created). We also recognize the risk that these developments may - if not properly managed - complicate the ability of the various organizations to work together in our common cause, whether in our work in Washington, our relations with private donors, our financial support of research or our service to the community of people who live with Parkinson's. We at the PDF pledge to do all we can to ensure that this management takes place and we have every confidence that we can count on our respected colleague organizations, including the Fox Foundation, to do likewise. ============================================ All Canadians salute Mike Fox -- now only 38, was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease about 10 years ago. Truly a great Canadian! There will be a web site available where donations may be made, but I could not access it. Are there any letters re Parkinson's Disease to add to Genetically Inherited diseases? If not, will copy from the internet tomorrow. Others with this affliction are Janet Reno, diagnosed in 1995 and Pope John Paul -- plus many others. Muriel M. 1. [CCC-L] Post 1901 Census Campaign Poster
    2. Sharon Sergeant
    3. Hello, Back in September, Brian Keddy provided an electronic version of a poster for our Boston States Migration fair where we also had petitions. Dave Dobson also provided a regular mail poster. Later,I brought those petitions to the Global Genalogy fair in Ontario where there was also a table for petiton signers. Next week NGS 2000 in Providence RI will be hosting a Society Fair night for genealogy societies to provide information about their resources. I will again have Post 1901 census posters and petitions. Others may view and print the electronic poster if you would like to do the same at other events http://bostonstates.rootsweb.com/Post1901CensusPoster.htm Please advise if you would like me to update posters or provide other info. I will not have the time or resources to make a large number of copies of materials. But if anyone would like to send me printed matter by regular mail, it must reach me by Tuesday May 30 for the Society Fair table. Otherwise, I would make it available at the NGS "freebie" table as NGS 2000 runs until Saturday June 3. thanks Sharon Sergeant http://bostonstates.rootsweb.com 48 Lake Street Waltham,MA 02451 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 1. [CCC-L] Plan to Visit YOUR MP in your Home Area
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- The elected Members of Parliament have another "vacation" of a week, due to Victoria Day weekend -- should be back in Ottawa by next Monday -- we hope! When your elected Member of Parliament is in his/her riding, we hope YOU will plan to visit YOUR Member - even if just to introduce yourself. Above all, you WOULD like to know any census thoughts. Go to <http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census> Check to see if YOUR Member of Parliament has a pretty GOLD tick mark (means YES), a RED "X" that means NO, or a BLUE QUESTION MARK. The blue question mark means he/she is undecided OR did not care enough to answer your letter. Your Member of Parliament works at your expense -- and for you --should he/she be in possession of a BLUE X, plan to visit! Prepare a letter as if you would be mailing it, complete with name of riding and any title. Either call the riding office to see when your MP is in the office -- or take a chance. By putting the letter (in an envelope) into his/her hand, preferably in front of witnesses, there will be no question the letter was not received. Above all, you would like to query your Member's view re census records release. Let us know of any happy outcome -- and should you receive a reply, we do not need the whole letter, just the part that tells YES, NO or otherwise. Gordon Watts is Keeper of the Scoreboard and needs this information (before any election). [The Scoreboard is out of date -- we need YOUR help!] A letter can be typed on a computer (save to disk), or by hand but let your Member of Parliament know YOU expect a positive response when there is mention of census release, also Access to Information Act, Bill C-206. Should you prefer to mail your letter, postage is FREE Name & Riding / House of Commons / Parliament Buildings / Ottawa, Ontario KIA OA6. Happy writing!!! Keep the petitions coming!!! Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> Brampton, Ontario Keep up to date on Post 1901 Census information at http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census and Read: THE MYTHS OF CENSUS by Gordon Watts - may be printed http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/7843/poll.html Download and circulate Post 1901 Census Petitions now from http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/petition.htm

    1. [CCC-L] United Nations and Rights of Nationality submission re: Post 1901 Censuses
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. THE FOLLOWING IS A COPY OF A PREVIOUS MEMO To all:- How many readers, in all parts of the world, agree with the following as submitted to the Expert Panel? Read it before making up your mind, please, then see note at bottom. ================================================= Roslyn Griston April 30, 2000 Re: Post 1901 Census Release Dear Expert Panel While considering all the other documentation regarding the release of the Post 1901 Censuses. Please consider, I am a child of people listed on these censuses. I will be listed on censuses from 1953 onwards. I hereby give my permission to have census information regarding me and my minor children to be open to viewing by researchers in the future. My children have a right to know their heritage and nationality. We are descended from British roots. My four year old daughter also, has Ukrainian roots. You will be denying her, her heritage and ability to find her national origins if you choose to support the lock up or the destruction of the Post 1901 censuses. Her great grandparents and family came to Canada in the decade of the Great War. Her grandfather can not remember family details. The censuses will provide this information for her and her two half siblings. Would you deny my nationality of being Chinese, even if I were born in Canada? Certainly not, simply because you would be able to look at me and know my nation of origin identity. Because, I and my children are of Northern European descent does not mean we are not interested in our nation'(s) of origin. Nor should we be denied it. Nor should any other child of Northern European descent. The United Nations says I and my children have the right to our national identity. I am Canadian born, living in a multi cultural country. A country, often stated as a cultural mosiac. Are my children and I of the wrong part of the mosiac to have our inherited right of nationality protected? Would you deny a First Nations person the right to say they were a Canadian born, of the Cree or Sechelt or Huron nations? I believe the following two paragraphs could successfully be argued in court to return mine and others right to access information regarding our historic nation(s) of orgin. UNITED NATIONS Convention on the Rights of the Child Article 8 1. States Parties undertake to respect the right of the child to preserve his or her identity, including nationality, name and family relations as recognized by law without unlawful interference. 2. Where a child is illegally deprived of some or all of the elements of his or her identity, States Parties shall provide appropriate assistance and protection, with a view to re-establishing speedily his or her identity. I and my children have a right to know our nationality. It is part our cultural identity. Thank you for your time and consideration with this submission. Sincerely Roslyn Griston ================================================== If YOU agree with above, please forward a short paragraph, complete with your name and address, from not only Canada, but United States, to Barbara Marrs - address below. We are hopeful of obtaining volunteers in Australia and other countries -- combined submission will then be forwarded to Senator Lorna Milne as it will be a multi-country submission. Please send your comments as requested to Barbara Marrs <bmarrs@uswest.net> Barbara lives in United States [copy may be sent to me as well] Many thanks in advance, Muriel M. 3. To all:- I have been concerned about my submission to the Expert Panel, as there was no mention of receiving the submission. Does anyone have an up-to-date e-mail address? I sincerely hope Genetically Inherited Diseases was received, and included in the coming report. Muriel M. Coats Building Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0T6 (613) 951-3255 E-mail: expert.panel_comite.experts@statscan.ca [Mail Returned -- copied from notification] May 23, 2000 To Members of the Expert Panel:- Prior to the submission deadline, FIVE (5) copies of a submission were mailed to your office, but to date no word has been received if you received the package. The submission, GENETICALLY INHERITED DISEASES, traced the family disease trail of many diseases, including one from my family, dating back to 1824. This was achieved by use of Canadian census records, coupled with other important papers on file. I am very anxious to know IF your committee received this submission. Genetically Inherited Diseases are important -- should you not have received this package of five copies, I will forward an attachment of the 20 pages from many people. The submission deals with Depression, Fabry's Disease, Alzheimer's, Multiple Sclerosis, Q-T Syndrome, Diabetes, plus many others. 2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. Dear Muriel, Thank you for your kind email of May 23rd. Bill C-206 comes up for second reading vote in June. There is a lot of behind-the-scenes lobbying against it, so it is going to be interesting to see if it survives. I will keep you posted. Yours sincerely, John Bryden ===================================================== To all:- Sincerely hope all are backing John Bryden <brydenmp@interlynx.net> as he pushes to get Bill C-206 passed on our behalf. Although John Bryden is a member of the Liberal party, after watching dialogue in the House of Commons on Cpac, it seems other members are against the passage of the Access to Information Bill C-206. Safe passage of this bill would assist with census records release -- are they afraid? Let us all bombard our Members of Parliament and see if (1) He/she agrees to census records release (2) He/she agrees to adoption of the Access to Information updates. Muriel M.
