Dear Mr. Casey, <Casey.B@parl.gc.ca> With recent revelations on how this government (and the one previous) sanctioned the compilation of dossiers on each and every citizen in this country to a level only rivaled by the former Soviet Union or Nazi Germany, it seems somewhat paradoxical that we are even entertaining the idea of blocking the release of census data after 92 years. Granted, the Expert Panel will be bringing down their report within days and this will sway Members' opinions. However, I would like to know just where MY elected MP stands on the matter. Hence the following question that only requires a simple yea or nay reply: "Would you, as an elected Member of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Canada, vote FOR or AGAINST a Bill supporting release to the Public, of Post 1901 Census Records, 92 years after they were recorded. ( 1911 census information available in 2003, 1921 in 2013 etc.)" Further, what is your opinion on private member Bill C-206? Lastly, I would appreciate knowing where I can obtain a copy of the Expert Panel's Report when it is tabled and released. Sincerely, Thomas G. Lynch 23 Pleasant St., #3 Truro, NS, B2N 3R7 cc hardcopy to Truro office.

To all:- One item is listed as a cartoon -- only because it is in the cartoon spot on the editorial page of The Halifax Herald -- my favorite paper!! The other item is "the story of the day" -- I would suggest this be printed or saved in some way -- you may wish to refer to it again. This story tells us what we can do about our personal data files AFTER June 30th, 2000. I am pleased this huge database is being dismantled - at last!! Read this Herald story very carefully -- also deals with photo I.D. Should you wish to return to The Halifax Herald, Back to main page, then bookmark....many have already done this. Muriel M. To all:- THIS MEMO MAY BE FORWARDED The great news today, first sent to me by Doug Joudrey, a fellow Census committee member, and then read on the front page of The Toronto Star, is that files about YOU and I are being dismantled. The Hon. Jane Stewart announced this yesterday about the huge database she had accumulated on over 30 million citizens. The information included marital status, education, even if caught by the police, income tax, investments - anything under our S.I.N. Even Mr. Bruce Phillips conceded it invaded OUR privacy. Over 18,000 requests have been received to date, will be processed and WE will be able to learn what her Human Resources department knew about us. Please remember -- this is not the CENSUS DEPARTMENT and we have yet to hear from the Expert Panel. Citizens of Canada, wishing to learn about themselves, have until June 30th, 2000 to file a request -- please keep a copy of what is sent to The Hon. Jane Stewart, HRDC. Your full name and address, plus your Social Insurance Number (as used in banks, etc.) must be on the request. The address, fax or telephone is listed below. Some time ago I learned how much money I had in the banks, the investments, I was married, had three children, we owned a car and a camper van, sold our house to our son 10 years ago -- plus other data -- also my mother was born in Maine. I will go on record as stating this database should never have been compiled, regardless of political party. Muriel M. To all:- As previously mentioned, there should be BLUE in the sky, not on the Scoreboard for Members of Parliament. Many are contacting their own Member of Parliament, asking his/her view and how their Member would vote on census release of the post-1901 records. We would also like to know their viewpoints re Access to Information Bill C-206. Some are contacting all BLUE and GREEN categories (right word?) Check <http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/index6.htm> >From surnames beginning with D to H, we have:- 44 with BLUE ???????? -- too many + 50 from A - C = 94 1 with RED X - Mr. Bill Gilmour GREEN pieces of fence:- R. Many thanks for writing, Beverly -- many are responding with action -- none of us wish to see the blue ????, but often we are able to understand the Undecided. With your letter, as soon as Gordon Watts gets near a computer other than his laptop, I know Peter Stoffer will have something other than a blue ?. I am formerly from Nova Scotia -- very interested in all Nova Scotian Members of Parliament, regardless of party. Many thanks, Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> =============================================== A positive scenario for a change, I did e-mail my Member of Parliament, Peter Stoffer, regarding the acquisition to Census material for legitimate research purposes as he was one of those "undecided or uncommitted" members. I explained how in my personal circumstances, my grandmother had little formal schooling and with nine youngsters, little time to spend on daily diaries or family genealogy in the early 1900s. Also, there are many tracking the genetic anomalies Ms. Davidson mentioned, and the vital statistics, while not clarifying what deaths were from, in the case of young children and infants, or premature births, can bring patterning to light in some lines. I was, therefore, delighted to have a phone call from Mr. Stoffer during his haitus from Parliament last weekend thanking me for my detailed reasons for resolving the issue in favor of leaving statistics available. He said at that time only one sitting MP was still holding the hard line on shutting things down at the last debate. I advised Mr. Stoffer I would be obtaining a copy Parliamentary records pertaining to the debate to verify how he presented the views of his constituents and himself. I did this once before. I seldom input to this list, but in fairness there are some politicians who do not buy a pair of earplugs with their first federal cheque and stop listening to those who elected them. ================= Click on <http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/index6.htm> Mail it to yourself so it is near at hand. LOIS SPARLING, a barrister and solicitor, from Alberta, Canada, has written and posted a very thought-provoking article re post-1901 census, our fight to have it released, the governmment's stand and viewpoints. Go to: <http://www.waynecook.com/simcoe.shtml> The lengthy article, with only one paragraph printed below, is found at <http://www.calcna.ab.ca/afhs/censuslaw.html> "Historians and genealogists study census returns for information about family groups, neighbourhoods and communities. It is the only primary source which places the individual in his or her family and community context. Historians and genealogists want the historic census returns to continue to be released to the public after a suitable period of secrecy, i.e., 92 years." Also available from the first site is Gordon Watts' THE MYTHS OF CENSUS. Muriel M. To all -- and it looks very good! <www.johnbrydenmp.com> This is Mr. John Bryden's own web page -- I had a phone call from his office, asking if I had received any addresses re Access to Information. {We have but the HRDC one is ????} I wanted a copy of his Bill C-206 as he was allowed to present it, but possibly Gordon Watts will find it on Hansard. When this is received it will be added to <http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/7843/poll.html> In the meantime, let's keep trying to get rid of the green FENCES and blue ????? by checking <http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/index6.htm> Do not bother with red X or gold ticks -- we know how they stand. Remember, the only BLUE should be in the sky -- not the scoreboard. Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com>
To all:- We have too many ELECTED (at present) Members of Parliament who have not bothered to answer questions asked of them by many who have let us know ALL elected ones had been questioned. Last summer I sent 301 letters, FREE postage, and received only 25 answers. Gordon Watts has contacted them several times, as had Rick Roberts of Global Genealogy. Now -- with a possible election pending -- it is up to the voters to ask IF he or she will vote in favor of opening the Post-1901 census records. Also, are they in favor of Access to Information Bill C-206 being passed. Recently, Genetically Inherited Diseases became a prime topic, Go to the archives and type in your search word(s) at http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/CAN/CANADA-CENSUS-CAMPAIGN.htm For those who are FENCE-SITTERS or have BLUE ??????, go to http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/index6.htm Adam, a former employee at Global Genealogy, set up the Scoreboard. When you let us know how your Member of Parliament responds, Gordon Watts updates the scoreboard -- we want it completed prior to a fall election. Adam included a handy "pop-up" for your e-mail. One lady (name withheld) did a mass blitz yesterday of all "fence sitters and blue question marks" Another reported she had sent memos to all Reform members in Alberta. I sent the list to myself, so it is open on my screen in a special memo. This keeps it handy -- even easier than bookmarking! Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/7843/poll.html
Many thanks, Sharon -- we sincerely hope our fight to obtain release of our census records is drawing to a close. To all:- The very moving ceremony held in Ottawa yesterday will remain with many of us for a very long time. Being a former Nova Scotian, I was moved to know soil from Nova Scotia was placed there -- identifiable by the Nova Scotian tartan. Extremely moving was the speech by our Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson - she spoke for all of us, I felt. Bottom line, Muriel, aren't these inherited diseases the most important reason to have census years available for researchers? No matter what the reason, census retention and accessability seems to be a closer goal than before. Hi Wayne:- Like many of us -- we are very anxiously awaiting the report. The House resumes May 30th -- they had their week off because of Victoria Day -- and the given deadline was May 31st. I am encouraged by one remark made by Dr. Pamela White: -- she was amazed at the number of letters I have received re diseases after I had submitted my Genetically Inherited Diseases submission to them. Re: Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Disease Research There has been several notes of complaint about diseases being published on the CENSUS list. If Genetically Inherited Diseases is the catalyst that opens the gate to the census records, we may be on the right track - also we like to know. Also - to date, the listowner has not complained -- we just want the post-1901 census records OPEN for US to use. Muriel M. FOX PUTS PARKINSON'S IN THE SPOTLIGHT On the heels of a strong cover story in the current edition of Newsweek and a powerful segment on ABC's "20-20" program Wednesday night, Parkinson's will remain in the media spotlight for a week or more as celebrity-spokesman Michael J. Fox continues his media tour celebrating the creation of the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's research. Appearances included:- Wednesday, May 24 Fox's final appearance on Spin City, the NBC series that he created. The show will feature the Foundation's new public service announcement. Along with all everyone else who is hell-bent on ending this crippling condition for ever, the Parkinson's Disease Foundation salutes and applauds Mike's appearance as our leading spokesman. We are fully aware - as he is - of the power of celebrity in a media culture and of the enormous power it can bring both to raising awareness and understanding of Parkinson's disease and to building public support for the scientific research that alone can end it. ============ All Canadians salute Mike Fox -- now only 38, was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease about 10 years ago. Since beginning my research I have been fortunate to obtain health information from burial certificates, etc. Any records that can help me with my search are very important to me. I have also found that I am related to my adoptive mother (cousins)...and am now researching for both health AND genealogical reasons.
