    1. [CCC-L] No Reports from Expert Panel
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- This afternoon, Bruce Phillips was being asked questions by a Senate committee -- it was all about Privacy, plus Statistics and Information Acts ----PLUS the fact Mr. Phillips will be leaving as Privacy Commissioner. I missed the first part of the talk on CPAC (Canadian Public Affairs Channel) but many spoke. Senator Lorna Milne was in her usual "fighting for us" mood, and there was discussion re census, length of time periods, dead or alive, and release of personal data. I will be in contact with Dr. Pamela White, Secretary of Expert Panel, and will ask where to locate wording of their report. These have been a bad few weeks with much concern re Hon. Jane Stewart and her huge databank about us. As soon as Gordon Watts or I find something, we will pass it on. Muriel <davidson3542@home.com>

    1. [CCC-L] Apologies re Access to Information Posting
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- I use the Drafts form, send postings back to myself until I FEEL they are suitable for printing -- until Rootsweb finds them!!! The very long posting re John Bryden's Bill C-206 ended up with split lines. To print, mail the posting to yourself -- Edit as New Delete all addresses except your own -- or type your email address in. Using your Delete and Enter keys, the length of the lines can be fixed so these will not split. If you need other information, ask me! The posting is long -- but it fully explains how there was NO STEALTH on the part of John Bryden MP.....he followed instructions!!! Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com>

    1. [CCC-L] Jason Kenney and M-160
    2. Gordon A. WATTS
    3. Greetings All. On arrival home from my trip I had on my phone messages one from the office of Jason Kenney informing me that the final hour of third reading of M-160 will take place on 7 June 2000. As this motion has been deemed votable it will be interesting to see how our MPs will vote on the motion which calls for the release of 1911 Census records as soon as possible after being placed in the control of the National Archives. Those with access to CPAC may find it interesting viewing. I have spent considerable time this evening searching the government websites for mention of the report of the Expert Panel. Nothing was found so I will be sending an email to StatsCan asking about it. Anything found out will be reported as soon as possible. Gordon

    1. [CCC-L] MP Murray Calder presents Private Members Bill on Post 1901 Census
    2. Gordon A. WATTS
    3. Greetings All. Arrived home from my trip this afternoon and spent most of the rest of the day catching up with e-mail and surfing the government websites. I found a number of interesting things in Hansard which I will be posting in the next couple of days. Not the least of these was the following extract from Hansard of 2 June 2000 for the House of Commons. MP Murray Calder has introduced a Private Member Bill (C-484) on release of Post 1901 Census. I have been expecting this but was unaware of just when it would be presented. While the wording of the Bill was not shown in Hansard, from other sources I am advised that the wording of this bill should mirror Senator Lorna Milne's Bill S-15. Wording of the Bill will be posted as soon as I have it available. Gordon STATISTICS ACT Mr. Murray Calder (Dufferin-Peel-Wellington-Grey, Lib.) moved for leave to introduce Bill C-484, an act to amend the Statistics Act and the National Archives of Canada Act (census records). He said: Mr. Speaker, I thank the hon. member for Perth-Middlesex for his support in seconding my bill. I am pleased to introduce a bill to allow the public release of post-1901 census records. The intent of the bill is to amend the Statistics Act and the National Archives of Canada Act to allow for the transfer of census records from Statistics Canada to the National Archives of Canada where the records would be released to the public subject to the Privacy Act. The bill is a reasonable compromise. Canadians would have an opportunity to review the census returns 92 years after the census was taken, providing an individual does not provide a written objection to the release of his or her records within that timeframe. The bill finds a balance which ensures confidentiality while it maintains access for genealogists, historians and medical researchers. The census returns are a valuable link to our family heritage, community history and telling about Canada's collective past and present. I join with genealogists worldwide in saying that the only true picture of the lives of our ancestors lies within Canada's census records. I hope hon. members will support it. (Motions deemed adopted, bill read the first time and printed)

    1. [CCC-L] NGS 2000 petitions
    2. Sharon Sergeant
    3. Hello, There are several petitions ciculating at NGS 2000 in Providence, RI this week. We got 25 signatures at the Boston States Migrations table during the society fair evening on May 31. Today's FGS luncheon announcements included info on petitions also at the NGS and FGS booths in the vendor area. I have seen no reports about the expert panel report due May 31 - just the growing number of reports about the misuse of contemporary data. 1. [CCC-L] Congratulations to G. Darrell Swain
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. A special "tip of the hat" to G. Darrell Swain from St. John's, Newfoundland, the one who was awarded the Centennial Flame Recipient Award for 1999. Darrell spoke during the Status of Persons with Disabilities committee meeting, with Carolyn Bennett, Chair. Darrell's topic, which was very interesting, was the manner in which a disabled person leads a very active life, MARIE WHITE, Deputy-Mayor of St. John's, Newfoundland. He is very deserving of the award, and deserves our applause. Re the Centennial Flame:- At the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa, people visiting it may toss money at the base -- this money is spent on resources to assist the disabled. Signage was discussed -- many did not know of the project -- it was felt more funds might be received. Check <www.cpac.ca> for interesting topics, including HRDC Funds. Muriel M. 3. To all who are writing letters to BLUE and GREEN MPs:- When you receive a letter or an e-mail from a Member of Parliament, we do not need the whole content of the letter -- just YES or NO. I am trying to tabulate the memos as they come in -- then send the memos to Gordon Watts so he will be able to update the Scoreboard. Please do not forget -- Reform is now Canadian Alliance Party. Gordon may only have room for Cdn. Alliance on the Scoreboard. Charlie Power has been replaced by Loyola Hearn, from Newfoundland. Does any lister know about RICHARD HARRIS -- mail is returned. Several have been moved to the GOLD CLUB -- will be changed! Hoping to receive many memos!! Some are e-mailing all Blue & Green! Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com>

Please scroll down to #208 and see Census Records. http://www.pbs.org/kbyu/ancestors/newseries/ Adele Turner #67 - 1947 Purcell Way North Vancouver, B.C. V7J 3H4 (604) 987-5137 aturner@axionet.com
