    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To Mr. John Bryden, MP:- We are very sorry about the outcome of the vote on Bill C-206. The safe passage meant a great deal to many of us -- could it have frightened others? Somehow, I feel today was a very bad day in the House of Commons -- possibly not even THE MEN OF THE DEEP (miners) would have saved Bill C-11. HRDC and its ramifications did not help you -- there is a connection between this agency and your Bill. IF only Members of Parliament could vote with their personal conscience, not as one person dictates, I feel your Bill would have passed. Please keep in touch, Muriel M. 2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- [From The Liverpool Advance, Liverpool, Nova Scotia] TYLER ROY, a two-year-old son of a Milton, Queens Co., couple was slated to receive treatment at Fredericton, New Brunswick. This treatment was cancelled "due to circumstances beyond the control od the Roy family". Tyler will now have to wait until August 8, 2000 for treatment at Vancouver's Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO) centre at Coquitlam, British Columbia. These treatments assit in motor control and speech. I have attached a bit about the treatment -- there is much on the internet about this affliction. Search: Quadriplegic Spastic Cerebral Palsy Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Should anyone wish to contact me, I have nothing more than information from The Liverpool Advance <advance@auracom.com> Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> ================================= WHAT IS HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY? HOT (aka HBO or HBOT) stands for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. HOT involves delivering 100% oxygen to body tissues under pressure, the equivalent of going 8 - 24 feet below sea level, in a special chamber. HOT at these pressures causes virtually no side effects and is, in fact, a pleasant, comfortable experience for most children. When tissues are deprived of oxygen, damage occurs. Children with cerebral palsy have experience some form of injury to their brain before, during or shortly after their birth. The availability of oxygen is essential to any healing process. The purpose of HOT is to oxygenate the cells of the body to promote healing of damaged tissues, to decrease swelling and to improve circulation. In the case of cerebral palsy, there may be some recoverable (dormant, not dead) brain tissue around the damaged areas that may be able (when activated by HOT) to take over some of the functions of the damaged areas. There are many anecdotal reports of improvements in children with cerebral palsy when HOT is used as an adjunct to traditional physiotherapy, speech and occupational therapy programs. Improvements noted include: decreased Spasticity, improved speech, increased alertness, improved visual functioning, etc. Although accepted as a treatment for a number of conditions (i.e. decompression sickness - "the bends" - in divers, gas gangrene, carbon monoxide poisoning), the empirical scientific research into treating children with cerebral palsy with HOT is just beginning. Initial results look promising but more studies must be undertaken. HOT 4 R C.P. KIDS FOUNDATION is dedicated to promoting education and research into HOT as a treatment for children living with Cerebral Palsy. 1. [CCC-L] Debate on Motion M-160
    2. Gordon A. WATTS
    3. Greetings All. Jason Kenney's Motion M-160 will received the third and final hour of debate in the House of Commons at 5:30 PM Ottawa time today, 6 June 2000. While the motion has been deemed votable I am advised by Mr. Kenney's office that the vote will be deferred to a future date because of other pressing business in the House. Motion M-160 calls for the release of the 1911 Census as soon as possible after being brought under the control of the National Archives. While there is no compulsion for the government to act on a positive vote on a Motion, it serves to bring the issue before the House for discussion and provides an indication of how the House feels about a given subject. The debate will be viewable on CPAC. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Their headstones say one thing, the 1921 Census has different dates of birth. I am not able to find any birth information to date on that whole branch of my ancestors without seeing the 1911 Census. I cannot find vital information on my mother's father and grandmother either for that matter. 2. Gordon A. WATTS
    3. Greetings All. I received the following email from the office of Murray Calder this morning. While most of it repeats the excerpt from Hansard that I posted a couple of days ago, it does confirm that his bill mirrors that of Senator Lorna Milne's Bill S-15. Now to encourage John Manley to accept these Bills as government Bills so that they have a reasonable chance of being passed and put into law. Happy Hunting. Gordon ----- Original Message ----- From: Calder, Murray - M.P. <Calder.M@parl.gc.ca> To: 'Muriel M. WATTS' <gordon_watts@telus.net> Sent: Monday, 05 June, 2000 7:05 AM Subject: Census bill introduced June 2, 2000 On Friday, Murray introduced the Private Member's Bill to permit the public release of post-1901 census records. The Bill is a replica of the Bill that Senator Lorna Milne has introduced in the Senate. The following is the text of the introduction. STATISTICS ACT Mr. Murray Calder (Dufferin-Peel-Wellington-Grey, Lib.) moved for leave to introduce Bill C-484, an act to amend the Statistics Act and the National Archives of Canada Act (census records). He said: Mr. Speaker, I thank the hon. member for Perth-Middlesex for his support in seconding my bill. I am pleased to introduce a bill to allow the public release of post-1901 census records. The intent of the bill is to amend the Statistics Act and the National Archives of Canada Act to allow for the transfer of census records from Statistics Canada to the National Archives of Canada where the records would be released to the public subject to the Privacy Act. The bill is a reasonable compromise. Canadians would have an opportunity to review the census returns 92 years after the census was taken, providing an individual does not provide a written objection to the release of his or her records within that timeframe. The bill finds a balance which ensures confidentiality while it maintains access for genealogists, historians and medical researchers. The census returns are a valuable link to our family heritage, community history and telling about Canada's collective past and present. I join with genealogists worldwide in saying that the only true picture of the lives of our ancestors lies within Canada's census records. I hope hon. members will support it. (Motions deemed adopted, bill read the first time and printed)

    3. Hi listers, I do agree with your comments Michael but with one exception. > I really do not know how much difference my opinion will make , < EVERYONE'S opinion counts and that is the only way we can make a difference! :o) I believe that that is the way that most of the laws throughout history have been amended or created in the first place. Since I started my Genealogy, I have seen many of my "distant cousins" travel all over the world to "feel" a part of those before them as well as to access further information personally. As most of my interests are in Newfoundland and all over Canada, I know of many who have travelled the country. Imagine the dollars being spent on all that those trips entails. Not to mention that you have to pay for the little extras like parking! The government is making a fortune on the dollars of people like us and it would only make sense that they let the Census become available. The posts recently from Muriel and the "voices" in Parliament have struck a core in my soul. Why they would not want their descendants to know of their contributions to the country certainly makes you think. Skeletons in the closet perhaps? Obviously, those opposed have not looked at the number of websites generated through this wonderful hobby. The information through fellow searchers, Professional searchers, Companies and yes, even the Provinces of Canada. They appear blinded in my opinion! I normally sit back without saying much and this time I decided to send my opinion and agree with you and others fighting for our cause! Good day to all, Lori-Ann larc@buckeye-express.com

    3. Date : June 1, 2000 To : Ms. Adele Turner >From : Ted White, MP (North Vancouver) Subject : Post 1901 Census Dear Ms.Turner: I am writing to acknowledge receipt of your email message of May 28, 2000 regarding the release of post 1901 Census information. In your email message you ask if I am, "as an elected Member of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Canada, voting for or against a Bill supporting the release to the public, of Post 1901 Census records, 92 years after they were recorded?" Actually, at this time there is no legislation before Parliament to vote on with respect to this issue. There is, however, a Private Members Motion which has been put forward by a Canadian Alliance MP, Jason Kenney. M-160 urges the Government to do everything possible to ensure that the post 1901 Census records are released some time after 2003, and I expect to be voting in favour of this Motion if, or when, it comes to a final vote. Although I will be voting for M-160, I feel that it is important to point out that a Private Member's Motion should not be confused with a piece of legislation, or a Government Bill, because a motion does not automatically produce a law when passed. However, the fact is, tabling a Motion in the House is the only means by which the Official Opposition can encourage the Government to take action on a specific issue. For all practical purposes though, passage of M-160 is unlikely to have any effect whatsoever on the Government and I suspect that Minister Manley will simply continue to defer the making of any decision regarding census records until after the next election. Yours truly, Ted White, MP

Please consider, I am a child of people listed on these censuses. I will be listed on censuses from 1953 onwards. I hereby give my permission to have census information regarding me and my minor children to be open to viewing by researchers in the future. My children have a right to know their heritage and nationality. We are descended from British roots. My four year old daughter also, has Ukrainian roots. You will be denying her, her heritage and ability to find her national origins if you choose to support the lock up or the destruction of the Post 1901 censuses. Her great grandparents and family came to Canada in the decade of the Great War. Her grandfather can not remember family details. The censuses will provide this information for her and her two half siblings. Would you deny my nationality of being Chinese, even if I were born in Canada? Certainly not, simply because you would be able to look at me and know my nation of origin identity. Because, I and my children are of Northern European descent does not mean we are not interested in our nation'(s) of origin. Nor should we be denied it. Nor should any other child of Northern European descent. The United Nations says I and my children have the right to our national identity. I am Canadian born, living in a multi cultural country. A country, often stated as a cultural mosiac. Are my children and I of the wrong part of the mosiac to have our inherited right of nationality protected? Would you deny a First Nations person the right to say they were a Canadian born, of the Cree or Sechelt or Huron nations? I believe the following two paragraphs could successfully be argued in court to return mine and others right to access information regarding our historic nation(s) of orgin. UNITED NATIONS Convention on the Rights of the Child Article 8 1. States Parties undertake to respect the right of the child to preserve his or her identity, including nationality, name and family relations as recognized by law without unlawful interference. 2. Where a child is illegally deprived of some or all of the elements of his or her identity, States Parties shall provide appropriate assistance and protection, with a view to re-establishing speedily his or her identity. I and my children have a right to know our nationality. It is part our cultural identity. Thank you for your time and consideration with this submission. Sincerely Roslyn Griston <r_griston@dccnet.com> ================================================== If YOU agree with above, please forward a short paragraph, complete with your name and address, from not only Canada, but United States, to Barbara Marrs - address below. We are hopeful of obtaining volunteers in Australia and other countries -- combined submission will then be forwarded to Senator Lorna Milne as it will be a multi-country submission. Please send your comments as requested to Barbara Marrs <bmarrs@uswest.net> Barbara lives in Boise, USA [copy may be sent to me as well] Many thanks in advance, Muriel M. I totally agree with her comment that all our children have a right to know their heritage. Without anecdotal information (which unfortunately a lot of us are unable to obtain), it is impossible to find the official registrations of births, marriages and deaths (as stated by one member of the panel as always being a source for finding your ancestors) if you do not know the country of origin of your ancestors. It is only the census reports that can steer a person in the direction of his/her heritage. =================== From: " àV" <mac@x5ca.net> To: bmarrs@uswest.net CC: davidson3542@home.com I feel we as Canadians and others nationalities have the right to learn about our heritage. As the mother of 6 children I feel they to should have the right to learn about thier family history. I have a 5 year old son who is mentally challenged, asthmatic, and has epilepsy. We do not know if this was something others in the family also had, if it is passed on through the generations. For these reasons alone we should be able to view these records. Thank you for taking the time to listen,I can only hope and pray now that the government will make the right decision. Kim McLean. Ont.Canada. ======================== Subject: My Rights From: "Joe Black" <jblack@ainop.com> To: bmarrs@uswest.net I agree with Roslyn Griston about the right to have my children and grandchildren to be able to acess any and all records to identify themselves, and this should not be taken away from them or me. My family all come from New Brunswick and if I am denied the right to acess records, I shall never find out about my family as they are all deceased. Thank you for your time. My daughter and I both had epilepsy as children. Without the 1911 censuses I can not find out which side of the family this disease came from. I hope that the Expert Panel does not vote against us, I will never find out. If it chooses to do so then every genealogist may as well close their family tree and say Good-bye to their ancestors. My name is Jack Hebert. My postal address is Box 323, Taylor, B.C. I most heartily agree with your letter. I tried to make that point when I wrote to my Member of Parliament, Mr. Jay Hill, though I am not nearly as coherent a writer as you. Myself, I am half French, and the other half is half English and half German (I believe there is also a few natives thrown in for good measure) Without census records to pore through, there would be no earthly way for me to do any meaningful research. By the way Muriel, my son died of Leukemia back in 1969, and I recently discovered that my Grandmother died of Leukemia as well, though not the same type. Anyway, you can put me down as being in complete agreement with you! Jack Herbert Box 323 Taylor Point, BC <coraliehebert@hotmail.com> ====================================== -- more to follow --
