    1. [CCC-L] A Few Problems as Found on Census Records
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. The following was posted by Paula Carr on the NFLD-LAB list. Many thanks, Paula -- we have all experienced the problems. Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> THE TWELVE COMMANDMENTS FOR NAMES: 1). Thou shalt name your male children: James, John, Joseph, Josiah, Abel, Richard, Thomas, William (2) Thou shalt name your female children: Elizabeth, Mary, Martha, Maria, Sarah, Ida, Virginia, May (3) Thou shalt leave NO trace of your female children. (4) Thou shalt, after naming your children from the above lists, call them by strange nicknames such as: Ike, Eli, Polly, Dolly, Sukey.---making them difficult to trace. (5) Thou shalt NOT use any middle names on any legal documents or census reports, and only where necessary, you may use only initials on legal documents. (6) Thou shalt learn to sign all documents illegibly so that your surname can be spelled, or misspelled, in various ways: Hicks, Hicks, Hix, Hixe, Hucks, Kicks (7) Thou shalt, after no more then 3 generations, make sure that all family records are lost, misplaced, burned in a court house fire, or buried so that NO future trace of them can be found. (8) Thou shalt propogate misleading legends, rumors, & vague innuendo regarding your place of origin. (A) You may have come from : England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales....or Iran. (B) You may have American Indian ancestry of the______tribe.. (C) You may have descended from one of three brothers that came over from______ (9) Thou shalt leave NO cemetery records, or headstones with legible names. (10) Thou shalt leave NO family Bible with records of birth, marriages, or deaths. (11) Thou shalt ALWAYS flip thy name around. If born James Albert, thou must make all the rest of thy records in the names of Albert, or AJ, JA, AL, Bert, Bart, or Alfred. (12) Thou must also flip thy parent's names when making reference to them, although "Unknown" or a blank line is an acceptable alternative. And my own personal addition: Thou shalt name at least 5 generations of males, and dozens of their cousins with identical names in order to totally confuse researchers. ========= ~~~ Peace and Gentle Sunsets, Pam http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/Canopy/4636 ______________________________

    1. [CCC-L] QUEBEC has a wonderful heritage -- but it may be lost!
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
Jeannine Ouellet présidente de la Fédération québécoise des sociétés de généalogie ================================================== -- MAY BE TRANSLATED -- To all residents of Quebec:- Quebec and its residents have a glowing, wonderful, historical heritage -- which might be LOST to present and future generations. The last Quebec census records available to family researchers are the 1901 ones. Many across Canada are hoping to obtain release of the Post-1901 census records, to be available in 2003. However, this might not happen -- unless YOU assist in the fight. As in other parts of Canada, residents of Quebec elected Members of Parliament to speak for them in Ottawa. If they are members of one party, he/she will be told HOW to vote, which might be contrary to the way YOU feel. Would you not like to know how your Member of Parliament feels about this topic???? Check the following list of Members of Parliament:- [Scoreboard] http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/index6.htm You will notice now, or on the next update, only FIVE (5) agree to census release, the others: 6 cannot make up his/her mind; and the Blue ? denotes NO answer to anyone, a total of 64. As in the rest of Canada, researchers will find it very difficult to learn about family members if the census is not available. The church records are great -- but may not include family groupings. We ask all readers to contact his/her Member of Parliament, and forward the replies to one of the following:- Jeannine Ouellette <jeannine.ouellet@sympatico.ca> (en francais) Christine Joudrey <cjjoud@bserv.com> (en francais et anglais) Muriel Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> <anglais) Gordon Watts keeps the scoreboard updated -- to be published before the next election -- his research THE MYTHS OF CENSUS is found at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/7843/poll.html This MAY be printed and translated for all readers. {If TRANSLATED, please forward a copy to be posted to above URL} Let's all work together on this project -- we need the records for research. 1. [CCC-L] NFLD./LABRADOR GEN MAILING LIST
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- My apologies to Newfoundland's Grand Bank Site -- this was a surprise to all who wanted to go searching!!! Thanks, Don, I know "Project 21" is a link but a fantastic link!!! Muriel Just for your information. Project 21 (as referenced in your message) is nothing more than a link from their site to the Newfoundland's Grand Bank site which is the home of the Newfoundland 1921 census and the largest repository of original Newfoundland source documents on the Web. For the month of July it had nearly 450,000 visitors to the site to research through their accumulated information. It is now housed as part of the Maritime Research Center on the Dalhousie University research center in Nova Scotia. It would have been nice if you had identified this as the Newfoundland's Grand bank site rather than letting it appear as if it were information on another site. What people see when they click on your reference is nothing more than a link to our home page. Don Tate Project Coordinator Newfoundland's Grand Bank site http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/Heritage/NGB ================================== Don and all:- I merely copied the listing given by Bryan Keddy on http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/7843/poll.html [This site is maintained by Bryan -- I share it with him!] It is a valuable site, regardless of where it is and what it is called -- I want answers from FIVE Liberal Party Members!! Will be in touch, Don -- we seem to be progressing a bit!! Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com>

    1. [CCC-L] NFLD./LABRADOR GEN MAILING LIST
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- There are many valuable and interesting lists hidden at ONE Canadian genealogy site, so as it is a holiday weekend, let's explore!!!! http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/7843/poll.html At present, until YOU have convinced YOUR Member of Parliament to support Canadian census release when any Bill or Motion is introduced in the House of Commons -- we must continue to keep census data and lists at this site. As soon as we have the census records released to the National Archives so we can peek at them in 2003, more great sites will be added. The main one to search and visit this weekend is NFLD./LABRADOR GEN MAILING LIST. To find it, click on "other sites", scroll down to this one, on the "second page" of genealogy sites. All will be greatly surprised when they click on "Project 21" -- it just happens to be one of my favorites and anyone with Newfoundland and Labrador heritage should be checking this site. Check:- http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/index6.htm You will find that only TWO Members of Parliament have responded, both Progressive Conservative. The others are LIBERAL Party and as usual, belong to the "I do not have to reply as I have been elected" group -- consistent with the Liberal Party of Canada. [Some are in SUPPORT of census release -- will he/she be allowed to vote that way?] If you like this NFLD./LABRADOR GEN MAILING LIST, contact the Member of Parliament. I know the census is open there up to 1935, but future laws could prohibit publication of these census records. On the Scoreboard, to be published before a federal election, at the right-hand side is a pop-up place where you may email the MP. Write a letter to the Member at:- House of Commons, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0A6 -- Postage is FREE if mailed in Canada. IF anyone receives a reply, email the pertinent paragraphs to me, please. All Liberal Members presently have blue ???? -- have not replied!!! Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> 25 Crestview Avenue Brampton, Ontario L6W 2R8

    1. [CCC-L] Inspiration
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. Dear Ancestor: Your tombstone stands among the rest; neglected and alone. The name and date are chiseled out, on polished, marbled stone. It reaches out to all who care It is too late to mourn. You did not know that I exist you died and I was born. Yet each of us are cells of you in flesh, in blood, in bone. Our blood contracts, and beats a pulse entirely our own. Dear Ancestor, the place you filled one hundred years ago. Spreads out among the ones you left who would have loved you so. I wonder if you lived and loved. I wonder if you knew, That someday I would find this spot, and come to visit you. ~author unknown~ The above poem was written by a man who had done his research in Scotland. He had gone back and found his ggg-grandfather's old farm lands. While walking the fields, he came across a old piece of beam and on it were carved his ancestor's initials. Now wouldn't that be the greatest find in the world. That was his inspiration to write the above poem. With thoughts of Elgin, Moray, Scotland!!!! Muriel M. Farquhar Davidson <davidson3542@home.com>

    1. [CCC-L] YOUR Support is Needed, Americans May HELP.
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. Americans can most definitely HELP -- and this would be most appreciated. Many Americans have Canadian roots!!! PETITIONS from Non-Canadians are being received by myself for Senator Lorna Milne whose Bill S-15 has had second reading in the Senate and is possibly now in committee. Petitions are downloadable from http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/petition.htm If you know the area your family came from, the Member of Parliament Scoreboard has been updated PROVINCIALLY at:- http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/index6.htm A great deal of information (and lots of genealogy is found at) http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/7843/poll.html We welcome all assistance -- keep the PETITIONS coming, please. My address is on the Non-Canadian one - in English only! Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> Canadian Census Committee 25 Crestview Avenue Brampton, Ontario L6W 2R8

    1. [CCC-L] NOVA SCOTIA Is "ALMOST" Gleaming With GOLD!!!
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all family researchers, please check NOVA SCOTIA on the following:- http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/index6.htm Does not the Member of Parliament Scoreboard look great EXCEPT for TWO MPs: BILL CASEY and WENDY LILL -- both enjoying their seat on a cute little piece of green fence. Their addresses are:- Bill Casey - MP <Casey.B@parl.gc.ca>& Wendy Lill - MP <Lill.W@parl.gc.ca> Messages have been received from both Members of Parliament -- but these belong in the neither YES -- neither No category. The Constituents will not know how their Member of Parliament will be voting - in SUPPORT of census release or otherwise. THE MYTHS OF CENSUS, researched by Gordon Watts, was mailed to all Members of Parliament about April 24, 2000 -- several have printed it from the following site -- only to find it in the office. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/7843/poll.html The recent Scoreboard numbers as of July 31, 2000 were:- GOLD = 88 / RED X - NO = 6 / GREEN FENCE - Yes/No = 54 / and BLUE ? = 153 ("The I do not need to answer as I have been elected club") The Member of Parliament scoreboard will be published prior to a federal election -- we have lost one GOLD MP (Scott Brison) in Nova Scotia and Jim Hart in British Columbia. Family researchers are hopeful of census release views of both JOE CLARK and STOCKWELL DAY -- wonder who will answer first!!! These men must remember family researchers are also VOTERS. WANTED:- E-mail address for Joe Clark - we have one for Stockwell Day. The following appeared in the latest issue of the Global Genealogy Gazette, submitted by a well-known Nova Scotian:- "About two weeks ago on the CBC national News, Maureen McTeir said: "Everyone has the right to know who they are." Canadians, historians and genealogists would agree with her." [Sincerely hope her husband, Joe Clark, feels the same] Let's try to have a GOLDEN Nova Scotia -- at least it is the ONLY province where ALL Members of Parliament have answered. Come on -- WE can do it!!! Muriel M. 1. [CCC-L] The New Numbers on LCCCC Counter are GREATTTT!!!
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all -- http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/7843/poll.html The LCCCC site is the "HOME" of our future coast-to-coast-to-coast genealogical site -- I was reminded by Peter Stoffer, MP, that I should add the extra "-to-coast" because of the Far North of Canada, also oceans on three sides!!! The counter now shows 17148 -- could be more -- but many do not realize just how genealogy is on this one list. At present we must have CENSUS information -- and if that problem ever gets cleared, Bryan will make the change very speedily!! Go to http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/index6.htm NEW Current Scoreboard Standings: GOLD------YES----- 88 RED X-------NO------ 6 FENCE (Yes/No)-- 54 BLUE ????????? 153 -- ones who prefer NOT to answer. Above total is 301 -- not quite correct:- SCOTT BRISON has resigned in Nova Scotia so Joe Clark may try to win JIM HART has resigned in British Columbia for Stockwell Day Just wondering? Was there a referendum in these ridings for permission??? Members of the Canadian Census Committee would like to obtain the census viewpoints re SUPPORT from both Stockwell Day and Joe Clark. During the last couple days we have corrected one governmental hand-out -- Jason Kenney's Motion M-160 was NOT defeated in June. A couple of us have been correcting a few other bits of erroneous data. Did anyone find FLAT ROCKS yet -- it is posted on the LCCCC site!!! Good intentions -- but rather unfinished -- more to follow!! Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> 25 Crestview Avenue Brampton ON L6W 2R8

    3. COPY THE FOLLOWING -- ADD YOUR MESSAGE -- AND SEND To all who like writing letters -- FREE to Ottawa -- or sending e-mails:- There are a large number of BRITISH COLUMBIA Members of Parliament who might have red faces when the Scoreboard is published PRIOR to the next anticipated federal election. [By-elections do not count]. Researchers in British Columbia look at the newly-released figures and know many of their MPs belong in the "Sitting on the Fence", "Negative" or "Cannot be Bothered to Answer as I am Already Elected" lists. Check: http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/index6.htm GOLD = 88 / NO = 6 / FENCE-SITTERS = 54 / and the usual CANNOT BE BOTHERED TO ANSWER = 153 I believe we DELETE Jim Hart -- as Stockwell Day hopes to win there. 1. [CCC-L] Let's All Contact Canadian Alliance Members!!!
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- Let's contact every member of the Canadian Alliance Party, using the new addresses AND the governmental one. This will mean extra typing, and if the MP gets exasperated with doubles, he/she might send you a reply -- it is worth a try. Read the following -- as some addresses do not follow the common pattern: Stockwell Day <day@canadiancealliance.ca> anyone posting a memo, should refer to the address page. I copy Mr. Day in on everything to do with census -- he must know something about the importance of it by now. -------------- Possibly the government and usual email addresses did not adequately give a visual picture of the Canadian Alliance Party -- according to the Stockwell Day web site, all addresses are new. [We must use the OLD email government address PLUS the new one] Go to: http://www.canadianalliance.ca/index_e.cfm#Top Click on WHO WE ARE When the next page comes up, choose MPs http://www.canadianalliance.ca/youralliance/mp/index.html Example: Jason Kenney is both <kennej@parl.gc.ca> and <kenney@canadianalliance.ca> ------------ To add to the confusion -- wonder if the Bloc Quebecois Members of Parliament will add a new email address -- scuttlebutt is that the Canadian Alliance and Bloc Quebecois might think alike on some subjects, e.g. census (we hope) in order to have a majority vote. [I am all for this type of amalgamation in order to have a democratic type of government and vote!] More changes coming next week when the Scoreboard is changed. BETS ARE ON:- Who will reply first, Stockwell Day or Joe Clark? Both want to be elected -- we want to know how they think about our Post-1901 Canadian Census Release problem -- some of their VOTERS (especially in Nova Scotia) are family researchers! Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> Canadian Census Committee http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/index6.htm

    1. [CCC-L] Letter to Chuck Cadman
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Chuck Cadman, MP Greetings All. FYI Gordon ------------------------------------------------ Dear Sir: I am writing to you in response to your email of 21 June 2000 to Muriel M. Davidson, the text of which is copied below. While the bulk of your message to Ms. Davidson contains information that is hardly new to those writing you to express their concerns regarding lack of access to Post 1901 Census records, I wish to comment on your closing statement, i.e.: "When the Minister introduces legislation in the House of Commons I will take a close look at the Bill to determine if there is a balance between the need to protect personal privacy and the demands of genealogists and historians for access to census records. " I would bring to your attention that under Regulations attached to the Privacy Act, personal information from Census may be transferred to the National Archives and subsequently made available for research 92 years following collection. The Privacy Act currently in use was brought into effect, along with the Access to Information Act, over a three year period (1980 - 1983) during which it was thought any problems with these two Acts would be brought to light and rectified. As the Regulation allowing transfer of Census records to the National Archives after 92 years still exists I must assume that no one of the time found fault with it. The legislators of the day, when dealing with the issue of allowing Census to be transferred to the National Archives, surely were aware of the various Statistics Acts and Regulations under which Census had been collected. They obviously felt that a period of 92 years before allowing access was sufficient to protect the privacy of respondents to Census. In so doing they established a reasonable "balance" between protecting personal privacy and need to allow access to Historic Census for research purposes. While Statistics Canada and Privacy Commissioner Bruce Phillips speak about a "balance" between privacy and allowing access to Historic Census, what exists today is no sort of balance. Total closure, or destruction of these records as desired by Bruce Phillips, constitutes no "balance" of any kind. Contrary to the stated position of Statistics Canada that transfer of Census records to the National Archives is "explicitly prohibited by law", what actually prevents transfer is a "policy decision" of that department. That "policy decision" has been based upon a series of legal opinions from the Department of Justice, all of which are basically flawed in that they consider only one clause dealing with contemporary Secrecy contained in Instructions to Census Officers and Enumerators for the Western Census of 1906. These "opinions" ignore other clauses in those same Instructions that state that Census has value as a record for historical use, is intended to be a permanent record, it's schedules will be stored in the "Archives of the Dominion", and will be carefully preserved for future reference. I might add that these "legal opinions" are just that -- opinions. They have not been tested in the Courts of the land and are, therefore, NOT law. I would urge you to read my submission to the Expert Panel on Access to Historic Census, entitled "The Myths of Census". The files for this submission were sent to all Members of Parliament 24 April 2000, attached to an email. Should you be unable to locate them I would be happy to resend them. Should you request it I will send you a CD-ROM containing much of the research documentation upon which my submission was based. Having read this information I would submit to you once more the question "Would you, as an elected Member of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Canada, vote FOR or AGAINST a Bill supporting release to the Public, of Post 1901 Census Records, 92 years after they were recorded, starting in 1906?" Your constituents voted for you presumably because they felt you were a rational, reasonable, thinking individual, having opinions similar to their own. They seek a definitive answer to the question above and will not be satisfied until they have one from you. Many of your fellow Canadian Alliance MPs have been supportive and given affirmative answers to this question. I invite you to visit the MPs Scoreboard at http://globalgenealogy.com/census to verify this. You are currently shown as "sitting on the fence", having given only non-committal responses to your constituents. I would be more than happy to change this to a gold tick of support should you so desire. I look forward to your early reply. Thank you. Gordon A. The Minister responsible for Statistics Canada, the Honourable John Manley, asked Statistics Canada to develop options for changing the current legislation to allow access to census records. As it stands, there are two possibilities; the first option contemplates amending the Statistics Act to allow records, starting with the 2001 Census and carrying on from there, to be transferred to the National Archives of Canada to be subsequently made available to the public; the second option is to retroactively change the confidentiality provisions of the Statistics Act to allow the 1911 and all censuses taken thereafter to be eventually placed in the public domain. On November 12, 1999 the Minister announced the creation of an Expert Panel on Access to Historical Census Records. The panel has been studying the possibilities mentioned above and will make their recommendation to the Minister around the end of June beginning of July, 2000. When the Minister introduces legislation in the House of Commons I will take a close look at the Bill to determine if there is a balance between the need to protect personal privacy and the demands of genealogists and historians for access to census records. Again, thank you for writing. Sincerely, Chuck Cadman, M.P. Surrey North

    1. [CCC-L] THE MYTHS OF CENSUS by Gordon Watts
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- Many have asked what I meant by THE MYTHS OF CENSUS, available for printing (minus copyright material) at the following URL:- http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/7843/poll.html or http://www.waynecook.com/simcoe.shtml There are SIX main MYTHS OF CENSUS:- 1. There was a PROMISE made by the government of Sir Wilfred Laurier that confidentiality of Census was FOREVER. 2. Respondents to Census were TOLD about this PROMISE. 3. The Census of 1906 was the first in which Rules and Regulations relating to Census and Statistics were subject to the "force of law". The process by which secrecy of name- identifiable Census records coming under the "force of law" was a deliberate, well thought out result of the legislative process. 4. Release of name-identifiable information in the distant future was a reason for confidentiality concerns of respondents to Census. 5. A MAJOR INTENT of early Census legislation was to ensure that Schedules of Census containing name-identified information would NEVER be available for future historical or genealogical research. 6. Without confidentiality that lasts forever, respondents will be reluctant to fill out Census or will not respond truthfully. ========================================= A personal note or two:- Years ago, my grandfather listed all answers he gave on various census records, told me they would be available for me in later years. He was a proud, family type of man -- wish he would be here to add his two cents' worth today! My aunt was born in 1902, still hale and hearty -- lives in a nursing home in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. She told me she can remember the excitement her parents enjoyed filling out the first Canadian census records -- for them -- they came from Maine in 1909. Her comment to me today was "The politicians have it all wrong". An invitation to everyone:- Print the researched data that Gordon Watts found and his reasons for above six MYTHS OF CENSUS - study it -- then contact your elected Member of Parliament. Muriel M.
