Hi Brenda, It seems that the message I sent - has not yet come through. If you take a look at the following site - it will also give you instructions as to how to unsubscribe from the mailing list. The subject line on e mails - are threaded - and should follow the same subject - to attach a different subject does not keep the thread on a correct theme. The request to subscribe and un subscribe - are handled by a computer ( not a person) at a site specific to those requests - and not by a person. To all who sign petitions:- To find PETITIONS: <http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/petition.htm> When you reach this site, the long list of available PETITIONS, in both languages, seems like a restaurant menu. Canadian Petitions are in both languages, French and English, and may be used only in the House of Commons. These are to be mailed to Gordon Watts, come in three different flavours: Word, WordPerfect and Text (from Gordon Watts). There is also a Canadian Petition for usage in the Senate. Non-Canadian Petitions are also in Word, WordPerfect and Text, may ONLY be used in the Senate. Mailing addresses, mine and Gordon's, are on petitions. A WORD OF CAUTION: Several petitions have been received that may not pass scrutineers. They are very PICKY (the only descriptive word I know) and if a bit of paperwork is not correct, they find the nearest File 13!! The Petitions ask one to PRINT the name, then write it, followed by address. Let's get these signed the right way -- I hope to pick up at least 100 signatures at a Sweet Adelines reunion this week!! Also to trace Elsie Eliza Andrina BERRY and her sister Rose Lucy Eleanor BERRY. Without the release of further Census Reports, I will be unable to trace my immediate family during their stay in Canada. Copy as sent: Walt Lastewka, MP and Perry Snow [Neither Wait Nor Stray] I am writing you on behalf of my father, Edward Lawrence CORNEY, born St. Catharines, Ont., Canada on 4 Apr. 1914, my grandmother Elsie Eliza Andrina BERRY, born 13 Dec 1894 in Chelsea, London, England, one of 100,000 children transported to Canada in 1909. Without the information released, I would have never known my grandmother was a British Home Child. Without the 1901 Census, I would have never known my Great- Grandparents and GreatGreatGrandmother, Great Uncle and family were in Toronto, Ont. Canada. That my Great Grandparents are buried in Victoria Lawn Cemetery in St. Catharines, Ont. That Aunts and Uncles are also buried there. Without the POST 1901 Census, I will be unable to trace my Great- GreatGrandmother, her son Henry William CORNEY and his family. Will not be able to trace my Grandmother's sister, Rose Lucy Ellen BERRY, who we believe was also a British Home Child. BUT more important, without the POST 1901 Release and future releases, so many of the 100,000 British Home Children will spend an eternity on a list because their descendants will be unable to trace their journey while they lived in Canada. These children had no say in their young lives to come to Canada, please do not leave them stranded alone. My belief is, that if you asked these forebearers if they want the information released, they would say YES. After all, after 92 to 100 years, how can this possibly hurt them. Privacy is nice, but I hope in 100 years when the 2000 US Census is released, any family member researching me, will be able to get the information needed to find their roots. My parents felt the same way. So on behalf of 100,000 British Home Children and myself, I ask you to please vote YES for the release of POST 1901 Census and any future census reports. Hi Gordon & listers, RE: .As usual, I was disappointed in failing to find any sign of the Report of the Expert Panel on Access to Historic Census. What really ticks me off about this is that Manley knows there are motions in the House of Commons and in the Senate and you think he would release it so members could make an informed decision, unless of course they have seen the report. Hi Wayne. I doubt that the MPs have seen the Report of the Expert Panel. There are at least a couple who would have let us know if it had been made available to all MPs. Jason Kenney being one of them. The 30 day time period for Statistics Canada to respond to my Access to Information request expires on the 18th. We will see what happens when the time expires. I have had no response as yet to my complaint to the Information Commissioner regarding the return of my ATI request from Industry Canada. Should I get no response from my request to Statistics Canada I will have to make a decision then whether to submit a complaint about that to the Information Commissioner. I am hesitant to do that too soon as to date I have had good cooperation from both Mary Ledoux, the ATI Officer for StatCan, and Pamela White, and I do not want to jeopardize that relationship. It is my intention at this time to send an email to John Manley every other day or so until something happens. Hopefully some others will do likewise My biggest concern in doing this is that I suspect that Manley himself sees none of them, but they are passed by the office staff straight to Statistics Canada for response. I would like to find some way to be assured that Manley sees at least some of our email. Happy Hunting. 10 October 2000 Hon. John Manley. Minister of Industry Sir: I have just finished checking the Statistics Canada website, as I do daily, or more frequently. As usual, I was disappointed in failing to find any sign of the Report of the Expert Panel on Access to Historic Census. What causes your reluctance to release this Report to the Public? The print media has reported newly appointed Privacy Commissioner George Radwanski as telling a committee of the House of Commons that the Expert Panel favours allowing access to Historic Census. The Public, through their taxes, have paid for the time and efforts of the Expert Panel in doing their review and compiling their Report. You have had the Report for more than three months. The Public has a right to see what their money has paid for. I call on you again to immediately release the Report of the Expert Panel on Access to Historic Census to the public. Gordon A. To all:- Manitoba and Saskatchewan do not presently have provincial contacts for the Post-1901 Canadian census release campaign. An interested person is needed in each province as it has been found residents will write to someone in their area. It does help if one belongs to the CANADA-CENSUS-CAMPAIGN list. There are occasional memos to forward to the lists in the province, as we look forward to the day the post-1901 census is released. The 1906 census of Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan should have been released in 1998 -- but it was not. Read the following:- MEMORANDUM OF LAW by Lois Sparling, Albertan barrister, http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/7843/poll.html One does not have to be a member of a genealogical society to be a contact -- let me know and I will answer any questions.
