Hi List, In my opinion Gord should do up a webpage called "Would You Vote for these People" Don't go after the ones that are onside. Don't go after the ones that are non-committal as they were waiting for the report to come through. But go after the ones who refused to reply, the last count was 136, which means that you have 136 politicians who don't give a damn or feel that they have to answer to the voter. Greetings All. Senator Lorna Milne requested us to pass on the message below relating to her efforts in the Senate and the effect of the newly called Federal election on Bill S-15. Happy Hunting. I want to bring you all up-to-date on the implications of the election on Bill S-15, my Archives of Canada Act (census records). Bill S-15 had been referred for further study to the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology. It has now died, along with that committee, but I intend to re- introduce the same bill as soon as Parliament resumes after the election. I expect that it will move through the Senate much more quickly this next time, as my colleagues will be familiar with the intent of the bill. My real agenda has always been to get the Minister responsible for Statistics Canada, formerly John Manley but now Brian Tobin, to introduce a Government Bill to solve our problem. Several of the key players in this exercise, including myself, the head of 'Stats' Canada, the Privacy Commissioner and the National Archivist worked all summer to hammer out a compromise position for a Government Bill. We had succeeded, and our proposition was placed before Cabinet just prior to the election call. Now, of course, all bets are off since after the election we will be dealing with a new Minister, a new Cabinet and a new Privacy Commissioner. Fortunately, the new Privacy Commissioner has already reluctantly but publicly agreed, in response to my questioning him in the Senate, with the compromise solution that brought the last Privacy Commissioner on side. In the meantime, I urge all of you to take advantage of this election to press all the candidates in your own riding for their stance on the Release of the Historic Census issue. Don't forget that it was the pressure you put on all Parliamentarians that helped me get the issue this far! As you all know, there is strength in numbers and elections are the perfect opportunity to advance a policy objective. As a Liberal Senator I will, of course, be out campaigning for the Liberal Party. I certainly do not want to lose the advantage I now hold that has enabled me to gain the full co-operation of a Cabinet Minister and to bring our issue directly to the attention of the Cabinet. Sincerely, Senator Lorna Milne
Greetings All Just a note to advise that the position of Mr. Abbott has in fact been updated to show his support of release of Post 1901 Census Records. The file has been sent that when loaded will show him with a gold tick of support. I do not have direct access to the server on which the website resides and must depend on someone else to load the updated files. It is hoped that this will occur shortly. So that we do not frustrate the assistants to the various MPs please forward any responses from them so that the Scoreboard can be updated as soon as possible. It would be nice if some of the MPs who have not responded to questions over the past year and more, or their assistants would get back to us. To Mr. Abbott's assistants, the MP Scoreboard may be viewed at the URL listed below my signature. I have every expectation that his gold tick will show up within a day or two. Thank you. Gordon A. Hi Roz. To answer your question, I am advised by Statistics Canada's ATIP Commissioner that regardless of election calls or otherwise, the law requires the Report of the Expert Panel to be published within 90 days of receipt of my ATI request. The only question at the moment is whether that 90 days will start with receipt of my original request to Industry Canada, or with my second request to Statistics Canada. If the former, then the report must be published by 21 November. If the latter it must be published by 18 December. I will be submitting an addendum to the official complaint that I made to the Information Commissioner when my original request to Industry Canada was refused. Happy Hunting. GladysSteinke@aol.com wrote: > What has this got to do with Genealogy ????? > --------------------------- Hello Gladys:- Are you a family researcher? Have you ever had eye-strain trying to decipher census records of years prior to 1901? Church records are great, but do not give the complete family as found on a census record -- have you found this? Senator Lorna Milne, who has Bill S-15 for Post-1901 census release now in committee after the Second Reading, has one favorite statement:- "Census records are the basics of genealogy and family history'". Senator Milne has published several books, is a family historian when time permits her -- I feel we should accept her views. Yes, family researchers and historians are VOTERS -- there are an estimated 7.5 or 8 million of us, plus many who only check their own family records. There are many descendants of Home Children, children scooped off the streets in England, brought here by groups over a period of time. Today, children and grandchildren are searching for their heritage. One older man remembers sleeping in a room with other children -- his brothers or sisters????? The answer has yet to be learned. Believe me, CENSUS RECORDS are a major part of GENEALOGY!!!!! Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> [Researching many Nova Scotia families] >
here is a "fun" and informative site. http://www.yourpolitician.com contact all of your candidates in your riding have them get on board..and then you can post your questions about the post 1901 censuses to them. let your local newspapers know this site exists. this is a great place for people who don't attend all candidates debates to find out who is running and what their platform is. moreover, even after an election the politician can maintain contact with the electorate. i just checked my current mp is using it. is yours? roz -----Original Message----- From: Gordon A. http://www.pier21.ns.ca/ To all: Many have relatives who have come to this country as immigrants, war brides, prisoners of war who remained to become Canadians. Stories from Pier 21 was on the History Channel this evening -- gave many highlights, interviews, plus the view of the light-house on St. George's Island, with Dartmouth in the background. I recommend this show for anyone seeking these elusive trails -- I am not certain if names are available of all the thousands who passed through the doors. Pier 21 is located behind the large hotel which is next to the railway station in south end of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Hope you enjoy the URL -- there may be more information available. http://www.herald.ns.ca/stories/2000/10/21/f121.raw.html To all:- The news from a reliable newspaper, The Halifax Herald, concerning the Merchant Mariners/Seamen, is a real insult!!! Many of the surviving Merchant Navy, the ones who sailed on the U-boat ridden Atlantic Ocean, without even guns as protection, deserve a great deal more than this. Going back a few years, to World War II, every business in Liverpool, Nova Scotia had a small truck, equipped with room for four stretchers on the back, plus the usual four blankets. When a merchant ship, regardless of country, was sunk in Liverpool Harbour, the trucks would converge to the waterfront, load up any survivors and head to the gym of the high school. It was here that fold-up cots had been put out, food prepared by the various groups of the coastal town. Students of the high school were given the endless small chores to look after -- names, addresses, etc. We looked after the seamen until a hospital train came from Halifax, 100 miles eastward. Many did not make it -- one interpreter worked with the RCMP for the correct language -- the U-boats did not care which ships were hit!! Now, the government does not seem to care for these survivors -- I know many of them, and they have suffered for years. Please look at any names on the ballot before voting in the coming election! Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> [One who worked in the school gym during World War II] --------------------------------- >From Aileen Sloane <sloane@voyageur.ca> Muriel: I agree with you! We are from the same generation! Many of my old friends were in the Merchant Navy. I remember what dangers they endured. They did their part in a major way and certainly deserve the respect and support of all Canadians. Above all they deserve the same compensations and benefits as the Active Forces. They were just as active dodging u-boats and torpedoes, as any other naval vessel. Plus - who do they think helped a lot of the war children and others get safely over here from England and Holland? The Merchant Navy! And - if I remember correctly, didn't the Government officially draw all ships other than passenger liners into war service? Conscription of vessels, or whatever they called it? That made the men official too in my books! Looks like we have more genealogical history to be made in another direction! Aileen
Hi Virginia. I am certain that if any of our listers is able to answer your question they will do so privately, however the purpose of the Canada Census Campaign mail list is essentially to provide a forum for those concerned with obtaining public access to Post 1901 census records in Canada. Questions and comments regarding this subject are more than welcome, however individual queries are not the purpose of the list. There are various groups that have indexed different census's, mostly locally for their own area and I would suggest the most likely way of finding these would be to join a mail list specific to Quebec and post your query there. This having been said, any Census for the year you specify would likely be a nominal one, listing only head of household and numbers, but not names, of any other people in that household, i.e. men, women, children over a certain age and children under that age. I wish you luck in your search. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. To all listers:- It is nice to receive letters from the politicians to whom I have written, but I sincerely wish SOMEONE in the Liberal Party would write a new memo for reply -- I have now received No. 33 of the same letter, with only a different signature. This letter was signed personally by Raymond Chan -- and as usual a copy was forwarded to John Manley, "Minister Responsible for Statistics Canada". What do we believe in the statement: "Minister Responsible for Statistics Canada" To date, the Report of the Expert Panel has been kept from us - WHY? Was the Report kept from residents because of the content??? To date, the Liberal Government COULD HAVE taken either Senator Lorna Milne's S-15 or Murray Calder's C-484, and made it a government bill, votable -- and it would have passed. Please pass the word the Canada Census Committee members would like not only the 1911 census to be available, but would like to get back to personal research projects. The members of the Liberal Party have not cared about Home Children and many other family searches unable to be concluded due to lack of the 1911 census records. To top it off, the Prime Minister and Governor-General are celebrating my birthday -- in a very unnecessary move, one that will cost about $200 million -- (some of the surplus?). I do not need that type of present!! Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> Canada Census Committee
I have three Non-Canadian Petitions in front of me, with signatures as follows:- LTC Janet P. Jolin, USA Ret., Sioux City, Iowa Woodbury County Genealogical Society-----------25 Signatures Don Litzer, Heart O'Wisconsin Genealogical Society, Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin------------------21 Signatures Evelyn Brown, Riley County Genealogical Society, Manhattan, Kansas----------------------------18 Signatures Many thanks to all who signed and the senders of above. For Non-Canadian Petitions to the Senate:- http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/petition.htm Find the Non-Canadian Petition, printable in either Word, or WordPerfect, with Text available. Please remember, every printer is different -- some are plain stubborn -- so ADJUST pages by using PRINT PREVIEW. The first line on the petition should be Supporting Petition to The Government of Canada For The Release of Post 1901 Census Records There is a space, then a place to sign name of country. I do not know why the next few paragraphs are called a PRAYER, but they are -- it is a statement, but governments have strange names. Below this is "Signatures Collected at .......... by.......... Address.............................tel/E-Mail......... At the bottom of this page will be my mailing address. Please adjust your printer so this is what you have. The second page will have space for 25 names, with lines that may not show in Print Preview, but believe it or not, they are there!! I am sending this as I would not want any signatures dumped in the garbage -- Senator Lorna Milne does not have the last word, there is a group of "paper scrutineers" which makes certain every last thing that has been presented is correct. I have had to FIX a number of petitions -- ALL have been given to Senator Milne, as she lives about five blocks from me. Important Message: KEEP 'EM COMING!!! Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> Canada Census Committee http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/7843/poll.html
To Connie Butler and other Non-Canadians:- The ORIGINAL SIGNATURES are needed, and I am not certain if the committee approving the petitions would even allow a fax. All Non-Canadian petitions received have been original signatures. Some in United States are fortunate to live near the Canadian border, and several have arrived this way -- Postage to Politicians is FREE in Canada. In this case, they would be sent directly to Senator Lorna Milne at her Ottawa office. Sorry about this -- but we do not make the rules -- they are made in Ottawa. Muriel M. To Debbie Anderson:- Although you live in Dayton, Ohio, researching a gt-grandfather in Quebec, you have every right to be involved and know about this stout-hearted group of volunteers, trying to get the 1911 and later census records released. I have copied in a few of the names, and will try to put these in order. I became concerned when I read an article written by Lyndall Winters back in 1996 or so. How could I help? The thought kept going around in my mind. Senator Lorna Milne, also a personal friend, called me in March, 1999 -- a couple memos on two lists in Nova Scotia and the committee was formed!! [Although I live in Ontario, the two "home" lists kept me up-to-date] Global Genealogy set up a scoreboard of all Members of Parliament, and they have certain ratings: GOLD tick for YES; RED X for NO; No Answer - ?? http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/index6.htm Find the province you desire, click on that -- then click on the MP's name, and you will see any correspondence to and from the Member. Gordon Watts looks after all the online Global Genealogy lists, plus he has added extras of his own: http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census Petitions have been signed by people, with Canadian roots, from all parts of the world -- only Canadian ones in House of Commons, Senator Milne receives both Canadian and Non-Canadian Senate Petitions. http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/petition.htm (Two languages) Genealogy and census go hand-in-hand, so Bryan Keddy and I formed the future COAST-TO-COAST-TO-COAST Canadian genealogy site on July 1, 1999: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/7843/poll.html At present, due to the government's lack of census release, there are a number of links relating to census -- but also sites from across Canada. The French language and I parted company a number of years ago, so now we have Christine Joudrey, a native of Quebec, who translates. There is also a very special list, one where "most anything" can be said, but no flames and no census lookups -- genetically inherited diseases and Home Children have been prominent subjects:- CANADA-CENSUS-CAMPAIGN-L@rootsweb.com We post ALL letters from Members of Parliament (please, Mr. Clark). Gordon Watts is listowner -- all interested in census may belong. What do I do? I like sending memos to politicians, have written hard copy mail to all -- but many DO NOT REPLY. Newspapers have heard from me, and this posting is a sample of former newspaper skills. Often, I have memos to send out -- Doug Joudrey approves these before posting -- just to check if suitable -- we all work together. Lyndall Winters is our source of advice, with thanks, Lyn!! Believe it or not, there are about 25 of us, including my 12 special members. [Senator Milne's husband has promised a backyard barbecue here in our city of Brampton, Ontario when we win the census battle!!] By now, Uncle Fred might be sorry he welcomed any census postings -- but as I am new to this list -- and many seem to be new to our census problem -- I felt it a correct time to cover over 1 1/2 years of committee history. Any reader may ask a question -- we will always answer. Muriel M.
