http://www.fillesduroi.org/Daughters/daughters.html To all researching French genealogy:- The above URL would lead one to believe it would list "daughters of a king" -- yes, it does, in a certain way. I understand there are 17 pages of names -- the site is in both French and English - and sounds great for the many who are searching THE one little link to the past! Another present day method is to assist the committee hoping for release of the post-1901 Canadian census. We NEED Canadian petition as Non-Canadian ones can only be used with/after the Second Reading. Looking forward to hearing from many in Quebec. Muriel M. The British Home Children's site starts with this paragraph:- Welcome to the British Home Children Website a place devoted to providing research resources for the estimated 4 million Canadian descendants who search for their potential 20 million British relatives. The last time the site was worked on was Dec. 9, 2000 -- it is easy to see the combination of Perry Snow's and Bryan Keddy's magical work -- there is so much to read and so many names of those still unfound. Go to:- http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~britishhomechildren Senator Lorna Milne has offered to be a "voice" for the BHC when she presents her Private Member's Bill -- but petitions are desired to bck this up. I suggest one member have all census petitions sent to him or her, whether for the House of Commons (Canadian only) or for the Senate (both Canadian and Non-Canadian). Addresses are on petitions. It is requested NO WORDING be changed as this void the petition. We do not know how picky the scrutineers are!! Download from http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/petition.htm You will find these are in PDF format -- I have attachments if your computer cannot be friendly with Adobe Acrobat -- it really is great! Looking forward to fat envelopes -- the House of Commons and the Senate resumes on January 29, 2001 -- and petitions are arriving every day! Please -- let your petition be the next one!! Muriel M. To all:- When I thought about a Christmas gift for my aunt, 98 last April, I had to be content with Bell Canada telephone gift certificates, which can be used on the M T & T system. The gift my aunt desired was release of the 1911 Canadian census, but this possibility was stopped by the election. Reason: My aunt, the last of her family, was born April 25, 1902 in Bucksport,Maine, and arrived in Liverpool in 1909. Family included my mother, now deceased. The 1911 census would have been the FIRST Canadian census on which my aunt's name would have appeared. Way back in 1970s, I was introduced to the wonderful history stored in our Canadian census -- family groupings, genealogy -- my aunt taught me how important these were. Now I am unable to give her the Christmas gift she desired. With her 99th birthday in April, I may be fortunate! Let's get together and support anyone trying to help us obtain our history! Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> Brampton, Ontario - formerly Summerville Centre, Queens County, NS http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/petition.htm [Get them printed and signed, please -- Parliament resumes Jan. 29]
The following is taken from the I.O.O.F. NEWS, received recently:- WHAT IS A VOLUNTEER? V - Very fragile. Don't crush his/her spirit. O - Only trying to help. Talk to him/her, don't yell. L - Labour. You need him/her, they do not need you. U - Unpaid. The price is right. N - Non-union. He/she can walk away. T - Trained. Use what he/she can offer. E - Eager to help. He/she wouldn't be there otherwise. E - Enabling. Without him/her, you're sunk. R - Retentive. Praise him/her and they'll remember. Sort of think this applies to many of us, whether working as committee members, writing to MPs, getting signatures on petitions -- VOLUNTEERS are wanted and needed. Muriel M. To all:- Many of us are searching for the one or more "missing pieces of our family puzzles" and wonder WHY we have to resort to politicians to hopefully obtain release of the post-1901 Canadian census records. Due to several who misinterpreted various legislation, we have had to rely on politicians presenting Bills, Motions in the Senate and House of Commons. We seemed to be gaining ground -- when the Nov. 27 election was called -- now we start petitions all over again. I spoke to Senator Lorna Milne and she told me she would be honoured to present any number of petitions from the British Home Children group. She remarked that she would give a history at the time of presentation, which would be written in Hansard for permanent record. It does not matter if you are Canadian or Non-Canadian -- either petition will do, both acceptable. However, only Canadians may sign the Canadian one -- either language -- Non-Canadians have their own petition in English only. If census is one way to locate your missing kin, Senator Milne is ready to assist as soon as Parliament re-convenes. She thanks all in advance for the signatures -- and at the same time, the House of Commons petition may be signed by Canadian people ONLY. Looking forward to receiving stacks of mail!!! Do not mark anything on the petition unless it states that -- I would prefer you to send a small note WITH the petition -- the scrutineers at Ottawa are too thorough!!! Muriel M. To all: Years ago, when I started my FARQUHAR research, I had a number of letters from him -- these were greatly appreciated and still on file. Canada. Having had a peek at the topics and lecturers, I am impressed. Among the keynote speakers is Dick Eastman, director of Gentech and manager of the Genealogy Forum of Compuserve. Wendy Anderson, an authority on British records will be flying in from Cambridge, England. Rick Roberts, who many will recognize as the editor of the Canada Global Gazette on-line newsletter will be talking about computer software. Peter Murphy, recipient of Canada's Governor General's award for his thesis on Irish Immigrant children and Nova Scotia historian Allen Robertson will be speaking. Besides the lectures there are expert panels, computer labs, family history displays. The Provincial Archives will also participate, bringing some of their records to the Conference. The four day event is a unique opportunity to meet others sharing an interest in Maritime roots, learn a little bit and enjoy some down east hospitality. If you would like to learn more about the conference ie. topics, speakers, fees etc., please contact Joan Pearce at <pearcer@nbnet.nb.ca>

To all:- The Nov. 27 federal election is over -- Murray Calder was re-elected, so now we look forward to duplicate Private Member's Bills in both House of Commons and Senate. I understand the wording will be the same -- but there may be a new number to replace both S-15 and C-484. Both Bills "died on the Order paper" so they must present new Private Member's Bills. We do know one certain thing: Both Senator Lorna Milne and Murray Calder,MP, will be back working as soon as possible for release of our Canadian census. My dream is that we receive the "prairie" 1906, the desired 1911, but also the 1921 and 1931 -- which would put Canada on the same level of census release as United States. There are some online records, but these are sporadic -- I have a list of any I find and will accept any suggestions. Let's plan to load Lorna's (and Murray's) Christmas tree with PETITIONS!!! There are two kinds, Canadian and Non-Canadian -- for the Senate and the House of Commons. These are in our two official languages - French and English.A Canadian may sign petitions for both Senate and the House. My home address will be found on Senate petitions, Gordon Watts address on House of Commons petitions. We must have the page that has the "prayer", with the next page of 25 spaces with directions. Please do not mix Canadian and American addresses!!!! There is a Non-Canadian one for the Senate only. Go to http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/petition.htm Download, in the new PDF format, the one of your choice or country. If in doubt, please write PRIVATELY to myself or Gordon Watts. We will give you assistance -- even send attachments when necessary. As posted on BRITISHHOMECHILDREN-L@rootsweb.com list. Hello I know this is a bit outside the usual scope of this list but some of us who passed through the hands of the Barnardos organization in the UK in later years and were then adopted, are fairing little better than the ancestors of those who were migrated in earlier years, when it comes to getting access to records, I would be most grateful to hear from anyone who can help in putting pressure on Barnardos to accept its Human Rights obligations in the UK. Currently Barnardos use the UK adoption legislation as a way of denying those who have been adopted in later childhood full access to their pre adoption records. I am in the process of attempting to take some legal action to get this situation changed and would like to hear from anyone one who has had a problem with Barnardos and access to their own or their ancestors records. I would particularly like to contact any one who has approached Barnardos Counselling Services Project at Barkingside UK, for access to either their adoption file or records of their time in Barnardos' care and have found the response that they received to be unsatisfactory. Barnardos' policy on adoptees access to records can be seen at : http://info.harritt.net/barnardos I can be contacted by leaving a message at 0207 691 9668 Via web mail at http://email.harritt.net or e-mail bp@harritt.co.uk Or by post to: Robin Harritt, Bontddu Burton End Stansted Mountfitchet Essex CM24 8UF Many thanks for your patience in reading this. Thanks to Steve/Sue Poulin for forwarding this great oldie!! Muriel <davidson3542@home.com> Voices In My Heart It was the first day of census and all through the land each pollster was ready, a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride, his books and his quills were tucked close by his side. A long dusty ride down a road barely there, toward the smell of fresh bread wafting up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face and wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water as they sat at the table, and she answered his questions the best she was able. He asked her of children. Yes, she had quite a few. The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red. His sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride, and she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the colour, the age, the marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head, and he saw her lips quiver for the ones that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot"... Was it Carolina, or Tennessee, or Georgia or not? They came from Scotland, on that she was clear, But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such. They could read some and write some...though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done, so he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear, "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp...it's now you and me as we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census, and scroll down so slow, as we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day that the entries they made would affect us this way. If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel and the searching that makes them so increasingly real? We can hear if we listen, the words they impart through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. Courtesy of the author Darlene Stevens

PLEASE DO VIRUS CHECK ON YOUR COMPUTERS To all who may have sent messages today!!! I have been the unhappy recipient of two Snow White "hahahaha" messages with attachments -- one re "virgin lady" the other "dwarf4you". There was another "sexy lady" one last evening. The paragraph before the attachment reads like this:- Today, Snowhite was turning 18. The 7 Dwarfs always where very educated and polite with Snowhite. When they go out work at mornign, they promissed a *huge* surprise. Snowhite was anxious. Suddlently, the door open, and the Seven Dwarfs enter... This is followed by the attachment. Needless to say, I am not too pleased to have to run virus checks, two nights in a row --- I suggest everyone do this -- YOU may be the unsuspecting culprit as these pesky things attach to mail being sent. Sincerely hope, after all computers are checked, there will be no more of these items. If anyone is doing it for "fun", please try another hobby!!! Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com>
The following may be sent to other lists in Quebec, plus being forwarded to all genealogical and historical societies, please. >>>>>>>>>>> MAY BE TRANSLATED <<<<<<<<<<<< To all:- Gordon Watts has spent many long hours updating the Member of Parliament Scoreboard, and as of Dec. 7, 2000 the totals were as follows:- GOLD Tick - meaning YES - in favour = 94 RED X - meaning NO - not in favour..= 7 Reclining on pieces of YES/NO Fences=47 Unknown, includes new MPs - ??????=153 As there are 301 Members of Parliament, when a vote on the proposed Private Member's Bill is due -- we SHOULD have the GOLD YES = 200++. That will allow for several off sick or vacationing, or whatever. The QUEBEC Scoreboard is very BLUE -- which means there will have to be a great deal of work by all those who desire the post-1901 Canadian census released -- I am certain we all do. Quebec totals according to the Scoreboard gave me the following:- SIX (6) Members of Parliament with GOLD / YES ticks FOURTEEN (14) Members of Parliament who do not know whether to say YES or NO -- the little pieces of fence FIFTY-FIVE (55) with BLUE ??? -- some of these could be new Members of Parliament, or have not answered prior to the election. Censeii are invaluable for many folk Release of the censeii at this time should be a way of honoring our pioneering ancestors rather than violating privacy and political issues as the time frame respects both legal copyright and privacy acts. As censeii were taken every 5 years .... 1901-1906-1911-1916... to track the population growth of Saskatchewan in the early homesteading days this is a huge benefit to genealogists and historians. On December 6, 1917 in Halifax, NS almost 2,000 people died and some 5,000 were injured in the aftermath of the collision of the ships "Imo" and "Mont Blanc" - the infamous Halifax Explosion. The effects of that event were extremely far-reaching and many of those from who we are descended or to whom we are related were involved in some way. For example, I have exchanged emails in the past with individuals in the United States whose relatives came to help out with the medical and housing emergencies. Many people who survived chose not to talk about this traumatic event or only shared minimal details. I know, for example, that my mother, at 22 months of age, survived only because her mother, in planning lunch, chose to go to the sauerkraut barrel in the basement just before the explosion and took my mother with her. When they later returned to the kitchen, the small rocker in which my mother had been seated had been crushed by the china cabinet. My mother always loved sauerkraut and said that was because it had saved her life! What I don't know is how long she and her mother were in the basement, how badly the house was damaged, whether or not they had to "camp out" with the thousands who had to live in tents on the Common. Significantly, I know nothing of my grandfather's experiences - he was doing military guard duty on the islands at the mouth of the Halifax Harbour at the time. He never spoke of the event in my hearing. I have read much about this event, particularly recently published accounts of the effects on some families. The A & E video on the event is particularly moving, particularly the stories of some survivors who were children at the time. An article in today's online edition of the Halifax Herald talks about the firemen who responded to the initial call and the memorials planned in the Halifax-Dartmouth area. As the daughter of a survivor (now deceased), I always find this day very significant. Although this is somewhat off-topic, I would urge everyone to take a moment to think of those who suffered on this day and those who may still be living with the residual effects. Thanks! Greetings All. PLEASE DO NOT FORWARD THIS MESSAGE It is not my practice to pass on warnings about viruses as in most cases they end up being hoaxes. I find it necessary however to advise that someone, likely more than one person, who has my email address gordon_watts@telus.net in their email address book has been infected with a virus and is unknowingly passing it on. I have today received at least 15 messages that contain a virus called W32/Hybris.gen@M. The message received shows it from "Hahaha" and has a subject line stating "Snowhite and the Seven Dwarfs - The REAL story!" Checking the full headers using "properties" it is shown as having come from Hahaha@sexyfun.com . It has an attachment that if opened triggers an Internet worm virus. If you have received a similar message and opened the attachment you are infected. The virus is similar to the Melissa virus in that it attaches to the addresses of everyone in your address book and attempts to send a copy of the worm to all mail recipients whenever email messages are sent out. It also posts update details to a newsgroup named alt.comp.virus. Check the McAfee AVERT website at http://vil.nai.com/vil/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=98873 for information relating to this virus, including how to remove it. I have received this virus carrying message from BellSouth, Bell Canada, United/Sprint Tel Florida, UUNET Canada, Megabyte Computer Service, and DTC Internet Inc, among others. I repeat, DO NOT FORWARD THIS MESSAGE. I am sending it to addresses that I have recently sent messages to. I do not wish to trigger a never-ending cycle with this message. Happy Hunting. Gordon A.
