yes, the letters and petitions work. i joined this list when it was just celebrating its first year of existance. i've watched mp's and senators swing from no response or fence sitters and even some of those who opposed to come over to our side. i remember the thrill of when we had converted half the house of commons and still kept sending emails/letters to ensure that when it went to vote, we'd still have enough clout, even with absenteeism. muriel is a marvel at producing information and nagging the non-responders into a response. milne has busted her butt to make in roads with the stodgey..hmm the less the friendly senators. she does very well with diplomacy. you may have noticed i don't. she plays the game..politics is like fishing..you just have to use the right bait to hook em..and some just of these big fish will never bite, and that doesn't matter as long as we catch the majority of these power voters. always remember, speaking up and out does gain attention. it helps create awareness. the more public we get the more the mp's begin to take us seriously. so keep those cards/letters emails going to not only your representatives in ottawa, but to the media...talk to your friends and neighbours..get them on board. remind the mp's in public that this is an important issue. meet your mp face to face. ppl from other countries..contact the canadian reps who hold office in the county/district your person of interest is from. remind the elected/appointed offical you still have kinfolk in the area..(even if you haven't found them yet, the politician doesn't need to know that). roz On Thursday, May 29, 2003 12:01 PM, Lori Lauen [SMTP:[email protected]] wrote: > As I stated earlier this is not a matter of Bush. To all:- My faithful assistant, Bryan Keddy, presented the former Lunenburg County's Canadian Census Campaign site to me and more recently, changed it from Geocities to Rootsweb format. I had become accustomed to the usual "html" The correct URL is as follows:- http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~downhome/post1901census.htm Sorry! this one will open!! Muriel M. Lori Whether or not our letters will "do any good or not" remains to be seen. The fact remains, if we do not inform the MPs how we feel about the conditions and restrictions of Bill S-13, if we do not TRY, NOTHING WILL BE CHANGED. If nothing is changed, it should not be because of a lack of trying on our part. Greetings All. I have already mentioned this a couple of times. Can we PLEASE get our posts back to the reason this list exists -- regaining public access to Historic Census records. Gordon A. Watts [email protected] CCC List administrator
As I stated earlier this is not a matter of Bush. This is only a matter of Chretien who represents Canada throwing insults at other governments. Should never have happened. As for the 1911 census, IMO, there are reasons other than people's privacy of 92 yrs ago that is causing problems for the release of it. I know, personally that the government is not that concerned when it comes to privacy of living people. I don't know if all the letters are going to do any good or not when it comes to this. To all:- There have been a number of subscribers to the CCC mail list feel they desired to unsubscribe -- we do not know the reasons -- it could have been that many deviated from the reason the Canada-Census-Campaign mail list was created:- Sharing of Thoughts and a DESIRE for release of the Post-1901 census records. Let's stay on CENSUS thoughts only -- we do not need to chop up myself, Chretien, Senator Milne or anyone else -- we all have feelings -- and I can assure you that Senator Milne, myself and Gordon Watts have worked faithfully toward release, without restrictions, of the 1911 and later Canadian census records since March 1999. We will continue to do this -- ask for your assistance by each one writing to his or her Member of Parliament and be assured the elected politician will support Bill S-13 in "full debate, free vote, amendments (to get rid of restrictions) and the dubious extra 20 years. [Please copy your letter to me -- I will file it, and Gordon will post it to the scoreboard]. Should a person desire to unsubscribe, please do not use one of MY postings to do so -- that is the incorrect way to do so. I have helped many who are going away for a brief period, Gordon Watts will do this manually as list administrator. Many of the readers know my husband of over 57 years has been a resident at Sunnybrook Veteran's Wing since March 26, 2001. Last week, when I visited him, the vice-president Lloyd ______ (not supposed to give names) of the Resident's Council "borrowed" me and introduced me to one of the senior veterans -- born in 1908. This veteran was an officer in World War II, as was Lloyd, and their plea is that the 1911 census be released intact. This was the last census prior to World War One -- the names of those killed in action for Canada and freedom would be on the census records. Juanita MacDonald has also supplied the list with another reason WHY the records should be released -- were Canadians who became POWs IN CANADA left off census records?. Several times recently, mention has been made of "Post-1906" -- all internet sites have the "Post-1901" as part of the URL. Yes, the 1906 census was released January 24, 2003, but included only three provinces, whereas 1901 and 1911, etc., are Canada-wide. Remember your Access to Information forms -- mark June 2 on your calendars, add your $5.00 -- swamp the department -- by doing this the staff will know we are serious. Let's Get Back to Basics -- and on Track!! Muriel M. Davidson [email protected] Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee 25 Crestview Avenue, Brampton, ON L6W 2R8 http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index6.htm http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~downhome/post1901census.html [Click on the Canadian flag logo -- another page] --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Perhaps the list administrators might explain to the list how your Flame-O-Meter is calibrated. I see that both Gordon and Muriel have been on-line during the ugly political barrage this morning, which has no place on this list. It kept going on and on. I re-read Mr. Stewart's message for which he was unsubscribed. Yes, he was negative about statements made by Milne. But I cannot identify WHAT exactly he said that would be labelled a "flame." There must be different criteria for statements about/by different folks: 1. The sacred cows of the census reform committee, 2. Government employees, 3. Government politicians, 4. Folks who label other emails as "ugly," and 5. You name it as the whim arises. On a more serious note, thanks to the list administrators for all the hard work they do. Must be like trying to herd cats. Dense in the west, Rene
I have subscribed to this list to try and help have the 1911 census released to those of us who want it. Us, being those Canadians looking for their families roots with whatever means available. The 1911 census will be invaluable to me, as it is the only one where my father's family in Canada will all be found. Up to now, I have been one of the "lurkers" - trying to get the lay of the land -it seems to me that we will never achieve the goals first put forward by the Census Committee because the "divide and conquer" saying is in full swing. All of us have political opinions and opinions on the leaders of various countries in the world. All of us are aware of what is going on in the world today. All of us read newspapers and all of us WANT THE CENSUS. So, can we please get back to the real reason for this list - fighting for release of the 1911 census and beyond for those of us now and in the future who want, or will want access to them? I enjoy a good debate on the woes of the political scene in Canada and the World - but there is a time and a place - across the kitchen table always works for me. Let's leave this list for what it was intended - Getting unrestricted access to the Census takings from 1911 on. Shirley

I have been assured by the National Archivist -- who is on OUR side in this dispute -- that the Census records, when released will be available in all the normal places in which they are currently available. I cannot say for sources outside of Canada whether this will hold true for libraries, etc, but they will also be on line for the world to access and view. If we are unable to get through our amendments to remove the conditions and restrictions of access, those conditions and restrictions will be in force regardless of where access is available. Libraries etc. would be required to get the same assurances and commitment from you as you would be required to give for online access. Jeff has been unable to release the specific commitment required but some time ago he read it to me in a telephone conversation and my interpretation of what it said is on the Post 1901 Census Project website at the URL below. I agree with your assessment as to the reason for the conditions and restrictions, but as Jeff has indicated, there are a number of Cabinet members that strongly support his views on the subject. We must do all that we can to change their minds. As Bill S-13 has now received first reading in the House of Commons, NOW is the time to contact our MPs. Tomorrow may be too late. Happy Hunting. Who approves it, and where does it go. By simply withholding a form, they can stop us dead. And where do we get the form, will the libraries have to carry it? If it is on line, what info on us do they want before we can use it. You would need approval all over the place to do your research. I personally use the LSD centers to read cences, I like the form theycome in. My library has very poor lighting for it. Will I need church approval to read it. I am sure they would grant it, but can they get approval to let me. I think they will be stopped in their tracks. Personally I think this should be stopped dead. yes, i too was raised if you can't say something nice don't say it all. but, some ppl think it is okay for world leaders to bash france, germany, russia (formerly the ussr), but we must never ever say anything about the usa...and this time its not the usa..it is bush the ppl of this planet are disgusted with. it is not anti-americanism..it is anti-bushism. the census issue also has an international flavour thanks to past retirement age dr. ivan fellegi who revamped the american census process in 1978, who has been involved with brasil, australia and other countries and how they now handle their censuses. chretien's greatest legacy would be to retire fellegi. but, he's in pretty darn tight with the new world order which dubya's daddy started spouting about a couple of decades ago. yes, lori we a great distance apart in our awareness of what is going on with this planet. i've chosen to become informed regarding important issues that will significantly impact on canada such the tarriffs on our lumber, wheat, the breaching of fishery protection. but, we as canadians must not comment on these items..it might offend the usa..who tend to forget all the things canadians have done for the american ppl, including risking canadian diplomats lives during the iran crisis..yes, we smuggled out americans, we sent help to 9/11. we opened our airways to possible terrorist attacks to get americans and other travellers safely to the ground..and then took these strangers into our homes. but that is all forgotten the moment any canadian mentions they have a problem with bush's foreign policy. so lets continue publically bashing the former iraqi government or zimbawe or anyother nation but the usa..because the usa might get mad at us and create trade embargos..close the borders..meanwhile the european economic leaders are running around picking up on trade contracts in latin american and other countries who refuse to do business with the usa because of its actions regarding the invasion and occupation of iraq. now lets see if we can get back on topic and get those post 1906 canadian censuses released without any restrictions. roz On Thursday, May 29, 2003 10:33 AM, Lori Lauen [SMTP:[email protected]] wrote: > It is not a matter of defending Bush. It is not a matter of defending Bush. You have your views and I have mine but Chetien is our Prime Minister and he should not be running down countries. He is only hurting Canada as a whole. Back to the 1911 census our government is wasting time that could be better spent on something else talking about this census that should have just went through considering it is 92 yrs. Let's not run down other governments. Greetings All. Forwarded FYI. Now is the time to write our letters to MPs regarding amendments that we view as essential to make Bill S-13 representative of what genealogists and historians seek -- unrestricted access to all Census records, now and in the future, on the same basis as 240 years of Census records are already available. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. I am adopted, which is another governmental fiasco, and I have been concerned that I would be restricted from researching one of my families. I love the family I am adopted by and have been researching them for a few years, but as I learn details of my birth family it is important that I can research them, as well. I will very shortly become a grandfather, and I have directly or indirectly created two generations beyond the person that the government "protected and provided for." The importance of knowing my heritage and the medical history of my birth family is fundamentally important to three generations of individuals and won't stop there. It would be a terrible disservice to millions of Canadians, who are members of the adoption triad, if they could not have access to information on both their adopted and birth families because of bill S-13. Now, if only the offensive clause 8 could be removed. :-) Respectfully, Glenn _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ I'm too old to be told I can't know my Mother's name –Dic Charge, CANADopt Founder
This undertaking is what is the puzzle. Good Morning Juanita, Just came home for a quick change.after yet another funeral, and to check mail. Although we are very aware of the Internment of the Japanese, A black mark in our history. The Internment of the Ukrainian people [and others ]is another black mark,in our countries history. Ignore it and it will all go away? Perhaps a Cause for Concern - in releasing Census information. [or perhaps not - there may be MP's and Senators who are not aware of this]. There are so many people in Canada and elsewhere - who are not aware of this part of Canada's History. Not taught as part of Canadian History. Most do not know the history of Banff - and the use of Interned Ukrainians as the labour force in building the park. and other projects across Canada. There are few books. There is a National Film Board of Canada Film - Freedom had a Price - http://cmm.onf.ca/E/titleinfo/index.epl?id=32014 http://cmm.onf.ca/E/titleinfo/index.epl?id=33312&expr=&sid=&coll=&type= excellent - but is seldom if ever played. I had contacted the History Channel about this. Whether or not they consider showing this movie .It can sometimes be found languishing on a back shelf at some libraries. and perhaps some University Libraries.and Ukrainian Genealogy societies . Well worth the search. and Perhaps a contributing factor - in the concern about releasing Census information. Bith, I agree with you. As far as the 1911 census go I won't believe it, no matter what is said, until it is a done deal. Over the years I have found most of the information given to constituents is done just to appease for a time. Jean Chetien is very good at running his mouth off about other governments but he is horrible at running his own country. I don't believe anything that comes from him or his followers. WHY? because chretien is retiring..he doesn't have to worry about who is going to fund him in the next election. well..enough of a flame. if any one would like to continue this off list..feel free to contact me. i can refer you to tons of mainstream media reports..to the usa senate where resolutions were presented prepping for attacks on iran and syria..gulf 2 isn't over by a long shot. bush and his buds want an oil pipeline across asia. did you know the usa cut of oil supplies to korea and that's when korea fired up its nuclear reactors..yeah to get heat and electricity to north korea's ppl..imagine living in winnipeg with out heat or lights in winter. wake up..check out http://www.votetoimpeach.org roz ..with american ancestry back to 1617, descended from several rev war ancestors. millions of americans don't support bush..but if they publically voice that opinion they are labelled unpatriotic..so much for the land of the free. April I spoke to my MP (Ivan Gross - Lib) 6 years ago at his annual Canada Day event. He was spouting off about the Freedom of Information Act, that we should be able to get it, etc. To my face, very supportive. Then he went back to Ottawa. He did a 180 degree turn around. He is just another of Chretien's puppets. I can tell, becuase I just got one of his "newsletters" that keep his constituents up to date with things. It was full of why Canada should not have supported the USA and Britain in the war in Iraq. (Another thing I disagree with my government about.) With a dictator like Chretien, it hard to have anything but puppets though if the person wants to retain their seat as a liberal. Not all politicians have the fortitude of John Nunziata (hope I spelled that correctly) to walk away from party affiliation if they don't agree with what the party is doing. Bith on Oshawa, ON
