    1. [CCC] Re: Second Reading of Bill S-13
    2. As of this minute (5:15 p.m. EDT), the House is discussing Bill C-15 live on CPAC. This is a continuation of the debate from yesterday, so no idea of how long it might last. According to today's agenda, Bill S-13 should follow this. Sally

    2. The House came on live on CPAC at 2:00 p.m. EDT and is now covering the statements by members. According to the Projected Order of Business for today, Bill S-13 is due to be covered, but it's not really clear what time this might happen. It looks like it might be the second item (Introduction of Government Bills) under the DAILY ROUTINE OF BUSINESS beginning at 3:00 p.m. EDT. Sally

    3. Just to make you all aware, just because an order of the House says that it will be debated at the next sitting of the House, it does not mean that it will. Each bill is passed at each reading that way, and then the house leaders get together to decide which bill will be debated on which days. 3. Hey there everyone: I want to thank Juanita for figuring out the House of Commons procedure a little faster than I did. I double checked with Don Boudria's office, and yes indeed S-13 will be debated TODAY sometime between 3 and 5:30 Eastern time. Amendments are not usually done at this stage. I hope to find out who will be speaking on the bill sometime this morning. As soon as I find out I will let everyone know. Of course you can all watch the proceedings on CPAC. 3. Hi Juanita. While on the "Orders of the Day" for today it shows Bill S-13, so far (2:00 pm PST) it has not been discussed. With the time left for today I do not know if it will be discussed or not. Something that I have not known before is the House Committee to which S-13 would be referred. That appears to be the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology. Anyone considering making a submission to the Committee should do so now. The address is: House Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology House of Commons 180, rue Wellington Street, Room / pièce 671 OTTAWA, Ontario, K1A 0A6 Attn: Jean-François Pagé, Clerk Telephone : (613) 947-1971 Fax : (613) 943-0307 EMail : [email protected] Considering the time frame I would suggest sending an email submission followed up with a printed version send by normal snail mail. To my knowledge there is no amendment being contemplated that would limit all access to 112 years. 3. Hi Grant, Jack Layton, is not a member of the House of Commons, so he would not be able to introduce amendments. He can only watch the proceedings in the House, till such time that he runs for and gets elected as an MP. 3. Loretta. The sitting days of the House of Commons would normally finish at the end of this week. According to the online Parliamentary Calendar there could be a two week extension. If the MPs do not hear from us S-13 will most certainly be passed as currently worded. The Bill may or may not be passed before the summer recess. If it is passed, we hope that it will be with amendments. 3. Hi, The following is a copy of the letter from Jack Layton, Leader-New Democratic Party of Canada, concerning Bill S-13. Juanita MacDonald NDP Office of Jack Layton Leader of Canada's New Democratic Party May 26, 2003, Dear Ms MacDonald, Thank you for taking the time to register your views and provide me with the copies of your submissions to the Standing Senate Committee on Bill S-13, Amendments to the Statistics Act. My NDP caucus collegues and I are in full agreement with your position and in the past we have raised this issue in the House of Commons and wrote to the Minister of Industry about the changes to the census forms. We support the release of census information after 92 years, in the belief that most Canadians would accept this as a reasonable balance of the right to privacy and the collective interest in enhancing the study of history. Meanwhile I am taking the liberty of forwarding a copy of your correspondent to NDP Industry Critic, Brian Masse for his consideration. Again thank you for keeping me informed of your initiatives on this important issue. Sincerely, (signature) Jack Layton Leader - New Democratic Party of Canada cc.
