    3. Hi Judy and All To respond to a number of similar queries the following information is provided again for submitting ATI requests. The form may be downloaded from http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/gos-sog/forms/Acc-pri/350-57_e.rtf In filling out the form 'Federal Government Institution' --- 'Statistics Canada' 'Provide details regarding the information being sought'. --- My wording was "As a family historian and genealogist I have a requirement to view and obtain information regarding my ancestors from Historic Census Records. The Privacy Act of Canada, and Regulations attached thereto, provide that information from Census may be made available to any person or body, for purposes of research, 92 years after collection. This message is to be considered my Request, under the Access to Information Act, for access to schedules of the 1911 National Census of Canada. Thank you" Feel free to use your own wording. I would, however, keep the request in general terms seeking access to the 1911 schedules of Census and also avoid making a request for specific individuals. If you seek information on specific individuals you will likely be informed to submit a request for a 'Census Pensions Search' at a cost of $48.15 per individual. 'Method of access preferred' --- No need to respond to either option. We expect the request to be refused so neither response would be applicable. 'Name of applicant' and address information is self-explanatory. Mark the box indicating the request is being made by 'a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or another individual present in Canada,'. Sign and date your request. Keep a copy of it. Mail your request, including a check or money order for $5.00 made out to the 'Receiver General of Canada', to: Pamela White, ATIP Coordinator Statistics Canada R.H. Coats Bldg., 25th floor Tunney's Pasture Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0T6 For further information, check the first link on the Post 1901 Census Project website at: http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census Happy Hunting. 3. To all:- Many do not like the SUN newspapers, but at least we are able to cover many areas from one URL:- http://www.canoe.ca/NewsStand/TorontoSun/home.html The following story will cover part of more than two days' wrangling in the House of Commons about Income Tax Act and Donations to Political Parties -- Bill C-24 http://www.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Politics/2003/06/04/103434-cp.html Bill S-13 MIGHT finally see the light of day! Click on COLUMNISTS - Find the Sun Ottawa Bureau -- Greg Weston has a great article!! I was unable to find a story by Kathleen Harris about RADWANSKI being caught with his hand in the $$$$$-barrel -- it seems the cost of PRIVACY has reached an all-time high. There was a longer story Monday -- but no byline. If anyone has yesterday's Toronto Sun, Page 8 -- NEWS "TRAVEL TAB ON TRIAL" Did privacy boss mislead House? 3. Hi Freda. I would like copies of your requests, although if those submitting requests wish they can wait until their request has been refused and they have sent a complaint to the Information Commissioner. That way copies of all can be sent at the same time thus saving postage. I would like to be notified of the request whether a copy is sent at this time or not. Messages from those letting the list know about sending a request are being put into a separate folder so I can keep track of them. 3. To all -- especially Larry Bagnell, M.P.:- When I posted the list of politicians appointed to the House Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology, I made one mistake -- sincere apologies. Larry Bagnell, MP represents YUKON -- not Newfoundland. http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Score5.htm#NWT One will find that Mr. Bagnell is supportive and I am pleased he is on the committee IF Bill S-13 ever reaches Second Reading and progresses to the above-named committee. In the meantime, Access to Information forms are being mailed http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/1911ati.htm I realized my error when Mr. Bagnell gave a terrific speech re Bill C-24 -- one which every taxpayer and person should check. 3. Greetings All. I forward FYI a message sent to me today as an example of how wide spread our Census campaign is known. While this letter is from Cape Town, South Africa it is only one example of support received from virtually every 'Western' country in the world. Happy Hunting. Gordon ----- Original Message ----- From: Mitchell To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, June 10, 2003 8:20 AM Subject: Canada Census Committee Hello Gordon This is a brief genealogical letter to you all the way from Cape Town, South Africa. Please keep up your good efforts to open up Canadian Census and other on-line records. What this permits is unbelievably powerful ...... In the 19th century, 4 Irishmen with the surname of "Mitchell" studied medicine at Glasgow University in Scotland, graduating from ca. 1818 to 1898. All 4 were from the same townland, and were probably closely related -- as you know, Irish records of that period are few and incomplete. However, thanks to the power of the internet -- and the resources available through it, and the many willing helpers, librarians, archivists, etc -- descendants of 3 out of these 4 are now working together, on a story that should be called "The Doctors' Thread". These were: Dr Samuel Mitchell (1795 - 1865), the first medical doctor at Wallace, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia Dr John Mitchell (1803 -- 1877), the first medical doctor at Merigomish, Pictou County, Nova Scotia Dr James Alexander Mitchell (1876 -- 1933), South Africa's first Secretary of (Public) Health The 4th doctor was Dr William James Mitchell (ca. 1842 - 1887), later of Unionville, Toronto, who I have still to track down. There were many other doctors who studied at other universities. All in all, we have information on 20 medical doctors (all Dr Mitchell's), all family with roots in the same townland, and spreading from the North of Ireland to Scotland, England, Australia, Canada and the USA. There may also be links to the 19th century American Dr Silas Weir Mitchell, who was one of 7 doctors in 3 generations. This kind of global reunion of families and the combining of research and scholarship is possible because of efforts such as your campaign. My very best wishes and sincere thanks Adv. 3. To all who desire release of the 1911 and later census records:- To date, Bill S-13 "to amend the Privacy Act", has travelled through the Senate and has had First Reading in the House of Commons. So far, Second Reading has been announced, but work has been done on other government bills, for example, Bill C-24 today -- and possibly tomorrow. Many researchers are filling out Access To Information forms, with full details available at this site:- http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/1911ati.htm A legal action has also been posted for the 1911 census. Whenever Bill S-13 is sent to the Committee stage, Quebec has four appointees to the main committee -- plus 93 others! André Bachand [email protected] Paul Crete [email protected] Jocelyne Girard-Bujold [email protected] Hon. Gilbert Noamand [email protected] Check and see if above will ensure Bill S-13 have NO restrictions, write to them, ask for their support http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Score4.htm#PQ Genealogy societies are requested to send ATIs and letters.
