Thanks to John for forwarding the responses from the candidates he questioned. Any more out there? Happy Hunting. Gordon ----- Original Message ----- From: John Bullock To: muriel_davidson@sympatico.ca ; gordon_watts@telus.net Sent: Wednesday, June 16, 2004 6:09 PM I recently sent this to all candidates in Kingston and the Islands "I would like to ask what your position is on the release of Historic Census records after the 1906 Western census. I will be basing my vote on the response to this important question. (No reply will result in a no vote). I got back the following responses: Canadian Alliance Party (Don Rogers) "You appear to have detailed knowledge on the subject. I'm sure Ms. Fogal and M. Rodger would appreciate hearing more information on the matter. They have been copied with your letter and my response and they may choose to respond further" I then received a phone call from their headquarters, and after hearing the whole issue they are in favour of releasing the census with no strings attached. No further contact made Green Party (Janian Fisher Balfour) "Thanks for forwarding this. What an utterly strange thing - that the Chief Statistician has seen fit to not comply! Has he or she stated any case as to why they will not release the information? I cannot imagine any scenario why they should not do so, especially if doing so is in contravention of the law. And certainly 92 years is sufficient passage of time for such a thing. I can see no reason why I wouldn't support this petition." Conservatives (Blair MacLean) "Blair is most certainly in favour of this. He understands that the availability of such records can provide a crucial link or links in genealogical research of family lines and do much to allow the many genealogy researchers across the world to expand their collective body of knowledge. FYI ----- Original Message ----- From: "Potvin Jean-Sébastien" <Jean-Sebastien.Potvin@lac-bac.gc.ca> Sent: Wednesday, June 16, 2004 1:33 PM Subject: Canadian Genealogy Centre / Centre canadien de généalogie BILINGUAL MESSAGE / MESSAGE BILINGUE The Canadian Genealogy Centre triples its content ! - Don't forget to update your bookmarks - One year after putting the Canadian Genealogy Centre online, Library and Archives Canada offers a new version of the Centre in response to the needs of its users. The Centre reflects the complete integration of genealogical content from the former Web sites of the National Archives of Canada, the National Library of Canada and the Canadian Genealogy Centre. All pages have been updated and reconfigured. In the section "Sources by Topic," you will now find information on the major genealogical sources available in Canada, whether it be at Library and Archives Canada, at provincial and territorial archives, in libraries or in other institutions. For documents held at Library and Archives, numerous lists of microfilm reel numbers have been added to the references. A new subject index allows users to quickly find sources of interest. To meet the needs of genealogists who use the various databases regularly, the directory of Canadian genealogical resources, AVITUS, has been enriched. It now has 3,371 entries that describe 533 institutions and 2,838 resources (e.g., Web sites, databases, etc.). During the last few months, new online genealogical resources, developed in co-operation with our partners, have also been added: * In co-operation with the Jewish Genealogical Society of Montreal and of Ottawa: a database on Canadian naturalization, 1915-1932, provides access to lists of immigrants who received Canadian naturalization certificates. These lists were published in the Canada Gazette between 1915 and 1932. * In co-operation with members of aboriginal communities: a guide, Researching Your Aboriginal Ancestry at Library and Archives Canada, helps people doing genealogical research on their aboriginal ancestors within the archival documentation at Library and Archives Canada. * In co-operation with the British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa: a database, Soldiers of the South African War, contains references to Canadians who participated in this event. Lastly, important educational resources have been added for teachers and students. Always guided by EuGENEus, teachers can introduce their students from Grades 5 to 8 to migration movements, thanks to a complete lesson plan that includes a student handout and three new activities: The Odyssey of Our Ancestors, Pack Up and Go! and Migration Challenge! This initiative has been made possible, in part, by the Canadian Culture Online Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. Greetings All My thanks to Garth Staples for forwarding the following. I would hope that many more candidates and incumbents would be as vocal in their stand as Wayne Easter is in his newspaper article below. Unfortunately many do not appear to be as aware of the Census issue as they should be. We must be diligent in educating them and continuing to seek their active support in our quest to regain the unrestricted public access to Historic Census records that we now have for records up to 1906. Happy Hunting. Gordon ----- Original Message ----- From: Garth Staples To: Gordon A. Watts ; Muriel M. Davidson Sent: Wednesday, June 16, 2004 12:13 PM Subject: Census 1911 Wayne Easter MP, Liberal candidate for the federal riding of Malpeque called today for the immediate release by Statistics Canada of the 1911 Canadian census to Library and Archives Canada for immediate access by all Canadians. ‘The delay in releasing the 1911 census by Statistics Canada is unacceptable to me and to all Canadians who are interested in preserving our Canadian heritage”, candidate Easter stated. “ In this age when criticism is levelled at our educational institutions for not making Canadian history courses readily available to our students this attempt by Stats Can to further remove Canadians from their recorded historical roots must not be allowed to happen”, Mr Easter further stated. “My support to all those who are interested in accessing the 1911 census , as is possible for prior censuses, to research the history of their communities and their families is unequivocal and I look forward to taking the issue to the next parliament”, Mr Easter concluded. SHAWN MURPHY MP, Liberal candidate for Charlottetown said on June 14 , 2004: Quote: " I would be pleased to publicly state my support for the release of the 1911 census". Regards Garth Staples
To all:- The name GLOBAL GENEALOGY is well-known to many of us. Their store may be researched at http://www.globalgenealogy.com/ You will find there is a new address -- 43 Main Street South at Campbellville, Ontario -- further information on the site. The official opening will be Saturday, June 19, 2004 -- and to add to the opening, two members of Halton-Peel Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society will be attending to gather signatures on census petitions. Rick Roberts, of Global Genealogy, generally keeps petitions on the counter, but Saturday will be too busy so Halton-Peel Branch members are assisting. At the same time, the two members will be able to promote their own branch, possibly gain new members, have an item to give to signers of petitions. This is a suggestion that all branches of ALL genealogical and historical societies across Canada grab this opportunity to make themselves known and also provide a service for the Canada Census Campaign. I will answer any questions privately if one desires to learn more. Muriel M. The following was submitted to me some time ago and with June 28th looming too closely, hopefully all know his/her political candidates. The site covers many subjects -- except why many people are receiving voter's cards - more than one -- while some are not. Advance voting is available this Friday, Saturday and Monday. To all:- I guess I really goofed -- and apologies for my errors. December 6, 1917 was the date of the Halifax Explosion, the first part of "The Shattered City" was on CBC this evening beginning at 8 PM -- the second part will be tomorrow evening, 8 PM with time difference for Newfoundland-Labrador. To the ones who picked up on my mistake -- June 6, 1944 was the 60th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. December 7, 1941 was the bombing of Pearl Harbour with the Arizona becoming a shine and underwater cemetery for crew members. Tune in tomorrow evening to The Shattered City to learn why Boston receives a Christmas tree from Nova Scotia each year. Apologies for the errors!! Muriel M. Hello, I've been trying to follow this for a while, and have realised how lucky I am living in Denmark. In Denmark we have free access to censuses when they're 70 years old (Used to be 80), but you can get a written permission, which I have, to see censuses up to and incl. 1950. When the churchbooks are full, the copy book is send to the Regional Archive it belongs to (Zealand, Funen, Jutland and South Jutland) and you're allowed to see records which are 50 years or older (Deaths 10 years), provided they have the book (In small parishes, it takes a while to fill the books). Good luck with your battle ! Take care Martin ============= I receive the above from you way back in March -- my apologies for not replying before -- we are envious of the census release system in Denmark, believe me!! 92 years is far too long -- I would like 72 years for "tombstone" data and complete data in 92 years -- even less years would suit me very well! Feel free to forward we have NEW census petitions, in English and French, for Non-Residents, Senate and House of Commons. The pages may be double-sided to save postage. The petition MUST include Page 1 -- this has the "prayer" [do not know why it is called by that term] Page 2 has a smaller version of the prayer Please send Page 1 [ONE] for each petition and as many other pages of Page 2 as needed. The complete street address is not necessary -- just follow printed instructions - CITY, PROVINCE, POSTAL CODE Reason -- When I receive Non-Resident petitions with only Page 2, there is no way I can staple a European petition to an American one. Also, high school students may sign -- lots of data where petition downloads are available. Fill up the pages!!! Muriel M. To all:- December 6 was an important date, both in 1917 and in 1944. December 6, 1944 was D-Day in Normandy, France but the following is about the other December 6. The first part of "The Shattered City" was on CBC, started at 8:00 PM -- with time difference for Newfoundland-Labrador. Gordon Pinsent is part of the show -- the televised documentary of what happened in Halifax Harbour on December 6, 1917. The second part will be televised tomorrow evening -- same time. Readers will note I have copied in Boston-States-L@rootsweb.com and all native Nova Scotians know why the annual Christmas tree is sent to Boston before December 6th each year -- tune in and you will learn the reason. Muriel

To all:- The first Sunday in June will always be Veteran's Day and it just happened to also fall on D-Day - The Normandy campaign of June 6, 1944. There are other Canadian veterans -- including 516 who are no longer with us, the ones who took part in the Korean War. A beautiful display was in the L-Wing lobby of Sunnybrook Veteran's Wings when I visited there today. The display consisted of Canadian flags of all branches of the service which fought in Korea, flanking a large framed poster of a Canadian soldier, a boy and girl, listed as available from http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca The poster has the words Canada Remembers The Korean War Canada se souvient De la guerre de Corée Beneath the poster wa an inscribed tablet with the following:- "Canadian soldier holding a young Korean girl and guiding a Korean boy. The girl is holding a bouquet of 21 maple leaves, representing the 16 Canadians with no known graves and the five Canadian sailors lost at sea. The boy is holding a bouquet of maple leaves mixed with roses of Sharon, the national flower of Korea, as a symbol of the friendship between the two countries. The monument bears the inscription "We'll never forget you brave sons of Canada," in English, French and Korean, along with the names of the 516 Canadian soldiers who died serving in the Korean War." Thanks David. Should you have the opportunity to speak with Ovid Jackson again you might inform him that Bill S-13, rather than being 'designed to make the census readily available', was intended more to place conditions and restrictions on access to the records, and what people could do with information obtained from Census. It was obviously engineered by Chief Statistician Ivan P. Fellegi who opposes access. He is the reason we have had to campaign for the return of access for the past six years. If the true intent is to make census 'readily available' all that is required is for the government to direct the Chief Statistician to return care and control of the records to the National Arhivist in accordance with the Access to Information and Privacy Acts. Not being aware of the restrictions contained in the bill obviously indicates that he, like many other MPs, has not bothered to read it. Happy Hunting.
